In the short film ‘Runaway’ produced by Ringling College the use of symbols, relationships and focus all lead to the creation of a drama within the film. The relationship between the characters in this film is and antagonist in opposition to protagonist relationship and one of best friends. The relationship in this film makes it dramatic because of the misunderstanding and confusion between the characters. The use of this relationship between the characters is to make the film dramatic and interesting for the viewer. Due to the target audience for this being young children the lack of speaking accounts for the younger audience. But when throws it away, the man catches it and gives it back to Chillie and shows that it has restored faith and trust in their friendship. Another element of drama in ‘Runaway’ is camera focus. The focus on where the camera is and the objects the camera focuses on. We are given the perspective from the fridge Chillie for most of the film, where it has a pessimistic view of the man and his actions in regard to fixing the fridges problem. The fridge losses its handle fifteen seconds into the film, thus showing us that the fridge is old and probably in need of replacing. The camera then focuses on a book with the page turned to a brand new fridge, making the viewer assume that the fridge is being replaced and making the man the antagonist and helping persuade the viewer to be on the side of Chillie. However, at the end of the movie the focus on the book is changed to see the other side, where the man has bought parts to help fix Chillie, rather than replacing it. This adds an element of drama because it essentially creates the antagonist against protagonist relationship which instantly produces
