Target’s data mining is so advanced and precise that they have been able to predict when a woman is pregnant before they know they are pregnant (Hill, 2012). Target collects information about everything that their customers have purchased not only from their stores, but from other sources too (Hill, 2012). This information is then stored and linked to a “Guest ID number” which is linked “…to their credit card, name, or email address…” (Hill, 2012). Target compiled this information along with information from their data bases about women that have created baby registries in the past and found patterns in this data (Hill, 2012). They were then able to analyze their customers to see if their purchasing habits were similar to those of pregnant women, which they were (Hill, 2012). Therefore, they are able to send out coupons to women for products such as scent-free soap, supplements such as calcium, hand sanitizers, etc. (Hill, 2012). Target’s predictions are so accurate, that they are able to predict a pregnant woman’s due date within a small margin as a result of their data mining abilities (Hill, 2012). This allows them to send the pregnant woman specialized coupons for items that she might need during different stages of her pregnancy (Hill, …show more content…
Companies must first gather information about the demand for their products and services, which is achieved through the use of research and customer surveys, etc. Once a company knows what their customers want they then use that information to plan out how to fulfill that need and create the product(s) in demand. This leads to companies gathering information about things such as materials needed, manufacturers that are able to make the products, costs of production and distribution, and how to deliver this to their customers. Afterwards, decisions are made about who is going to manufacture their product and the cost that are associated with it, the company must then share information about the product they are looking to create with the manufacturer. This information might contain size, weight, style, color, and many other requirements necessary for the manufacturer to produce the correct product. The manufacturer must share their information about the production of the product, such as the timeline for completion and the current status of the manufacturing process with the company. The company then uses this information to coordinate with the shipping carrier that they selected to use to distribute their product. The information that the company shares with the shipping carrier is that of date(s)
Target has 1,799 stores, and its annual revenue was more than $71 billion in 2014. Considering that Target operates only in the United States, the company’s total income does not seem too low. Like Walmart, Target is open to all customers without membership, and its products are similar to Walmart’s products. For example, both companies sell household essentials, pharmaceuticals, personal care items, cleaning and paper products, apparel, accessories, sporting goods, electronics, and food items, along with furniture and other products. Instead of offering membership discounts, Target offers REDcard debit and credit cards, which provide consumers with a 5% discount on purchases. Since Target utilizes e-commerce for sales of its goods, delivering products worldwide can be highly beneficial for the company’s

The year 2013 was not one marked for pride for the retail chain, Target. They had one of the largest data breaches known to date that occurred between November 27th and December 15th. Not only was this the one of the largest attacks known to date of this kind, it was also quite eye opening to many who may not have paid any attention to the world of information security. The Target hack resulted in 40 million compromised credit and debit card accounts and that was just the initial known result. After some time, the research revealed that a total of as many as 110 million Target customers were the victims of this gigantic hack. Although computer crimes occur within the United States often, the bigger problem is that criminals from other countries across the oceans are attacking as well.
Duhigg evokes that “Target began building a vast data warehouse that assigned every shopper an identification code-known internally as the ‘Guest ID number’-that kept tabs of how each person shopped” (187). Every time one goes shopping, they share intimate details about their consumption patterns with retailers. Many of those retailers are studying those details to figure out what consumers like, what they need, and which coupons are most likely to make them happy. Sports Authority provides this “Guest ID” method by offering their consumers to join free rewards program called “The League”. They encourage them to create this membership and give them benefits such as coupons and update them on the newest discounts. Also, the rewards program is based off a point system and when one has earned a certain amount of points they send them a gift card to spend however they wish. Though, what the consumers don’t know is that by applying for their free rewards program is that their collecting data and constructing analysis to make them into loyal

Customer order and decoupling point are what sets the inventory position in the production and tell them how they operate.
This is the activity carried out by organizations that own production sites, and their performance has a major impact on product cost, quality, speed of delivery and delivery reliability, and flexibility [8]. As it is quite an important part of the supply chain, production needs to be measured and continuously improved. Suitable metrics for the production level are as follows. Order lead-time, the total order cycle time, called order to delivery cycle time, refers to the time elapsed in between the receipt of customer order until the delivery of finished goods to the customer. The reduction in order cycle time leads to reduction in supply chain response time, and as such is an important performance measure and source of competitive advantage [9]. It directly interacts with customer service in determining competitiveness. Range of product and services: According to [8] a plant that manufactures a broad product range is likely to introduce new products more slowly than plants with a narrow product range. Plants that can manufacture a wide range of products are likely to perform less well in the areas of value added per employee, speed and delivery reliability. This clearly suggests that product range affects supply chain performance. Effectiveness of scheduling techniques is another important measure of supply chain effectiveness. Scheduling refers to the time or date on or by which
Generally, data mining can be associated with classes and concepts. data mining (sometimes called data or knowledge discovery) is the process of analyzing data from different perspectives and summarizing it into useful information - information that can be used to increase revenue, cuts costs, or both. Data mining software is the best analytical tools for analyzing data. It allows users to analyze data from many different dimensions or angles, categorize it, and summarize the relationships identified. Technically, data mining is the process of finding correlations or patterns among the dozen fields in large relational databases.
