Technology in the Medical Field The advancement of technology has been evolving for over decades. The use of technology in the medical field is very beneficial to the healthcare workers. In the medical field technology is being used in a number of different ways to help improve patient safety. Evolving technology has a direct effect on the medical field. Technology is used in the medical field by barcode scanning, robots, and smart infusion pumps to ensure that nurses, surgeons, and even physicians are making fewer mistakes, and to help them be more accurate when performing a procedure on a patient. There are two different types of robots that can be used in surgeries, which are passive and active. According to Gerhardus, “ A physician controls a passive robot” (245). Physicians use passive robots to help them be more precise, accurate, and safer when performing a surgery. Gerhardus states that a passive robot is mainly used to perform cardiac surgery (245). The use of robot-assisted surgery has advantages and disadvantages. Surgeons, who are willing to use robots during surgery, will improve their patient’s quality of care, and they will cause the amount of pain the patient experience to reduce, and the patient’s recovery will be much quicker (Gerhardus 245). For instance, a patient whose surgery was performed using a robotic system will recover in about a week, however; another patient who had the same surgery, but the surgeon did not use the robotic system will recover in about two weeks or sometimes even longer. Also, according to Gerhardus, “Robot-assisted surgery reduces the rate of occurrence of bacterial infections and blood transfusions” (250). According to Gerhardus the disadvantage of using robots to help perform surgery is that each medical facility will have to spend a large amount of money to make sure that the workers are educated and trained to use this type of technology, when performing a surgery (249). A report written by the National Quality Forum (NQF) found that over a decade after the IOM report the prevalence of medical errors remains very high (2010). In fact a study done by the Hearst Corporation found that the number of deaths due to medical error and post surgical infections has increased since the IOM first highlighted the problem and recommended actions to reduce the number of events (Dyess, 2009).

The Hastings centre also shares the same sentiments when they state that “Many errors can be traced to flaws in complex systems of healthcare delivery, not flaws in individual performance” (The Hastings centre 2011, 5). These revelations come amid increased blame on healthcare workers for their apparent neglect of safe healthcare practices. IOM gives an example of poor communication between healthcare providers as one of the main problems associated with systemic flaws which consequently lead to medical errors. Because of this reason, the institute claims that focusing less on individuals and more on systems is likely to reduce the prevalence of medical errors.

Thus, as technology continues to change the world as we know it, it is sweeping the medical field right along with it. I chose the Da Vinci Surgical system as my topic because I am interested into going to physical therapy or into the orthopedics field after undergrad. Surgical equipment is highly important due to the hundreds of accidents that happen and also the high percentage of diseases. As these incidents occur it is important to consider the safety of the patient when it comes to cutting into their bodies. With the invention of the Da Vinci Surgical system it helped with vision and different viewpoints of the patient’s body and also improves precision. It is important to have a machine or tool for more than one type of surgery, one to use on patients with different injuries or diseases. Overall, this surgical system helps improve and help further research how precise and how in control a surgeon can be.
