Cecelia Chichan, who was four when her parents and brother were among the 154 people killed when a plane went crashing down on August 16, 1987. She became known as the 'miracle child' after she was dug out of the burning wreckage by a rescuer who heard her whimper. Cecelia, who is now 31 and married has a small tattoo of an airplane on her left wrist to remind her of a tragedy that she thinks about 'daily'. She feels guilty because she is the only one of her family who survived the terrible accident. Many people argue whether or not survivors of life and death situations should feel survivor's guilt. Survivors of life and death situations should not feel survivor's guilt. One reason survivors of life and death situations should not feel survivor's
guilt, is because it keeps people from moving on. In the short story ‘The Seventh Man’ by Haruki Murakami there was a massive typhoon that killed a boy named k who was the seventh man's best friend. The seventh man was dealing with a huge amount of guilt that kept him from moving on. On page 141 it states, “They would come to me now and then like debt collectors at the door it happened whenever I was on the edge of forgetting.” The seventh man kept having nightmares and that kept him from moving on for about his whole life. If he did not feel guilty for k’s death then he would have moved on. Another reason why survivors of life and death situations should not feel survivor's guilt, is because it ruins your life. The seventh man's best friend was eaten by the thing he loved to do the most. On page 141 it states,” I always enjoyed swimming but after that day I never went back to the swimming pool.“ The seventh mans used to love to swim that was his life and now with his best friend being swallowed by the thing he loved most he could never go back. For the rest of his life he wouldn't go near the water due to a little guilt. However, some people might argue that survivors of life and death situations should feel survivor's guilt. They believe this because it is a part of the healing process. They are mistaken because if you feel too much empathy for the person then you may never heal. In the seventh man on page 141 it states “I stayed away from my home town for forty years. I never went near the seashore- or any other.” The seventh man had so much guilt that he stayed away from his home town for forty years. He didn't get to enjoy a full life because he was stuck in his guilt. The seventh man took way too long to heal and that is all because of the survivor's guilt. Survivors of life and death situations should not feel survivor's guilt. Heavy guilt keeps you from moving on from the deep tragedies that happen in ur life. Also, it keeps you from having a good and successful life. When you have a terrible accident and you lose someone doesn't dwell on the past, don't be like the seventh man move on. Survivor's guilt is bad so don't feel it.

In "F-16 Pilot Was Ready to Give Her Life on Sept. 11" written by Steve Hendrix the author writes about a pilot named Penney. She is nearly the first female pilot. Penney started off ready to pursue her career in teaching but, then changed to follow in her father's footsteps. Her father was a fighter pilot and she intended to do the same. Although, she ended up not having to do the mission in the end she was willing to give up her life.
The Lindbergh child child case was heard all around the world. This happened seven years after the “Monkey Trial” and a half century before the famous O.J Simpson case. When the news of Charles Lindbergh Jr. kidnapping, a media craze broke out and the world was in shock. This case attracted more journalists and reporters than World War I had many years ago. At first demanding $50,000 and then rising up the ante to $70,000 which made front-page headlines and news around the world. There weere many hopes and prayers that the Lindbergh baby was alive and well, But all those hopes, were crushed two months after little Lindbergh was found. Reports say a small child's body was found a few miles from the their mansion. The body was badly decomposed; on the left leg their was nothing below the knee and same for the left hand. The right arm had been chewed off by what seemed to be a pack of dogs or wild
One Child’s Courage to Survive. “ A Child Called It ” Abstract This is one of the best, yet saddest books that I have ever read. There are so many bad things out there that are happening to good people. We just have no idea.
