In "Langston Hughes and the "Other" Whitman", George Hutchinson summarizes the similarities between Langston Hughes and Walt Whitman. Although Walt Whitman wrote during the American Antebellum Era and Hughes wrote during the Harlem Renaissance, both used their works to advocate for African Americans. Hughes greatly admired Whitman and felt that he had been ignored and underappreciated as a writer. Hughes’ admiration and respect for Whitman allowed him to develop his own unique style of writing and encouraged him to be a voice for those living in Harlem. Analyzing Whitman’s poetry enabled Hughes to find ways to incorporate aspects of Jazz and Blues into his poetry. Whitman and Hughes both integrated their opinions into their poetry and used
This does not make up for the lack of other poetic elements, and the simplicity of the writing. The differences between the two pieces is still very vass. The two pieces have two totally different objectives, which makes them have different writing styles. Claire Dederer writes “Song lyrics do a fine imitation of poetry, but they’re not quite the same thing. Lyrics are a vessel, designed to hold a singer’s voice.
The similarities are prolific in their presence in certain parts of the novel, the very context of both stories shows similarities, both are dealing with an oppressed factor that is set free by an outsider who teaches and challenges the system in which the oppressed are caught.
The two poems are two extreme sides of the Negro mentality. They do not leave opportunity for other Blacks to move. They are both required complete conformity. The short story was about Blacks weighting their options. It shows that Blacks can think logically about their action.
To begin, these two poems discuss racism in the United States of America towards African Americans. Both poems were written during two completely different eras. One being from 1926 while the other dates from 2014. These two poems have been written almost 100 years apart, yet this subject is still as relevant today as it was in 1926. When Langston Hughes wrote “I, Too,” in 1926, I don’t think that he would’ve ever expected that a century
One similarity is that there is a similarity in allusion. Heaven in “Mr. Rager” is known to be this glorious place to journey to. Scott states in his lyrics, “I’m on my way to heaven (wherever you are, now).” (Cudi line 6). Heaven is hard to find, it is this glorious place in the book “The Bible”. Just about the same in the poem “Dreams” except the man is dreaming about heaven, “‘Twere folly still to hope for higher heaven.”(Poe line 12). Heaven is always going to be the highest place to look up too, especially in the sky. Both poem and song lyrics have a big similarity in allusion. There is no winner on which is better but both have spoken what heaven is
On the surface, "life" is a late 19th century poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar. The poem illustrates the amount of comfort and somber there is in life. Unfortunately, according to Paul Laurence Dunbar, there is more soberness in life than the joyous moments in our existence. In more detail, Paul Laurence Dunbar demonstrates how without companionship our existence is a series of joys and sorrows in the poem, "Life" through concrete and abstract diction.
Hard work is always a good ethic to have, even if you may be going through a lot in life. The two poems I chose were “The Village Blacksmith” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and “A Black Man Talks of Reaping” by Arna Bontemps. “The Village Blacksmith” is a poem about is about a hard working blacksmith in a village has a tough life and is going through hard things in life this poem shows examples of honesty, persistence and hard work. “A Black Man Talks of Reaping” is a poem of a black sharecropper going through many hardships like working so hard and getting so little, as many African Americans did in the southern region of the United States in the early 1800s this poem also depicts a clear representation of hardships and persevering through them. There are many comparisons within these two poems, but the one that sticks out the most is theme, imagery and rhyme scheme. These two poems stick out because they were written around the same period of time and they show many similarities and few differences.
The poetry by these two poets creates several different images, both overall, each with a different goal, have achieved their purposes. Though from slightly different times, they can both be recognized and appreciated as poets who did not fear the outside, and were willing to put themselves out there to create both truth and beauty.
“Living in the moment” by Jason Mraz is the jester trying to get others to see that the worry free life is the way to go.
The poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost and the song “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw both have similarities in how they developed their themes. The poem by Robert Frost used rhyme and symbolism in his poem. Robert used rhyme in his poem,he used know, though, here, snow, queer, etc and the pattern was a,a,b,a,b,b,c,b,c,c,d,c,d,d,d,d and he used symbolism by using the words sleep, snow, woods to symbolise his feelings. The song by Tim McGraw used repetition and a simile in his song. Tim had repetition, he was repeating a part of the song again towards the end. He also had a simile it was a moment came that stopped me on a dime.
Both poems where written in the Anglo-Saxton era in Old English and later translated into English. As well as both poems being written in the same time period, they are both elegiac poems, meaning they are poignant and mournful.
Even though these two poets are from the same time frame, they each had diversified influences. Some of Whitman’s influences include Sir Walter Scott, t...
When considering the structure of the poems, they are similar in that they are both written loosely in iambic pentameter. Also, they both have a notable structured rhyme scheme.
The poems written by Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman have numerous differences, For example, the Dickinson’s poems are simple and short while Whitman’s poems are complex and long.
