School days can be very long depending on your situation. Maybe you’re hungry, didn’t get enough sleep, or dislike your classes. All of those can lead to you feeling like the day keeps dragging on. I know for me I always feel like that on Mondays and Wednesdays. Source B, the high school bell schedule, reveals that these students have a 7 hour school day, and 8 periods. Windham High also has a 7 hour school day, but only 7 periods, which makes our classes longer. Although it’s nice to have only 7 classes, and some being things such as art or a music cla, it does get tedious sitting in one class, in one desk for so long. In my 8th grade year, classes wee a whole 90 minutes. That is far too long to be sitting in a class and expect children not …show more content…
As Gato stated in Source A, “Is this deadly routine really necessary?” Our schedule is always being switched around to try to suit us better, but it doesn’t change that we will still have 7 periods a day for 5 days a week. In my opinion, if we were to have a break from our classes at some point in the middle of the day, even as a study hall, we may do better as students. Source G is a student handbook. In it, it says “students are expected to report to class on time and attend all classes regularly.” Yes, I agree with this statement, but sometimes it’s hard to rush all the way upstairs from places like the gym in only a couple of minutes because a group of freshmen want to stand in a doorway gossiping. I just think the school day should be fit for the students a bit more by including a couple minute longer passing times and a break at some point in the day. Now that that has been said, I think schools really should support individuality. Going back to the long school day, it seems like the school is pushing conformity on us by assuming all children can handle the same things. By stating my ideas on how to better the school, I was stating my reasons on how the school should support
Extended class periods and block scheduling will improve student’s grades and can diminish their stress level significantly. A normal day in block scheduling consists of only four classes a day, alternating each day. These classes would last 120 minutes each, with the same 5 minute passing periods in between classes. This scheduling gives teachers more time to explain their lesson. It also gives students time to recover from the late nights due to sports and other activities because they only have four classes a day. Their homework for these classes isn’t due for another day, so they don’t have to stress over getting it done. 120 minute classes combined with blocked scheduling increases the amount of time teachers have for instruction and will overall increase the student’s knowledge, in turn, raising their grades.
On average, high school students receive about 3.5 hours of homework each night and elementary school students are getting about three times the amount that is recommended, which is ten minutes per grade, so 10 minutes for 1st grade and 50 minutes for 5th grade. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school student would be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste. This leaves students with less than the recommended 9 hours of sleep. Students that have to stay up that late for homework will be tired in the morning, even if their schools do start later.
Throughout the United States, students tend to complain about how early school starts in the morning. A few schools in the U.S. are beginning to move their start times later in the morning. However, not everyone is on the same side of these decisions. Some say that later school start times will have benefits on student performance and student health. Others say that later school start times would have negative affects on what time school will end and the schedules of the community. What times schools start is a very controversial topic.
Relaxation could improve a students ability to think and therefore enhance their chance of excelling at their academics. According to an Indiana school,"Having one weekday off of school each week allows more flexibility for teachers and students." Students have an extra day to make sure that they do all their studies and still get extra time to do extra curricular activities. This also prevents homework and studying excuses students might make as a result of lack of time and abundant amount of homework. A five day week of school gives students a hard time as they have to adjust both activities and studies in 2 days. As a result of a five day school week students get less time to spend with their families, but with a four day school week they could spend more with family and still have everything finished and be prepared. Concluding from these chain of events, an implementation of a four day school week will result in a students academic growth.
Would you consider going to a school where you learn year-round? Maybe this would be your ideal school, but, when would you get to have some time to go to summer camp, or get a summer job, or play a sport with games during the day? Schools with the traditional schedule may actually be a better choice, and not just because kids love summer break. Schools should have a traditional school year schedule instead of a year round schedule because there isn’t a significant difference between the students’ performance, and year round schedules make planning family vacations hard, make the teachers’ job more difficult, and are more expensive. Also, having a summer break allows kids to participate in activities that they would not be able to do on a year round schedule due to the shorter breaks.
