In addition, teachers are addressing the CCSS, ISTE, P21, and ICT standards by attending workshops and completing tutorials in order to become proficient and meet the standard. On the other hand, technological issues shape the way technology is used in today’s classroom. The use of technology in today’s classroom is limited and restricted due to fears of misuse. Sometimes, when a teacher incorporates technology in the classroom there is always a student that misuses it. For instance, a teacher may assign the student to research a topic but instead the student decides to play games and watch movies, thus incorporating too much technology in a classroom can also become an issue because it can easily distract students. It is no more pertinent than today to acknowledge that students live in a technology driven world where information and communication technologies are integrated into everyday situations (QSA, 2007). Prensky, 2001 suggests that it is now clear that as a result of the abundant technological environment and students’ substantial level of interaction with it, that today’s students think and process information fundamentally differently from their predecessors. With this in mind, it is crucial that as a future educator, I bring to the classroom new and innovative ways of teaching and learning in order to motivate and interest these ‘digital natives’ (Halat, 2008).
Technology is everywhere; in the home, office, restaurant and the classroom. As teachers, we need to begin to embrace this technology and apply it to our students’ lives. But this begins with the teacher’s attitude and according to Johnson,
In reality, people struggle for happiness having technology and science to help get them there. In the Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, Huxley delves into a darker possibility of utopias. This dystopian world is a satire used by Huxley to warn about the pitfalls that can lead to a totalitarian society. Huxley is not afraid to dive head first into the philosophy and ideas which question the human spirit and motivation. In this Brave New World, Huxley makes a comparison to current world events, to which he questions the use of technology and science, leading to giving up their individuality and control.
Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low use of technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten of elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful. It can cause many distractions, it can be difficult to use and can take away from learning time.
When it comes to technologies that have greatly changed and impacted society what better time to look at than the 20th century. It was a time of great leaps and ingenuity. While they may seem rudimentary by today 's standards, the helped to make advancements and life possible in the 20th century.
21st-century education is always changing, especially in the classroom. Teachers are teaching and preparing students to succeed in life and get them ready for the 21st-century skills needed to move forward in this world. Teachers have to get away from being the teacher and to becoming the facilitator who guides students and teachers, by allowing them to take ownership of their learning and teaching. Our role as teachers is to equip students with the tools needed to work together and individually to solve real world problems.
Technology forms the most vital element of life in the world today. Every aspect of our lives is dominated by technology and its importance in our lives is indispensable. In the past, technology was something that was only used in our homes and by the wealthy. However, this has become a thing of the past. Classrooms have become more interactive and lessons seem to be more engaging. Students have been given the opportunity to use Smart Boards, document cameras, projectors, and wireless slates. In order for our students to feel comfortable, when using the different technologies, they must have some amount of background knowledge. If a student is not given this background knowledge, they will have more difficulty utilizing the technology than someone who has the background knowledge. Teachers in classrooms today must also have some type of knowledge of the technology being used. A great way to build this knowledge is to attend training sessions that your district may be holding, and utilize the technology as much as possible.
Technology enables students and teachers to have a fast and easy way to acquire unlimited access to tons of information. With all of the useful technologies, the curriculum is bound to change in endless ways, creating more opportunity for learning.
Furthermore, adult learners in the 21st century are changing. They want it all. “Adults are beginning to demand that their learning take place at a time, place, and pace convenient to them.”17 There are multiple ways to accommodate adult learners; the 21st century educator must strive to engage students through multiple methods of delivery, with technology leading the way. Technology itself can be an obstacle to overcome. Many educators of today were not taught using technology; however, digital media is foundational to the learners of today and must be integrated into curriculum.
The use of computers in school classrooms has evolved throughout the years, and has become revolutionary in changing the way we teach and learn. Our classrooms should no longer be confined to four walls and a few teachers who are considered to be experts in knowledge. Our classrooms need to keep up with a changing society and a new world that is dependent on technology. As students graduate, they need the technological skills needed to thrive in a world in which technology sets the pace. Society expects the school system to produce functional citizens who have the skills to gain profitable employment, and not be a drain on the system.
Vision Statement: My vision is to ensure that every student gains the acceptable knowledge to understand and learn the concepts of what education has to offer. Within this context I perceive integrating technology as a tool that will expand learning abilities. Therefore, my vision is to provide instructional technology skills into the curriculum. As a follower of the 21st Century Framework I will set into the standards of education the 21st Century themes, the mastery of core subjects, learning and innovation skills, information media and technology skills along with life and career skills to ensure that every student masters these skills. Stimulating an academic environment that is dedicated to support and enhance student’s commitment to today’s digital world will promote success.
