The Revenge of History
History is a very powerful influence to your future. History can repeat itself, pressure the choices that will be made in the future, and it also can be learned from. Charles Dickens, a social critic and English author, expressed his opinions on different topics through theme and character in his writing. In “A Tale of Two Cities,” Dickens reveals the divergence between Paris and London, two peaceful cities in France tearing themselves apart during the French Revolution. This book displays an insight on what life was like during this time frame. Dickens conveys his message through his characters and hardships they have to go through during a spark of a revolution and their everyday lives. He uses Madame Defarge’s past tragedies, her role in storming the Bastille, and her death, to support his idea that the forces of history often shape people’s lives and determine their destinies. …show more content…

Madame Defarge’s history contributed to the reason she was a cold blooded killer. At the wine shop with The Vengeance, Monsieur Defarge, and Jacques Three, Madame Defarge recalls the events of her wretched childhood:
The peasant family harmed so badly by the two Evremonde brothers... is my family. Defarge, that sister of the wounded boy who died on the ground was my sister. That husband who was killed was my sister’s husband. That unborn child she carried was their child. That brother was my brother. That father was my father. Those dead people are my dead. The responsibility to bring the guilty to justice belongs to me!
