Tai Chi is a form of Martial arts also called “ moving meditation. It is based off of three major components: deep breathing, meditation and movement. The purpose of this practice is to improve overall health as well as specific ailments. To achieve the goal of the exercise it appears to be very slow moving movements with breathing techniques to relax the mind, body and soul but can be used for so much more.
According to a Chinese legend, Tai Chi was created by a Taoist monk who was inspired as he watched a crane and a snake do battle. He saw that in the battle the “snake's ability to subtly and swiftly avoid the bird's thrusts, he devised a series of self-defense techniques that do not involve meeting the opponent's force with force, but rather stress evading the blow; causing the opponent's own momentum to work against him”. This helped create over 37 movements that are used in classes that are offered by masters of Tai Chi.

If it is done properly and regularly it can help increase flexibility, balance, and coordination. The non stop flowing movements help the body deal with stress and help decrease blood pressure levels which can contribute to many conditions. This is such a unique form of exercise because older people can do it that have chronic conditions such as digestive disorders, arthritis, fibromyalgia and anxiety.
It can also help elderly people with balance to help prevent falling and injuries. Tai chi is a low impact aerobic exercise that any generation can do. In China, about 50% of participants are over the age of 50 who perform this regularly. It has been said that Tai Chi does not appeal to young generations because they are not looking to lower blood pressure or low impact exercises. About 250 million people world wide practice Tai Chi regularly but compared to yoga which has 20.4 million people in the Unites States
The philosophy of Tae Kwon Do is to build a more peaceful world. To accomplish this goal Tae Kwon Do begins with the foundation, the individual. The Art strives to develop the character, personality, and positive moral and ethical traits in each practitioner. It is upon this "foundation" of individuals possessing positive attitudes and characteristics that the "end goal" may be achieved.
Fatigue, decreased mobility and impaired balance from the rheumatoid and osteoarthritis pain also increases the risk of falls (Stanmore et al., 2013). Age related changes such as sarcopenia causes muscle tone and strength to decrease, especially in the lower limbs and as a result, balance and gait become impaired (Culross, 2008). These factors significantly influence the risk of falls and also affect the ability to carry out daily activities therefore, with a physiotherapists assistance, the nurse could introduce a personalised exercise regime to enhance muscle tone and strength (Culross, 2008). According to Neuberger et al (1997), exercise lessens fatigue and improves muscle tone and balance in older people. Recommending an exercise programme for Mrs Jones that incorporates strength training exercises and aerobics, could potentially improve muscle tone and strength and as a result improve mobility, balance and lessen the risk of falls (Bird, Pittaway, Cuisick, Rattray & Ahuja, 2013). The style of Kung Fu that I study originated in Northern China, in the Shaolin Monastery. It’s been passed down from teacher to student for a long time, and its true origins and history are shrouded in some mystery. I’ve found that the influence of the Shaolin Monastery’s surroundings is of little significance when it comes to both geography and the surrounding plants and animals. I found that customs are passed down from generation to generation, and that multiple philosophies contributed to the development of Northern Shaolin Kung Fu.

Cupping is a practice, where a cup made of glass, metal, silicone, or bamboo is placed on the skin as a suction device to pull the superficial muscle layer upwards to increase the blood flow, which helps in relieving pain, stiff muscles, and fatigue. Suction is achieved as a result of the vacuum created by the application of heat inside the cup or by a mechanical pump. Many cups are placed simultaneously and left on the skin for about 5 to15 minutes. Some therapists may also use herbal oils to glide the cups around. Cupping works similar to Acupuncture, targeting painful body parts by application of pressure.
To a person not conversant with this art, Jujitsu may be considered as a foul or derogatory term in Japanese. However, Jujitsu us one of the most effective and deadly forms of martial arts taught today. Unique among other forms of combat, Jujitsu holds the position of a “parent art”, of from which other forms of martial arts such as Aikido, Judo and several Karate styles were extracted. Jujitsu is a combination of all levels of combat. It incorporates chokes, striking, grappling, nerve and pressure point attacks, joint locks, redirection of momentum and throws.
It’s a low impact exercise. Rarely will you come across a weight bearing exercise that is gently on the joints. Most of the weight bearing exercises such as running will put too much pressure on the cartilage and joints unlike yoga.

The recommended cure for stagnant blood is exercise and or decoctions like Si Wu Tang. The main differences between Qi Gong and Tai Chi are the approaches that each take to training. Qi Gong primarily consists of meditation and gentle body movements aimed towards cultivation of the chi and health. Tai Chi is a martial art that uses meditation and gentle body movements, but also incorporates self defense techniques to stop an attacker using their own energy against them. Both are fine ways to help prevent stagnant blood and to cultivate your chi, the only difference is the martial application of the two. TCM recommends these two forms of exercise over others, because it is very easy on your joints. Older people who may practice Qi Gong or Tai Chi will not be limited or restricted because of bad knees or arthritis (Cohen 258-267).
Exercise programs for elderly women and men should include not only weight-bearing endurance and resistance activities aimed at preserving bone mass, but also activities designed to improve balance and prevent falls.

Figure skating helps older adults to strengthen their lower leg muscles which includes hip adductors and abductors, calves and ankles. Figure skating helps older adults to improve their balance and helps maintain proper alignment of the upper body (McKay, 2014). “Many older adults are donning skates, spandex and sequins and going after golds of their own” (McKay, 2014). Older adults are very careful with their jumps and spins in figure skating and which are easy for them to do at their age compared to young adults. Older adults can fracture their bones or disturb their muscles easily when they jump or spin while skating. Figure skating is a great sport, it helps older adults to clear their mind and it is a good way to get exercise while they are enjoying their skating with a partner (McKay, 2014). Figure skating gives opportunities to older adults to meet with new partners, and they sometimes get involved in a relationship especially who are single, divorced or widowed. Figure skating is not easy for older adults as they can injure themselves if they fell on ice, so the older adults who like figure skating or participate in figure skating sport they spend their money to get training for figure skating. There are many older adults who are passionate about figure skating and they skate like young adults. Aikido is a martial art that uses joints to as an advantage for self defense. Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba. Aikido was based on past martial arts. There were other influences on Aikido besides martial arts. The reason i decided to take this class is so I can learn to defend myself with a very interesting martial art.
Adding exercises into one’s daily routines can change their whole lifestyle. Many people look at exercise as being something just for people who want to lose weight or to become muscle bound, but there are a great deal of benefits that can be received from exercising regularly. Of course gaining muscle and losing fat are the two most popular reasons that usually attract people to the gym, but they make up a small part of the potential benefits that can be achieved with exercise. There are several ways in which I have benefited in my life from exercising regularly, besides just making me bigger and stronger. It has made me become more organized, helped me make better decisions, and motivated me to take on new challenges in life.
