Synthesis of Technology Over the past thirty years, technology has integrated into our society in a way that has made it almost impossible to avoid it (Chayko, 2). Whether it be through phone calls, webcam conversations, or even social media, people have become more connected through the means of it. However, this is a dangerous thing for we are now more susceptible to distraction (Shirky). Throughout the assigned articles, three main topics were discussed that enforce the aforementioned statements: how technology is integral to our society, social media, and the distraction of modern technologies. There is no denying that technology is a fundamental piece of our modern society. The internet is such an essential piece of our society that Chayko insists on referring to it with a little i because it has become “such an integral part of so many lives that it seems no longer necessary to consider it a Special Thing That Deserves Capitalization” (Chayko, 2). We use the internet to share knowledge, receive knowledge, and even communicate with people. However pleasant this seems, it may have had a hand in creating the many societal problems we see today. In the articles by May, Mueller & Oppenheimer, and Shirky, laptop use in the classroom is discussed. The common “more is better” mentality fails in the note taking department. Those who take notes on a laptop tend to have more notes, but the quality of such is much lesser in comparison to the alternative long-handed way (May). When students took notes on a laptop, they wrote verbatim which has been found to decrease information retention (Mueller and Oppenheimer).
