Katherine Anne Porter wrote “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” to showcase how one woman responds to loss with strong faith. The reader is introduced to a feisty eighty year old woman named Granny Weatherall. Granny Weatherall is near death and while laying in her bed she starts to reminisce about past events in her life which include her being jilted by George, her fiancé. The narrator describes the scene when she feels the weight of George jilting her and how she all most collapsed “there was the freshly polished floor with the green rug on it” (Porter 81). Green symbolizes inexperience. Granny has never felt pain like this until this day and becomes unsure on how to deal with it. Granny never faces her memories so she has inexperience with coping with them. The narrator explains her feelings more about being jilted “she put on the white veil and set out the white cake…” (Porter 79). White symbolizes innocence. Granny first wedding day represents the last time she had her innocence. The unfortunate circumstance that Granny faces turn her to into a feisty old women and this new attitude becomes a way for Granny to feel better about the past. The narrator remembers a time about John “John’s eyes very black when they should have been blue” (Porter 81). Black symbolizes death. John’s death brings back memory of hardship in Granny’s life and her not fully understanding why bad events keep happening in her life. The narrator says “I am not sick” (Porter 77). Granny becomes angry as the doctor examines her because she thinks she is healthy when in actuality she on her death bed. The dreadful memories that Granny has been harboring in her mind for so long are contributing to her current mental state of scattered thoughts. The attitude Granny shows toward the doctor is hostile because of all the loss in her life. Granny keeps her faith although, but in her dying moment she asks for a sign from God. Granny kept her life in order but never has true devoutness towards God because of the guilt she felt and her incapability to forgive George. Ellen Weatherall from "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall" suffers from a state of demension throughout the story. Her thoughts and memories grow tangled and confused with age, causing her to live in the dark. ""Here's Doctor Harry." "I won't see that boy again. He just left five minutes ago." Emily experienced a high status life, but that high status brought her down. Both women were religious, especially in their final moments. Granny Weatherall called upon God to give her a sign before she died, but was left jilted, again. The grandmother from “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, had a conversation with her killer, The Misfit, about Jesus before he killed her. She also called out several times for Jesus before she was killed, and instructed the Misfit to pray. Death was an element that was present in both women’s stories. In “The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall”, her family and friends are essentially playing a waiting game for her death. Granny Weatherall at first does not believe that she is dying, but towards the end of the story, she accepts her fate, and turns to God. Throughout “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, there are constant foreshadows to the families death, such as the family passing a hearse, the family passing a graveyard, and the family driving through a town called “Toomsboro”. With these two divergent personas that define the grandmother, I believe the ultimate success of this story relies greatly upon specific devices that O’Connor incorporates throughout the story; both irony and foreshadowing ultimately lead to a tale that results in an ironic twist of fate and also play heavily on the character development of the grandmother. In “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” by Katherine Anne Porter, we learn of an elderly woman who is lying on her death bed watching her life pass before her eyes. We learn, from these flashbacks, how much she has overcome and endured, and how she's put her whole heart into being a mother and wife up until her last breath, when she blew out the candle and rode with her Father in a cart to heaven. It’s this very reason why Porter, in my opinion, chose Granny as the narrator of this story; so we could see the story through her eyes, being able to relate and appreciate it better.
Similarly, in The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall, Porter discusses the regrets of an old woman revealed by her reactions to her being left at the altar and her slow death sixty years later.

Janie's outlook on life stems from the system of beliefs that her grandmother, Nanny instills in her during life. These beliefs include how women should act in a society and in a marriage. Nanny and her daughter, Janie's mother, were both raped and left with bastard children, this experience is the catalyst for Nanny’s desire to see Janie be married of to a well-to-do gentleman. She desires to see Janie married off to a well to do gentleman because she wants to see that Janie is well cared for throughout her life.
Janie's Grandmother is the first bud on her tree. She raised Janie since she was a little girl. Her grandmother is in some respects a gardener pruning and shaping the future for her granddaughter. She tries to instill a strong belief in marriage. To her marriage is the only way that Janie will survive in life. What Nanny does not realize is that Janie has the potential to make her own path in the walk of life. This blinds nanny, because she is a victim of the horrible effects of slavery. She really tries to convey to Janie that she has her own voice but she forces her into a position where that voice is silenced and there for condemning all hopes of her Granddaughter become the woman that she is capable of being.
