“Maybe it's only us. Maybe there is a beast. maybe it's only us” this quote is written by the author William Golding. It perfectly sums up his theme that everyone has defects and given the right circumstances they will be revealed. In William Golding’s novel “Lord of the Flies” a group of boys trying to escape a war crash land on an island with no adults The author's ideology is that when given the chance everyone has defects and can be evil. One way he shows this idea is through the use of symbols. There are many symbols that play an important role in explaining Golding’s thematic, but two symbols that are prominent are the beast and the conch shell. When Ralph first blows the conch and everyone comes it is used as a symbol of civilization “we can use this to call the others”. Have a meeting, they'll come when they hear us”(Golding 16) This is the start of the boys society, a desire for normal in the unnormal, that's how boys find comfort. As the story progressesThe conch's power starts to fade and the society falls apart, the end of the society could be marked when Piggy is killed and the conch is broken “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist.”(golding 180) This was the end point of the boy's humanity and the final push into evil and insanity; the conch was broken thus symbolizing the end of their civilization. This connects to Golding's theme of the story because he believes all people have defects and thus when given the chance will turn to savagery.