What do you think about going to school year round with little breaks here and there, but not your traditional three month summer break? Year round schooling has been a decision argued with the government, teachers, principals and parents. Many kids and adults like to relax on their three month break. Many students are used to having two week winter break, one week spring break, and three months of summer break. Overall, one three month break would benefit than having three-week breaks broken up throughout the school year.
Routine is an important part of people’s lives. School is a place where almost everyone routinely went to, which on average, consisted of going for about nine months and a three month break. The room forms of schedules that occur in year round schools are 45-15, 60-20, and 90-30 plans. The first number is how many days the students go to school before they acquire their official break which is the second number. The reason we have our school schedules set up the way they are now is because of the agrarian times when families needed help in the spring and summer with the farming of their crops. Ever since then, America
Taking such a long break from class can lead to students losing their train of thought. If we lose our train of thought, we will be totally out of it during our next class. This also leads to students wanting to cut. What if someone didn 't feel like staying the three hours and gets exhausted and just leaves? Even if we went the three hours, we would be exhausted and most likely fall asleep in class. I know the counter argument would be why doesn 't the student do some homework or try to understand the lesson he just had during his break. But in reality, which student uses their break for school work? Its called a break for a reason. In high school, we weren’t given breaks. All we had was a half hour to an hour of lunch to relieve ourselves. But it wasn 't too much time to let us lose our train of thought. Due to that, I don 't think our class should be so widely separated. This all leads back to the fact that our professors should take attendance, and make sure their students don 't fall asleep in
“We used to judge a man by the shake of his hand.” a quote by Gretchen Wilson. Dating back a few years to the 1990’s, shop-class programs and trade schools weren’t sought out as a first choice, and was often looked down upon. People in these programs were viewed as having “no other options.” People may feel that going to a trade school means there was no other option for the student; however, it can be argued that a trade school member can make close to the same amount as a university graduate, not come out of school with much debt, and be equally as happy.
A lot of kids today have many things going on from sports to school, plus after school activities, the only time students can sit back and relax is during summer vacation. How amazing does it sound to catch up on your sleep and spend time with family and friends for 3 months? Summer vacation allows for students and teachers to just relax or sleep, and to go on vacations or just spend some quality time with family and friends. But on the other hand, the all year round school has a higher expense.
Should Children Have to go to School All Year? Having school all year was an idea school boards were thinking of doing. Therefore, having school all year would help cause problems. Also, having school year round is what some schools want to do.
There are many opinions and studies about reforming school days. Some people are concerned that longer school days would bring more difficulties. However, there are numerous studies and practical examples that prove that we improve students’ performance by lengthening school days. Finally, the economy and our society will benefit from expanding school days.
They should be able to have enough time in the afternoon to distract themselves with other healthy activities which ensure the development of new skills and is also relaxing. Many students’ everyday activities may also be affected. Students who like to read or do their homework in the library or just spend time in any other public place will be affected since they will have less time in them because of later release times. According to Rachel Pancare, who holds a Master of Science in childhood education, "An earlier release offers many children a chance to relax or take a break before beginning their homework assignments." With the new schedule, students will be too centralized on school which can lead to stress. It is important to combat or relieve stress since it can lead to a huge variety of other problems or disorders like unhealthy eating habits, sleep deprivation, and depression, which end up affecting academics. However, these health concerns are just as likely to be present if the school schedule starts early in the
Most children attend school for about 6.5 hours per day. Some people argue that this is not enough time for children to master key concepts, while others say that children spend too much time in school and on homework, which leaves them little time for family or fun activities. “There are many benefits to year-round schooling—including consistency, less time spent relearning material, and the implications that year-round schooling has for closing the achievement gap” (Lynch, 2016, par. 1). The adage of the adage. Currently, more than 700 schools have extended their day.
One extra day of school cuts into precious relaxation time of students and teachers alike.
