Taming of the shrew is a play closely related with social class, gender, role playing, and transformation. Each of the different characters in the play clearly embodies the themes and can be categorized as either dynamic or static. Kate, also known as “the shrew”, is a unique character that portrays the themes through her own distinctive perspective. In William Shakespeare “Taming of the Shrew”, Kate is categorized as a dynamic character through her transformation of being an obedient wife for Petruchio, her acknowledgement of other people’s ideas and love, and her better treatment of other people. Kate, the eldest daughter of Baptista Minola, has transformed throughout the story from being a “shrew” to an obedient wife for Petuchio. In the beginning, Kate is well-known by the society for many of her violent actions and cursing words towards other people. According to Gremio, “she’s too rough for me” (Act 1 Scene 1, 55) while for Grumio: “Katherine the shrew! That’s the worst possible nickname for a woman” (Act 1 Scene 2, 121). Finding a husband for Kate proves to be a tough job and even Gremio quoted: “A husband! You mean a devil” (Act 1 Scene 1, 119). Despite all these facts, a brave man from Verona named Petruchio wanted to marry her and feels challenged to tame her wild behaviors. At the first sight, Kate instantly mocks at him as quoted: “Well spoken- and just like an idiot” (Act 2 Scene 1, 206). Kate not only argues with bitter words, but also hits Petruchio due to her aggressive nature. In addition, Kate even threatens him with words like: “I’ll harass you if I stay. Let me go” (Act 2 Scene 1, 243). Despite all the fighting between Petruchio and Kate, Baptista still agrees that her daughter shall marry Petruchio as soon a... ... middle of paper ... ...a woman that is well-respected and treats people with great respect. In conclusion, Kate is a dynamic character who changes dramatically throughout the play. She transformed into an obedient wife for Petruchio, willing to acknowledge people ideas and love, and treats other people with great respect. At first, men, women, and children trembled whenever she came around, including her father and sister. By the end of the play, however, she is presented as being mild and submissive to Petruchio. Even though many critics would argue that her actions are just for pleasing Petruchio, I believe that her actions are truly genuine. Kate is just ahead of her time. Many people in that time period believed that women should just be quiet and obedient. However, in the current period, men always wanted women who are independent and willing to be able to express their emotions.
