The organization that will discussed is the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). TDCJ manages the state's prison system, parole, and state jail systems. This agency is the largest state agency in Texas and they provide training, funding and community supervision. The mission statement of the TDCJ is to provide public safety promote positive change in offender behavior reintegrate offender into society and assist victims of crime.
By reading the mission statement, it is believed that the TDCJ has goal clarity. The TDCJ has a variety of divisions in which they use the hierarchy system. To have a better understanding I view their organizational chart. The TDCJ has several different organizational charts and at top of the chart it always starts with the Texas Board of Criminal Justice, Executive Director, Deputy director, Parole Division Director, then it branches of into Regional director, parole supervisor, then parole officer.
Each of the job titles have different roles within the organization and different management styles but the mission statement does not change for each department. This is when the ambiguity goal is apparent. The TDCJ goal is to help the offenders become functioning citizens in society.
Because each department plays a role in achieving that goal the department goal should be different. Example the

The Government performance Project (GPP) approach should be used with upper management. Because they can set long and short-term goals how the division should function and Program delivery, performance, measurements and the results are used for better management. Also, all the departments are working together to achieve their goal. Lance has been actively coordinating political action for prison reform since 2007. He is President of the AFSCME, a union for correctional employees throughout the state of Texas. The AFSCME has national representation with 1.6 million members; Lance represents about 5000 Texas correctional workers, about one-eighth of Texas’s total correctional staff, which includes non-correctional employees like parole, victim services, etc. There are roughly 26,000 Correctional Officers in Texas, but whether the state is staffed to that capacity is open to debate. There are typically officer shortages, give or take 3000 at any given time. Today, Texas faces the most severe shortages of correctional staff they have seen. I asked Lance why he thought the Texas Prisons were in such storage for Correctional ...
Managing case assignments allows for the offender to have the best opportunities for reintegration into the community as well as for the criminal justice system to successfully supervise the offender. There exist 4 different case assignment models that are used most frequently to provide the offender with his or her most basic needs and services.
Once chief Robin Richardson was in command she made the decision to change the organizational structure within the police department. MPD chief Richardson made the decision the change the police department 's centralized organization structure to a more decentralized structure that relies on employees to communicate information to make decisions and recommend changes” ( Textbook, Chapter 10). MPD chief Richardson decisions to change the “organizational structure was to accommodate the dramatic shift in performance culture”( Textbook Chapter). MPD chief Richardson felt that the traditional functional organization structure under the vertical hierarchy has lost sight of MPD organization mission. Chief Richardson wanted to create an organizational structure that provides certain levels of autonomy, that allows employees to make decisions based on their individuals discretions. MPD chief Robin Richardson considered a “divisional organization a design structure that groups processes and jobs based on clearly defined market segments or geography”( Textbook Chapter 10). Chief Richardson considered “divisional organization structure that allows decision making to take place at the divisional level by managers, and differences of opinion would be resolved without depending on the chief. Chief Richardson felt that this design was leaning more toward what she visualized for the MPD: a centralized, horizontal organization” (Textbook chapter 10). According to the text, chief Robin Richardson “finally decision was to create a matrix organization, a design structure that facilitates horizontal integration and collaboration. A matrix model combines elements of both the functional and the divisional organizations, has dual lines of authority, and is designed to encourage the sharing of information. Robin felt that by using this model, the reporting line would shift
As a newly promoted Lieutenant in charge of jail operations in the Houston Police Department (HPD), there are several critical issues regarding the jail environment that require immediate attention such as, inadequate conditions of confinement, health care, security measures, and sexual misconduct between correctional officers and inmates. The aforementioned issues are a controversial topic all across the U.S. and it usually attracts media attention and creates negative publicity towards the Department of Corrections. A lieutenant of jail operations is responsible for his or he shift and oversees multiple areas of the jail facility. Responsibilities of a jail lieutenant includes but is not limited to the following: (1) coordinate shift activities;
An article discussing the importance of a mission statement states that a mission statements’ job is to outline the organization’s unique purpose and establish the basis of its values and traits, as well as describe the attitude that is to be expected of those a part of the organization. Furthermore, this philosophical foundation sets the “tone” for physical actions, meaning that the content of the mission statement can determine the behavior of personnel (Hitt & Ireland, 1992).
...ecommendations to reach this goal are to establish accreditations for law enforcement, increase the data collection, and continue to diversify the workplace, and reform court procedures and sentencing guidelines.

Future approaches that can be helpful depending once again on the facility could be more surveillance monitoring in the facility, train more officers in those facilities to learn and be able to identify critical incidents, implement programs to train officers in crisis intervention. Another approach would be to implement programs to help inmates separate themselves from their gang lifestyle by completely removing them from that facility and separating inmates who are sick or mentally unable to care for themselves any longer to avoid being singled out and ultimate becoming a victim sometime during their incarceration. Not all approaches may help for several reasons such as population growth or limitations on the funding for such

All in all, the ideas surrounding the criminal justice system were affirmed by the field practice experience. Many open doors have resulted from the venture into the field of probation. As an advocate and future employee of the criminal justice system the skills and intellect gained from the college of criminal justice at SHSU along with the internship opportunity with the Dallas County Adult Probation Department will serve as a path to a successful career. The talented individuals and extraordinary situations encountered on the journey will not be forgotten.
The Criminal Justice Administration’s primary goal is to protect, deter and serve the community. It is the goal of Law Enforcement to protect and enforce laws equally among the land (Department of Justice, 2013). The 6th
67. Doing justice, controlling crime, and preventing crime are the three goals of Criminal Justice. Doing justice is the basis for the rules, procedures, and institutions of the criminal justice system. Criminal justice agencies, supported by the public, are responsible for successfully doing justice. The criminal justice system is designed to control crime by arresting, prosecuting, convicting, and punishing those people who disobey the law. The goal of crime control is rigorously being pursued by police officers, patrol cars, lawyers who speak for a judge, and probation officers who visit clients.
The mission of the Department of Correctional Services is to serve and protect the public by providing control, humane care, and program opportunities for those individuals placed in its custody and supervision, thereby facilitating their return to society as responsible persons (“Nebraska” par 1).
This model of corrections main purpose was to reintroducing the offenders in to the community. This Program was invented to help offenders in the transition from jail to the community, aid in the processes of finding jobs and stay connected to their families and the community. The needs of these individuals are difficult: the frequency of substance abuse, mental illness, unemployment, and homelessness is elevated among the jail population.
