In the book The Giver, Louis Lowry uses symbolism to induce the reader to think about the significance of an object or character in the book. She uses symbolism using objects or characters to represent something when she wants readers to think about its significance. She chooses not to tell her readers directly, but indirectly, by using symbolism. For example, she used light eyes, Gabriel and the sled as types of symbols with different meanings.
In the Giver, Jonas has pale and lighter eyes compared to the rest of the community. This makes Jonas stand out from the community. Most people in Jonas’s community have dark eyes. There were a few exceptions like Jonas who have different lighter eyes. They were the Giver of memory, Gabriel and a girl.
It is mentioned in the novel that light eyes and pale were not only a rarity but they also gave one a certain look “depth”. This shows that people with such eyes have the ability to “see beyond”, to see and understand things in depth that other people cannot see. Being able to see more deeply into objects, Jonas can see colour. Jonas’s perception of colour symbolises his perception of the complicated emotions and sensations that other people cannot perceive. He sees life differently from the rest of the community. People with pale eyes are unique. They can experience memories, emotions, see colour and hear music.

They often use objects, people, actions and words to symbolize a deeper understanding of their story and to develop their themes. They also use symbols to give clue/hints for the story in which they also develop their main characters. Throughout the boy’s life, he turned to the tree when in need. The tree always helps him and later in life the tree becomes unhappy when she thinks that she has been taken advantage from the boy. A dystopian society is what all nations are hopeful to find. In the film, The Giver by Lois Lowry, it seems to be what was achieved. This film brings heaps of critical thought with symbolism and imagery thrown at the audience like there’s no tomorrow. Although the society looks perfect, it is actually quite pessimistic and scornful. Right off the bat, the main character, Jonas captures the audience’s interest with his wit and charm. The audience knows right away that something is different about him. Louis Lowry’s The Giver uses a dystopian society as a metaphor to show how one lives without pain and lacks knowledge of other places in order to give the reader a warring that society will never be perfect. “The Giver offers experiences that enhance readers levels of inquiry and reflection.” (Friedman & Cataldo pp102-112) At First glance the novel's setting seems to be a utopia, where all possible steps are taken to eliminate pain and anguish. Often the difference between a Utopia and a Dystopia is the author’s point of view. The difference between dystopia society and a utopian society is that a “dystopia is a world that should be perfect but ends up being horrible. Imagine dystopia as a world where the government gives everything to everyone for free. You would think it would be perfect, but imagine if that government oppressed everyone. Essentially a Dystopia is a utopia that has been corrupted.” (Levitas p1) A dystopian society is “Any society considered to be a undesirable, for any number of reasons. The term was coined as a converse to a Utopia, and is most used to refer to a fictional (often near-future) society where social trends are taken to a nightmarish extreme. Dystopias are frequently frequently written as warnings, or satires, showing current trends extrapolated to a nightmarish conclusion. This is why I believe that Lowery is giving the reader a warring about how our world is changing. We have the power to stop it before it happens if we listen to warring signs and act accordingly. If we don’t listen to those signs our society will become a nightmarish environment, to live in. “ The Giver demonstrates how conflict can force us to examine our most important beliefs about what is right and true. The phrase I chose from one of Shakespeare’s plays is “eating me out of house and home.” This phrase can be taken literal, in which someone is literally eating all of someone’s food in their home. However, I think it means someone is removing the nourishment and life from someone for their own benefit. This phrase reminds me of the children's book The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein in which the tree gives and gives to the man who grows old and all that is left of the tree is the stump. We all have a giving tree and for me is it my mom, she always does stuff for me over herself, and sometimes I am “eating” the nourishment away from her because I constantly want more. Human's are not perfect, but in Jonas's community you can say that they are because nothing goes wrong, you can even say it's a normal community even though normal isn't very descriptive. Jonas has changed through The Giver by Lois Lowery in multiple ways, but now he has a better understanding of them and why things are the way they are. He knows that his community isn't like the past because he was chosen to be the receiver which he had no idea what he would have to do, but over time the Giver gets him through everything. He gets memories about the past and he isn't allowed to tell anyone about them because the community doesn't want the people knowing about what the past was like.
