I chose to focus my ideas and thoughts on Stan Brakhage’s film Cat’s Cradle. When I watched the film the first time around I was intrigued by the profound filming in the short film. In only six minutes Brakhage gave us so much information. My favorite part about Brakhage is that he declined to use sound in his Avant-garde films. Cat’s Cradle captured its audience with its intense dark hues of orange and red. The director Stan Brakhage set the beautiful and gentle mood. Although the Cat’s Cradle is a short film it does bring up big social issues regarding domestic roles in the household. Brakhage is showing us a strange montage on a day in his Cat’s Cradle. After watching the video a few times, I had look up the symbolism behind the meaning of a cat’s cradle. A cat’s cradle is a game done with looping strings over fingers. The game is notoriously known for its complexity and difficulty. There is also a complexity behind the montage of the film. All of Brakhage’s films we have seen in class are nothing short of masterpieces. In Window Water Baby Moving is a great comparison to the Cat’s Cradle. Window Water Baby Moving is a beautiful arrangement of images of Brakhage’s wife Jane before and after giving birth. These films have very powerful meanings behind them and they are both much better off without sound for the audience to connect. In class we have argued that a film without sound is less fulfilling and interesting. In my opinion, I find the films without sound much more interactive. Generally, sound is very distracting and can take away from the film. I find that having no sound leaves more of the film up for the audience’s
