In Daoism, living in harmony with the Dao (The Way), which is the ultimate cosmic order of the universe, and finding balance in all aspects of life are essential principles. Daoism was founded by Laozi who lived in 6th century BCE. He wrote his wisdom down in what is known as the Tao Te Ching: The Classic Book of Integrity and the Way which has been translated into English by Victor H. Mair. The Tao Te Ching talks a lot about “integrity” and “nonaction.” These two words are not always found together, but they work closely with each other. The Chinese term te, or de, can be translated as “integrity” according to Mair or as “power” according to Mary P. Fisher, author of Living Religions. This relates with wuwei because it is the spontaneous action that comes forth from te. The person who takes the path of wuwei will be acting out of their true self and will go with the flow of life, not working against the Tao. As long as they are in harmony with the Tao they will find peace and contentment in practicing wuwei. Fisher uses an example of a current of water and flowing with it as opposed to fighting against it (p. 113). An example of te and wuwei can be found in the Tao Te Ching in Chapter 1. It says, “The person of superior integrity does not insist upon his integrity; for this reason, he has integrity…The person of superior integrity takes no action, nor has he a purpose for acting” (p. 3). I believe this passage is saying that a person who is living in harmony with the Tao will have integrity and does not need to prove themself. Because in striving to prove their integrity they are not accepting that they may not have integrity. In “insisting” they are not living out the principle of wuwei. Also, Chapter 26, which gives some practical advice on living, talks about nonaction, or wuwei, as well as integrity. In this chapter, te has more to do with morality, but the two