The flashback commences by recounting the years leading to Janie’s childhood through alluding to Nanny and Janie’s mother Leafy’s, life difficulties. Nanny is raised in slavery and was raped by her slave master, which led to Leafy’s birth. She had to flee in the night and hide in swamps during the war to protect her daughter. They go to live with a white family; the Washburn’s who are very accommodating. Once Leafy is older, she is raped by her white schoolteacher, leading to Janie’s birth. Leafy is absent through Janie’s life, so Nanny becomes her caregiver. Due to the abandonment of her parents, Janie is uncertain about her character and is lacking parental influence. Nanny raises Janie vicariously, so she will not encounter the same obstacles. Under a pear tree one day, Janie observes a bee pollinating a flower. She determines that this is how love is supposed to look. Love is passionate and never selfish or demanding. One day she kisses a boy named Johnny Taylor, whom Nanny does not approve. Nanny’s beliefs and authority on Janie’s life cause Janie’s abrupt marriage, before she can discover her true identity and spirit.
Although this story is told in the third person, the reader’s eyes are strictly controlled by the meddling, ever-involved grandmother. She is never given a name; she is just a generic grandmother; she could belong to anyone. O’Connor portrays her as simply annoying, a thorn in her son’s side. As the little girl June Star rudely puts it, “She has to go everywhere we go. She wouldn’t stay at home to be queen for a day” (117-118). As June Star demonstrates, the family treats the grandmother with great reproach. Even as she is driving them all crazy with her constant comments and old-fashioned attitude, the reader is made to feel sorry for her. It is this constant stream of confliction that keeps the story boiling, and eventually overflows into the shocking conclusion. Of course the grandmother meant no harm, but who can help but to blame her? O’Connor puts her readers into a fit of rage as “the horrible thought” comes to the grandmother, “that the house she had remembered so vividly was not in Georgia but in Tennessee” (125).
It is never mentioned what his grandmother is suffering from but I’ve made the assumption that it’s something along the lines of Alzheimer’s- she doesn’t remember anything and has slowly withered away.
In "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall," there are two themes. The first is self-pity. The second theme is the acceptance of her death. Both deal with the way people perceive their deaths and mortality in general. Granny Weatherall's behavior is Porter's tool for making these themes visible to the reader. The theme of self-pity is obvious and thoroughly explored early on. As a young lady, Granny Weatherall was left at the altar on her wedding day. As a result, the pathetic woman feels sorry for herself for the rest of her life. She becomes a bitter old woman who is suspicious of everyone around her. In fact, the reader can rationalize that it is just Cornelia's concern for an ailing mother that creates the situation of her seemingly being there all the time.
The first word is almanac. “…the old grandmother sits in the kitchen with the child…reading jokes from the almanac, laughing and talking to hide her tears” (923). It was a distraction to what it actually symbolized; passing time. The almanac tells her, “I know what I know” (924). The power of the almanac is suggested here; it does not only predict weather change-“the rain that beats on the roof of the house” (923), but it also foretells the emotions she would be feeling-“her equinoctial tears”. The almanac eventually tells her it is “time to plant tears”, which is a way of the grandmother knowing she is permitted to let go and move forward. Next is stove. The plot of the story revolves in the kitchen where the stove is placed. She feels at ease in her kitchen and seems to spend most of her time there. She “puts more wood in the stove” (924) when she feels chilly. The feeling of being cold can be associated with death. The stove gives her comfort that the feeling will pass. Last is house. The house resembles the grandmother. The first two lines referring to the house show the external portion. “September rain falls on the house” (923). “…and the rain that beats on the roof of the house” (923). This shows that on the outside, the grandmother is worn out and beaten down because of this loss she is experiencing. We
The story begun with the grandmother not wanting to go to Florida, but Tennessee where she has some friends to see. She ironically dresses in her Sunday best. She is dressed very nicely with, "A navy blue dress with a small white dot in the print. Her collars and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she had pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet"(382). A strong foreshadowing imagery can be seen in this line. Knowing the ending of the story, the grandmother's elaborate dress symbolizes a preparation for her funeral. When a person die, he or she usually are dressed in their best outfit, just like the grandmother is dressed in what seems to be her Sunday best.
A stronger foreshadowing is when O’Connor states the reason for the grandmother’s beautiful dress, "In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady." (11). She herself predicts her own death.
