The eventual removal of troops in the Vietnam War is considered the pivotal movement, stabilizing a troubled America after a series of increasingly antagonizing social and political movements in conflict. The history that led to this point is often referred to as the tumultuous sixties because from the beginning of the Korean War stark social and political divisions were the cause of social unrest and, I contend, a considerable breakdown of the quality of life in urban cities. For the first time in American history, civil disobedience was highly publicized and capable of influencing the actions of ordinary citizens. Through the civil rights movement, the feminist movement, the anti-war movement, and the emergence of the counterculture, people living amongst one another with different perspectives caused riots, violence and the deterioration of daily life.
The ultimate result of the civil movements of the 1960’s carried well into the 1970’s and had a quite a noticeable impact on America’s urban centers. Nowhere else was the emergence of anarchy more evident than in New York City. According to Vincent Cannato in, The Ungovernable City: John Lindsay and His Struggle to Save New York, “Between 1966 and 1973, New York’s murder rate climbed 137 percent… car thefts was [up] 84 percent, robberies—209 percent, assault—64%, rapes—112%. ” Besides the large emergence of violent crime, the culture of New York City, Cannato argues, changed into one of public fear. Cannato, through the words of New York Times reporter David Burnham, asserts that citizens were too scared to go about their daily lives and developed habitual paranoid precautions. ... create a realistic representation of what life in NYC was like. As a result, Taxi Driver more realistically conveyed the condition of the city and the accompanying sense of helplessness. According to Scorsese, this was accomplished both visually and through the actions of Travis. Scorsese asserts that considerable visual influence from Taxi Driver derived from, “[my] impressions I have as a result of growing up in New York and living in the city.” As for the vigilante actions of Travis, Scorsese argues that as a result of Travis’s experience in Vietnam and the overall sense which accompanies living in a big city, “society is in a state of decay; the police force are not doing their job in allowing prostitution on the streets… that sense of frustration goes in swings of the pendulum.” Travis was coerced into reacting regardless of his inability to produce change.
The author is also a political historian, and has written many articles for magazines across the country. He was a history major from the University of Chicago, and later on, Pearlstein went and received his PhD at the University of Michigan for American culture. The book is broken up into four books into one, describing the events that happened in America during the 1960’s and 70’s. Going into detail describing disparity with the war, discrimination and how peoples’ opinions were taken into consideration. First we are introduced to the 1965 riot, which happened nine months after Lyndon Johnsons’ triumph over Barry Goldwater.
The Vietnam War, which lasted for two decades (1955-1975), was probably the most problematic of all American wars. US involvement in Vietnam occurred within the larger context of the Cold War between the US and the USSR. It was, and remains, morally ambiguous and controversial. The Vietnam War was slated as both a war against Communism and a war aimed at suppressing dangerous nationalist self-determination. Christian G. Appy's book, Working-Class War: American Combat Soldiers and Vietnam, is a graphic and perceptive portrayal of soldiers' experiences and the lasting effects the Vietnam War has had on the American culture and people. Working-Class War: American Combat Soldiers and Vietnam, is an analytical work that has three major purposes: 1. to show that those who fought in Vietnam were predominantly from the working class 2. to convey the experiences of the soldiers who served in Vietnam and 3. to offer his own scathing commentary of American actions in Vietnam.
During the 1960’s, there was a rising tide of protests that were taking place. College students began to stand up for their rights and protest for a stronger voice in society. The United States was going through a tough period marked by the Cold War against communism and also the war in Vietnam. From Truman to Nixon the United States government involved the country more and more in Vietnam. Nixon announced a new policy in 1968 called Vietnamization. (Foner, 4th edition, pg.1028) This policy would bring American troops back home, but it neither limited the war nor ended the antiwar movements.
The 1960’s was a time society fantasized of a better world. However, the horrors of the Vietnam War soon became evident; the mass amounts of death occurring because of the war became a reality. It created a “movement”, especially in American colleges, in order to stand up for what they believed to be “right”. The Vietnam war was in full force, and students across the country were in an outrage. Society needed an excuse to rebel against the boring and safe way of life they were used to; Vietnam gave them the excuse they needed. Teenagers from different universities came together and formed various organizations that protested the Vietnam war for many reasons. These reasons included protesting weapons and different tactics used in the war, and the reason the U.S. entered the war in the first place. These get-togethers had such a monumental impact on their way of life that it was famously named the Anti-War Movement. When the Vietnam War ended, The United States did not have a real concrete reason why; there were a bunch of theories about why the war ended. Through negative media attention and rebellious youth culture, the Anti-War Movement made a monumental impact in the ending of the Vietnam War.

Certainly the most turbulent twelve months of the post-WWII period and arguably one of the most disturbing episodes the country has endured since the Civil War, 1968 offers the world a glimpse into the tumultuous workings of a revolution. Although the entire epoch of the 1960's remains significant in US history, 1968 stands alone as the pivotal year of the decade; it was the moment when all of the nation's urges toward violence, sublimity, diversity, and disorder peaked to produce a transformation great enough to blanket an entire society. While some may superficially disagree, the evidence found in the Tet Offensive, race relations, and the counterculture's music of the period undeniably affirm 1968 as a turning point in American history.

Amsterdam’s story takes place in Five Points District of New York, a filthy and dangerous part of the city before it was deleted form history. As a young boy Vallan witnessed his father’s murder at the hand of William Cutting or Bill the Butcher (Day-Lewis) during one of their many gang wars. As Amsterdam’s story progresses along side The Butcher they become inseparable, but Amsterdam had ulterior motive. Ultimately, Amsterdam attempts to betray his new found ally in order to avenge his father’s death. Historical accounts of events are almost always synthesized by the storyteller; in the case Gangs of New York Martin Scorsese tells of Five Points, The Dead Rabbits Riots, and The Draft Riots, but is his fictional story accurate through history?
Aside from its acting, the other major influence which Mean Streets had upon American film-makers was through it's use of a rock n' roll soundtrack (almost perfectly integrated with the images), and in its depiction of a new kind of screen violence. Unexpected, volatile, explosive and wholly senseless, yet, for all that, undeniably cinematic violence. The way in which Scorsese blends these two - the rock and roll and the violence - shows that he understood instinctively, better than anyone else until then, that cinema (or at least this kind of cinema, the kinetic, visceral kind) and rock n' roll are both expressions of revolutionary instincts, and that they are as inherently destructive as they are creative. This simple device - brutal outbreaks of violence combined with an upbeat soundtrack - has been taken up by both the mainstream cinema at large and by many individual `auteurs', all of whom are in Scorsese's debt - Stone and Tarantino coming at once to mind.
The director Antoine Fuqua vision for this film was to bring that intense love-hate relationship onto the big screen and showcase it for the world to see. To ensure a convincing film setting, Fuqua shot on location in some of the most hardcore neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Fuqua also wanted to show the daily struggles of officers tasked to work in the rougher neighborhoods of cities and how easy it can be to get caught up in a street life filled with killers and drug dealers. Although the sixties were a decade in which the United States became a more open, more tolerant, and a freer country, in some ways it became less of these things. During the sixties, America intervened in other nations and efforts were made to stop the progress of the civil rights movement. Because of America’s foreign policy and Americans fight against the civil rights movement, it is clear that the sixties in America were not purely a decade of openness, tolerance, and freedom in the United States.

Ironically, he survives the order, despite attempting to commit suicide, and is lauded as the “taxi driver hero”.
