Stages of Team Development for Project Teams Did you know that there are five stages of team development? Many people are unaware that there are stages that project teams must go through to successfully complete a project. Bruce Wayne Tuckman developed and published the first four stages of team growth in 1965. It wasn’t until 1977 that Tuckman, along with Mary Ann Jensen added a fifth stage. The first stage of team development is forming. Stage two is storming. The third stage is norming. Stage four is performing. Finally, the last stage of team development is adjourning. Stage two is the “storming” stage. Gina Abudi explains in her article that “in this stage, the team members compete with each other for status and acceptance of their ideas (Abudi, 2010).” During this stage, team members will develop different opinions on what/ how things should be done. With the guidance of the team leader, conflict should be resolved as the team learns how to solve problems together. The fourth stage is called the performing stage. In the “permoring” stage, teams start functioning at a higher performance level. By this stage, team members know and trust each other enough to rely on each other’s guidance. Team members are much more efficient at solving problems quickly. PM hut explains that “when they disagree, the team members can work through it and come to consensus without interrupting the project’s progress. Groups make exertion to complete the project, but not necessarily the project is achieved every time. Within a group, every member participates in a position to accomplish the group’s intentions. These positions add new and significant dimensions to physics of group colleagues. Bruce Tuckman’s team development theory provides a way to challenge the duties of assembling a squad through the achievement of an assignment. This section will summarize Tuckman´s contribution to the field of team development given his recognized validity and generalized applicability. A brief background review of his work will be followed by the extension of his theory, in 1977, by himself and Jensen, that added a fifth stage to the model. Finally, the implications of the theory will be briefly summarized as well as a starting point to the presentation of a unique team development model.
The first stage of team building is called the forming stage. The team meets for the first time and learns about the opportunities and challenges, and then they agree on goals and begin to tackle tasks. Team members tend to behave quite independently. They may be motivated, but are usually relatively uninformed of the issues and objectives of the team (Wikipedia). The group has reached the Norming stage when they begin the second stage.
Norming- The norming stage is where everything begins to get clear because the leader takes responsibility and everyone else accept their roles and position in the team. Agreement forms among the team members. Team may engage in more discussions and other activities. Leader ship is also shared by other team members at times. Respect is shown to the leader.

Seven tasks must be included in consideration of team dynamics and structure. The first of which is defining the goal, mission or function of a specific team. The team must know what it is being asked to accomplish. The second area of consideration is assessing what skills, abilities, knowledge or potential to acquire such would be needed amongst selected team members. Identification of potential team members should include an assessment of the skills, knowledge and abilities or the potential to acquire such so that ultimately the team has the building blocks with which to succeed in its mission, goal or function. This assessment must include an understanding of realistic potential contributions by potential team members with the included assessment of whether or not the acquisition of skills and knowledge can be made available through research and analysis.
When first being introduced to a group, it can be quite stressful trying to figure out how you and your team members are going to function together. As with any group, there are a few milestones that need to be reached in order to ensure a functional and successful relationship.
