In Sutton Griggs’s Imperium in Imperio, the author combats the exclusion of women by making education equal, where women have the option of developing a sense of self through school rather than being isolated in the household. Although the story is told through the view of a young male student, Belton, it is clear that his university journey was shaped by the help of women. Consider the fact that out of the three-hundred and sixty students from the South, there is a two to one ratio of Negro women at the university; as a teacher’s college, the end goal of graduation results in a position as a teacher which is a field of work known to be primarily staffed by females (Griggs 37). This negro college was founded by a female author, Harriet, which shows Nashville’s pride for women scholars. An article written in reaction to Woolf’s depiction of women by Lemaster points out that by excluding females from the large social environment of the university, not only will their self-consciousness plummet, but they will also lose motivation to seek agency, self-awareness and the power to express themselves (80). Ultimately, Sutton Griggs creates an academic atmosphere where minorities are encouraged to learn and seek justice within the institution, leading females to feel empowered and worthy of success. Griggs further explains that combination implies unity, which is shown when the female and male students come together as the Imperium, to stand up for injustice. Belton and his peers disagreed with how the only black professor was being treated in relation to the rest of the staff and in order for his plan to take action he needed the support of the female students as they are majority, “one of the young men had a sister among the young lady students, and, through her Belton’s rebellion was organized among the girls and their signatures secured”
Glenda Gilmore’s book Gender & Jim Crow shows a different point of view from a majority of history of the south and proves many convictions that are not often stated. Her stance from the African American point of view shows how harsh relations were at this time, as well as how hard they tried for equity in society. Gilmore’s portrayal of the Progressive Era is very straightforward and precise, by placing educated African American women at the center of Southern political history, instead of merely in the background.

Anne Moody mystifies the reader in her gripping and beautifully written memoir, Coming of Age in Mississippi, while paralleling her own life to the evolution of the Civil Rights movement. A college education is something that women take for granted today, but in the 1800’s it was an extremely rare thing to see a woman in college. During the mid 1800’s, schools like Oberlin and Elmira College began to accept women. Stone’s father did a wonderful thing (by 19th century standards) in loaning her the money to pay for her college education. Stone was the first woman to get a college education in Massachusetts, graduating from Oberlin College in 1843. Her first major protest was at the time of her graduation. Stone was asked to write a commencement speech for her class. But she refused, because someone else would have had to read her speech. Women were not allowed, even at Oberlin, to give a public address.
Instinctively a feminist, Lucy Diggs Slowe was an outspoken advocate for the empowerment and education of the African American female. A graduate of Howard University in 1908, Ms. Slowe cultivated her passion for gender equality with many leadership positions on the Howard campus. “She was the first president of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, the first greek letter organization for black college women” (Perkins, 1996, p. 90). After graduation Slowe went on to teach, earned a Master’s degree from Columbia University and took classes in the innovative field of Student Personnel that would eventually be her career until her death in 1937. Education for women in the 1800s was far different from what we know today. During her life, a girl was taught more necessary skills around the home than the information out of school books. A woman’s formal education was limited because her job opportunities were limited—and vice versa. Society could not conceive of a woman entering a profession such as medicine or the law and therefore did not offer her the chance to do so. It was much more important to be considered 'accomplished' than thoroughly educated. Elizabeth Bennet indicated to her sisters that she would continue to learn through reading, describing education for herself as being unstructured but accessible. If a woman desired to further he education past what her classes would teach her, she would have to do so independently, and that is what most women did.
