Ursula Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” is a short story that captures racism directly towards blacks in America. In the story, the people of Omelas are celebrating the summer festival which song and dance. They decorated the streets; children are running around playing while the whole city attends. The people of Omelas don’t have a care in the world. They don’t use weapons, aren’t reckless people, but they aren’t simple people. They seem to be living in a utopia, a place where everything is perfect, granted by some type of devil or person. For a utopia to come true there has to be a sacrifice or arrangement. Le Guin uses this history to create a story that symbolizes the troubles slaves went through to make others happy. She says:
It has one locked door, and no window. A little light seeps in dustily between cracks in the boards, secondhand from a cobwebbed window somewhere across the cellar. In one corner of the little room a couple of mops, with stiff, clotted, foul-smelling heads, stand near a rusty bucket. The floor is dirt, a little damp to the touch, as cellar dirt usually is. The room is about three paces long and two wide: a mere broom closet or disused tool room. In the room a child is sitting (Guin).
This is significant because she is describing the poor living conditions of the child. The child is portraying the living conditions of slaves because slaves slept in small farms, kitchens, and even in small cabins with hundreds of other slaves. They were very malnourished and had to get permission from the master to even eat fruit. Le Guin puts the slaves and the child in the same category to portray the selfishness of man and to show how people will stop at nothing to achieve a utopian
Children are an important focus in both stories. Jackson makes it easy. for us to imagine their "boisterous play"(para 2), and Le Guin writes "their" high calls rising like swallows crossing flights over the music and the singing"(para 1). I see these children being used to symbolize perceived states. of happiness in both stories.
Initially, Elisabeth is the matriarch of the four generations of women talked about in the story. Elisabeth works in the house, but she’s married to a field slave and has three daughters. Not much insight is given on Elisabeth and her feelings, yet through the narration it is as if she lived vicariously through her youngest daughter, Suzette: “It was as if her mother were the one who had just had her first communion not Suzette” (20) Even though Elisabeth too worked in the house, Suzette had more privileges than her mother and the other slaves. Elisabeth represented the strength and the pride of her people: “You have a mother and a father both, and they don’t live up to the [plantation] house” (25). She would constantly remind Suzette of her real family, which signifies the remembrance of a history of people and their roots. It is up to Suzette to keep the heritage even through the latter miscegenation of the generations to come.

Without a doubt, conditions that the slaves lived under could be easily described as intolerable and inhumane. As painful as the slave's treatment by the masters was, it proved to be more unbearable for the women who were enslaved. Why did the women suffer a grimmer fate as slaves? The answer lies in the readings, Harriet Jacob's Incidents in the life of a Slave Girl and Olaudah Equiano's Interesting Narrative which both imply that sexual abuse, jealous mistresses', and loss of children caused the female slaves to endure a more dreadful and hard life in captivity.
Celia, a Slave was a factual interpretation of one isolated incident that depicted common slave fear during the antebellum period of the United States. Melton A. McLaurin, the author, used this account of a young slave woman's struggle through the undeserved hardships of rape and injustice to explain to today's naive society a better depiction of what slavery could have been like. The story of Celia illustrates the root of racial problems Americans still face in their society. Although not nearly as extreme, they continue to live in a white-male dominated culture that looks down upon African-Americans, especially females. McLaurin looks at the views of the time, and speculates the probabilities of this pre - Civil War era, the values of which still pierce daily life in the United States.
In her story Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Harriet Jacobs presents what life was like living as a female slave during the 19th century. Born into slavery, she exhibits, to people living in the North who thought slaves were treated fairly and well, how living as a slave, especially as a female slave during that time, was a heinous and horrible experience. Perhaps even harder than it was if one had been a male slave, as female slaves had to deal with issues, such as unwanted sexual attention, sexual victimization and for some the suffering of being separated from their children. I will begin with a comparison of the two books, “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave” and “Harriett Ann Jacobs, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” with their title pages. Douglass’s title is announcing that his entire “life” as an “American Slave” will be examined. While, Jacobs’s title offers a contrast and proclaims that this will not be the story of her full life, but a selection of “incidents” that occurred at specific times in her life. In the utopian city of Omelas, there is a small room underneath one of the buildings were a small unwanted child sits and is mistreated and slandered for existing. The child’s terrible existence allows the city to flourish and thrive with grace and beauty. Visitors come to view the miserable juvenile and say nothing, while others physically abuse the innocent child. The Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas is a short story written by Ursula Le Guin. In her story, Le Guin creates a model Utilitarian society in which the majority of its citizens are devoid of suffering; allowing them to become an expressive, artistic population. Le Guin’s unrelenting pursuit of making the reader imagine a rich, happy and festival abundant society mushrooms and ultimately climaxes with the introduction of the outlet for all of Omelas’ avoided misfortune. Le Guin then introduces a coming of age ritual in which innocent adolescents of the city are made aware of the byproduct of their happiness. She advances with a scenario where most of these adolescents are extremely burdened at first but later devise a rationalization for the “wretched one’s” situation. Le Guin has imagined a possible contemporary Utilitarian society with the goal to maximize the welfare of the greatest number of people. On the contrary, Kant would argue that using the child as a mere means is wrong and argue that the living conditions of the child are not universalizable. The citizens of Omelas must face this moral dilemma for all of their lives or instead choose to silently escape the city altogether.

Loosing the happiness that one gets in exchange from injustice in the world is an action that is unthinkable to humankind. The right ethical decision has to be made to entirely resolve the issue, but making that right ethical decision is impossible with the other factors of life such as personal happiness. In “The One Who Walks Away From Omelas” the reader is taught the importance of making the right ethical decision and can relate these morals in their own community. One cannot just choose to ignore, one cannot just choose to observe and still do nothing, and one cannot just simply walk away. The reader is taught the momentous moral of not being a bystander, the importance of moral responsibility, and the great significance in learning to overcome the ethical issues in society.
The short story by Ursula Le Guin is set in what, at first, appears to be a utopian society. This later turns out to be untrue as the only way for the citizens of Omelas must live with the fact that they essentially torture and abuse a young child to keep this perfect way of life. For those who cannot take the harsh reality of this utopia, they leave Omelas and go somewhere even more unimaginable, nobody knows where they go but the citizens of Omelas seem to. There are many parallels between Omelas and America, both when this story was written in the 1970’s and modern day. One such parallel is the way in which we treat the lowest and most vulnerable in our societies.

In order to maintain the “perfect” environment, a single child has to be egregiously abused and kept in a state of absolute dejected misery. Residents of omelas, at the proper age, are informed of the of the child. They are able to visit the child but not allowed to feed nor rescue it. Instead they are presented with the choice to continue to profit off their misery and enjoy costly happiness or walk away into the real world and risk their own “suffering”. The issue of oppression presented by LeGuin in Those Who Walk Away From Omelas can connect to the situation that most sweat shop workers face today.

The people of Omelas have happy, successful lives only because in the basement of an inconspicuous house, a young child lives in daily despair. The people of Omelas have a selfish disposition that as long as they continue to be happy, whatever happens to the child does not matter. This is a similar concept to today’s society involving natural resources and the Earth itself. In this story Le Guin shows the true, unladen selfishness and apathy of people concerning their own welfare and the dehumanization of someone for personal gain.
