The taste of the Elote is amazing. When I bite into the corn, I can clearly taste the juice of the corn with the crunchiness of the charred surface. The taste of cold sour cream and mayonnaise comes afterwards. The spiciness of the chili comes at last, however I think it is not as spicy as I expected. I consider it a mild Mexican cuisine comparing it to their more spicy cuisines. The texture is mostly feels like eating normal corn except there are more liquid due to the butter, sour cream, mayonnaise and cheese on top. The color is really interesting; it is a yellow corn with white top from the mayonnaise and cheese with the red guajillo chili powder on top. It almost looks like graffiti on corn. While working on article, for Rolling Stone Magazine, about immigrant workers in a strawberry field he acquired his inspiration for the aforementioned book, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal, a work examining the country’s fast food industry (Gale).
Should others be able to control what we eat? Should they tell us what to eat or what not to eat, or should we be responsible for our own eating habits? In Wendell Berry’s essay, “The Pleasures of Eating”, he argues that people should eat responsibly and to eat responsible is to live free. According to Berry, one way to eat responsible is to live free. He explains how people are not free if our food and sources are controlled by someone else. I disagree with Berry’s argument, because it is up to people to decide whether they want to eat responsibly and live free. Many people do not care where their food comes from and others do not have time to learn about their food and its origin.
When most people hear the word “Mexican”, a person instantly thinks of food. This is because Mexicans have been known through out America as a culture to have a variety of some of the best dishes. Hispanics males take pride in working, just as the females take pride in cooking. The women don’t do it just for the heck of it, they make a form of art and also competition. Every Mexican family has a person who competes with another, to see who can make the best dish. Mexicans have different dishes from soups to rice. The one soup you will here in the Mexican generation is pozole. This is a soup that consists of pork, hominy, and spicy herbs. This recipe has been in my family for a more then a decade, and now I share it with you. In order to cook this soup and make as good as Mexicans do, you must possess a certain passion for cooking. In “The Pleasures of Eating” (1990), Berry argues that people have become detached and unknowledgeable by taking food for granted, and should eat responsibly by preparing their own food, learning its origins, and shopping locally. Berry first claims that people in today’s society have become disconnected with what they consume. He says that people have a lack of knowledge that stems from wanting food to be effortless and efficient. He also states that the industrial food industry is somewhat behind this change, and wants to continue to streamline eating until it’s zero effort. An oppressed soul finds means to escape through the preparation of food in the novel, Like Water for Chocolate (1992). Written by Laura Esquivel, the story is set in revolutionary Mexico at the turn of the century. Tita, the young heroine, is living on her family’s ranch with her two older sisters, her overbearing mother, and Nacha, the family cook and Tita’s surrogate mother. At a very young age, Tita is instilled with a deep love for food "for Tita, the joy of living was wrapped up in the delights of food" (7). The sudden death of Tita's father, left Tita's mother's unable to nurse the infant Tita due to shock and grief. Therefore Nacha, "who [knows] everything about cooking" (6) offers to assume the responsibility of feeding and caring for the young Tita. "From that day on, Tita's domain was the kitchen" (7). Throughout the novel, food is used as a constant metaphor for the intense feelings and emotions Tita is forced to conceal.

Poetry is a part of literature that writers used to inform, educate, warn, or entertain the society. Although the field has developed over the years, the authenticity of poetry remains in its ability to produce a meaning using metaphors and allusions. In most cases, poems are a puzzle that the reader has to solve by applying rhetoric analysis to extract the meaning. Accordingly, poems are interesting pieces that activate the mind and explore the reader’s critical and analytical skills. In the poem “There are Delicacies,” Earle Birney utilizes a figurative language to express the theme and perfect the poem. Specifically, the poem addresses the frangibility of the human life by equating it to the flimsy of a watch. Precisely, the poet argues that a human life is short, and, therefore, everyone should complete his duties in perfection because once he or she dies, the chance is unavailable forever.
Time is another big struggle for college students. I know the feeling of applying for classes because it’s tough to decide on if there’s time to get from one class to one another; also if there’s time to get a bite to eat. Wendell Berry’s “The Pleasures of Eating: In What Are People For?” article suggests taking pleasure in eating a few ways to help anyone be a healthier eater, but “time” is an obstacle for the solutions. First off, both Berry and actually Pollan suggest students grow their own food in gardens. Specifically, Berry says to “Participate in food production to the extent” and “You will be fully responsible for any food that you grow for yourself, and you will know all about it. You will appreciate it fully, having known it all
Firstly, one aspect that is both Mexican and American is the cuisine. The original food for Mexico is very spicy and most of the time very colorful as well. Mexicans use spices, peppers, tomatoes, and cheese in many of the native dishes. They use an assortment of meat: pork, beef, lamb, and chicken. When Mexican restaurants spring up in the United States the food is toned down to appeal to Americans. The Mexican Americans use less spices to make the dishes milder rather than the hot, spicy native food. The food, still Mexican, takes on the likeness of American food. This is shown in the United States by all of the Mexican American restaurants such as Taco Bell. Therefore Mexicans have Americanized their food. “For Hispanics live on this side of the border, where Kraft manufactures Mexican-style Velveeta, and where Jack in the Box serves Fajita Pita.” (Rodriguez 131). Americans complement the Mexican style and the inverse.
In Wendell Berry’s “The Pleasures of Eating,” this farmer tells eaters how their separation from food production has turned them into “passive consumers” who know nothing about the food they eat, or their part in the agricultural process (3). They are blindsided by a food industry that does not help them understand. Berry argues that the average consumer buys available food without any questions. He states consumers that think they are distanced from agriculture because they can easily buy food, making them ignorant of cruel conditions it went through to get on the shelf. Humans have become controlled by the food industry, and regard eating as just something required for their survival. Berry wants this to change as people realize they should get an enjoyment from eating that can only come from becoming responsible for their food choices and learning more about what they eat. While describing the average consumer’s ignorance and the food industry’s deceit, he effectively uses appeals to emotion, logic, and values to persuade people to take charge, and change how they think about eating.
Mexican food is influenced by the ancient civilization. For examples the Mayans ate corn tortilla with a bean paste that covered the tortilla. The Aztec found out that mixing and squishing different types of vegetables makes a savory appetizer they call salsa. They also learned how to make what are now called tamales. When the Spaniards came they brought over milk, rice and other products that were new to Mexico. But have now remained in the cuisine.

This article talks about “eating responsibly” and “eating agriculturally”. If you haven’t heard of these terms, they vary in Berry’s article. So “Eating responsibly” and “Eating agriculturally” basically means that everyone is expected to see and know about what they are eating. Nonetheless, not all fruits and vegetables are healthy. You might need to spend some time to take a look at the brand, price, and the facts about the products. Imagine, if Berry came to your dinner table? How do you get or purchase your food? The combination of the cultures according to them came naturally and was a way of making each other comfortable with the exposure of their two cultures. They cooked a whole meal to show me their own unique way of mixing both cultures. Take for example Ana baked Corn Bread but she added sugar and cinnamon, according to her the original corn bread recipe does not include sugar. I asked her if this was her way of including her Mexican heritage because we love sweet bread or just anything sweet.
Mexican food has a long history, it is believed to come from the mayan Indians. They were mostly hunters and gatherers and corn tortillas with bean paste was a common food item and they also ate wild game, topic fruits and fish. Barbacoa is usually a Mexican barbeque which is very different from that used today. It is basically steaming and smoking the meat. It adds a lot of texture, aroma and moisture to the meat. This method includes a cauldron filled with hot water placed on a coal bottom. A grill is placed on the top of it on which the meat piece is placed wrapped in maguey leaves.