In the United States, nearly 800,000 children are reported to be missing every year (“Key Facts”). Approximately 40% of these children are either “killed or never recovered” (“When a child…”). Elizabeth Smart, a victim of abduction, was not part of this statistic. She was finally rescued and reunited with her family after nine months of being held captive. Ten years after her abduction, she released her memoir My Story. In her memoir, Elizabeth Smart stated she used her faith and strong love for her family to stay alive during these nine months. She stated that her return to her family could not have been possible without the strong determination and courage she had. Smart’s memoir My Story highlights that in the toughest conditions, determination

The Turn of the Screw by Henry James has been the cause of many debates about whether or not the ghosts are real, or if this is a case of a woman with psychological disturbances causing her to fabricate the ghosts. The story is told in the first person narrative by the governess and is told only through her thoughts and perceptions, which makes it difficult to be certain that anything she says or sees is reliable. It starts out to be a simple ghost story, but as the story unfolds it becomes obvious that the governess has jumps to conclusions and makes wild assumptions without proof and that the supposed ghosts are products of her mental instability which was brought on by her love of her employer
“Justice cannot be for one side alone, but must be for both” (Roosevelt). The goal of America’s legal system as we know it is that everyone is given an equal opportunity to stick up for what they may or may not have done, as described by former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Also this is what officials strive for, it is not always the case. Facts can be skewed, distorted, or misrepresented to make one side seem to be guilty without a doubt and to make the other side seem as if they have done nothing wrong. The Crucible by Arthur Miller begins and ends with one-sided accusations of witchcraft. It all results from a group of girls who had been dancing in the woods. After two fall sick, the accusations begin. The girls who were dancing, especially Abigail Williams begin blaming others to look less guilty themselves. Accusations are flying left and right so that soon, hundreds are in jail and over a dozen are executed. Abby’s main goal is to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor, so she can be with John Proctor, a man she previously had an affair with. However, John is not interested in Abby and his
Video games have become a hot topic recently. There have been a lot of controversy over whether to play or not to play. The controversy is due to them being arguably more captivating than all other forms of entertainment. Video games narrate an epic tale like no other form of entertainment can. You can become immersed in video games, because of this they are both a highly entertaining escape from the real world and a complete waste of time.
Author Christine Mitchell’s “When Living is a Fate Worse Than Death” told the story of a girl Haitian named Charlotte. Charlotte was born with her brain partially positioned outside of her cranium which had to be removed or she would have not survived. Her skull had to be concealed by a wrap in order not to cause further damage. Charlotte was born with less brain cells which allowed her only to breath and not feel much of the pain. Charlotte’s parents thought that the doctor’s in Haiti did not know what was best for their daughter. The doctors in Haiti thought Charlotte should not be resuscitated, undergo anymore horrible treatments and die peacefully. Charlotte’s parents were not happy with the doctor’s guidelines and thought the United States medical care would have better technology and could save their daughter. Charlotte’s parents bought her a doll which
An argumentative essay persuades the audience or a reader to state an issue that gives some several valid and true reasons, where it can be supported by the evidence and make the audience to adopt a new belief or behavior. The argumentative essay can be also written in a MLA (Modern Language Association) or APA (American Psychological Association) format. It depends on what format you prefer. A good argumentative essay starts with a good topic where it can claim what the argumentative essay is about. It is important that topic need to have something that interests you as a writer and reader as an audience. Before writing an argumentative essay, you need to know that what kind of audience are you writing for. For example, if you are writing for a younger audience, you need to be careful about the language and sentences structure, which should be simple and short to understand. Likely, if you are writing for a highly educated audience, you need to provide
At a stage like this, and feeling this way can be dangerous for a young child’s development. For example, On the ABC show called “The Family”, young Adam was kidnapped during his mother’s rally to promote becoming the mayor. In this situation, his kidnapping affected the whole family in traumatic ways. It effected Adam tremendously because he was only 8-years-old during the kidnapping. Adam would hope that his family would find him. But, as time went on he realized he would never be found (“Sweet Jane” The Family, ABC, Television). Adam was never found because he got sick and passed while he was being held captive. There was another child with him, named Ben, which was also being held captive. Ben was finally able to escape from his captor. When a child loses hope, as Adam did, they never develop a healthy level of hopeful thinking (Wilner, 2011). Another example of a child feeling helpless after a traumatic event is myself. After my aunt passed away, I felt like there was no one to explain or help me with the pain I had and saw (Julien, 2016). My mother, sister, and I would always go to my aunt’s house, in Miami, for the summer. My mother, sister, and I always had a fantastic time with her. Then when I found out she passed, I could not help but to think what her children were going through. When your own mother dies, and you are at a young
What makes a good person good? According to WikiHow, "We should learn to define our own morals ourselves. One of the simplest ways to do so is to love others, and treat them as you would like to be treated. Try to think of others before yourself. Even doing small things daily will greatly enrich and improve your life, and the lives of others around you." This quote shows us what we need to do in order to be what society thinks as, “good". In order to be a good person, you have to do good and moral things in your society consistently. However people might think that by doing one good thing once in a while will automatically make you a “good person”, but in reality it doesn’t.
Suicide is the third leading cause of teenage death in the United States. If this is the case why wouldn’t there be more prevention programs out there for these teenagers? Suicide prevention in schools is up for debate on whether or not it would have a positive effect on teenagers, or a negative impact on their state of mind. According to the study “A Review and Application of Suicide Prevention Programs in High School Settings,” by Gregory Cooper, Cooper declares that in the long run prevention programs in schools would be beneficial to suicidal students. However, Dena Wanner the author of the study “The Impact of a Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Program on Knowledge, Attitudes, Awareness, and Response to Suicidal Youths,” believes that
