Working in the medical field for eleven years I have enjoyed every moment of it. I started off as an orderly and worked my way up to an anesthesia technician. Unfortunately, I didn't have a high school diploma or GED to maintain my position so I was let go. I was very depressed and decided that I was not going to let all my experience go to waste. Not only will I finish my basic education but I will continue and become a surgical technologist. I have always been interested in becoming a surgical technologist. Working hands on with the surgeon and helping improve patient’s health are two main reasons I would like to pursue this career. A typical day usually starts with knowing what surgeries you will participate in. The types of procedures …show more content…
Upon the patients arrival you will - need to prep the surgery cite marked by the surgeon. You will do this by the following cleaning and disinfecting procedures. During the surgery, you will be following instruction from the surgeon. As the doctor request a certain instrument you will give or take back instruments being used. This could also include sutures or lap-sponges. In certain procedures you may also be asked to hold organs or re-tractors to get the surgery done. After the surgery you will assist in applying dressings to protect the incision-cite. Upon completion of the surgery all the instruments and sponges used are accounted for. The purpose of this is to make sure none were left in the patient. Then the instruments will be taken to sterile processing department and the sponges would be disposed of properly. You have to be very safe, delicate, and vigilant with your work environment because you have a person’s life in your hands. Then we would continue to clean the room using special cleaners and disinfectants to get the room ready for your next case. Each doctor can request different room setups so it is important you refer to the surgeon procedure card. Depending on the severity of the procedure you could have between one to four cases a
As a standard precaution against bodily fluids or blood borne pathogens the medical assistant and the doctor would don their personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, face shield, and gown. Next, the medical assistant will prepare the following materials in preparation of the procedure: 1% or 2% lidocaine in a 10cc syringe/25 gauge needle, skin prep solution, #11 scalpel blade with handle, gauze, hemostat, scissors, iodoform, tape, and culture swab. After the materials have been prepped the doctor will clean the abscess with skin prep and drape the wound with sterile fenestrated drape. Anesthetic in the form of lidocaine with a 10cc syringe and 25-gauge needle will be injected around the abscess. The doctor will allow 3-5 minutes for the anesthetic to take affect before making an incision into the abscess. Once the incision is made the doctor will allow pus to ooze and drain out. While the pus is draining out, the culture swab will be inserted in to the abscess where a culture is taken so the origin of the infection is identified incase further treatment is needed. Using the hemostat the doctor will explore the abscess and continue to soak up the pus with the gauze. With a syringe and normal saline the doctor will irrigate

An orthopedic surgeon must be creative. The body is like a sculpture. When someone breaks a bone and the orthopedic surgeon has to go in and fix the bone with pins, the surgeon sometimes has to be creative with the way they put the pin in and where they screw it down. An orthopedic surgeon must like to fix things (Ryan). Orthopedic surgeons are similar to construction workers. Both use drills, saws, hammers, nails or pins, and many other tools. An orthopedic must not be afraid of blood, bones, or loud noises. When asked if ever disgusted at the beginning of medical school, Dr. Ryan was q...
A typical surgery involves three entities: the surgeon, the patient and the medium for the surgeon to perform the surgery. The medium allows the surgeon to see and interact with the patient. It may include surgical instruments, camera systems, medical imaging systems or other technologies. In a conventional open surgery
Ever since I was younger, I wanted to get into the medical field. Both my grandmothers used to work in the hospital and I would always wanted to tag along. Following them to work influenced my decision to work in a hospital. Every time I tag along, I would see many interesting things that would catch my attention and make me curious. There was a lot of materials such as the stethoscope, weighing machine, and etcetera that I would pretend to be a doctor or nurse examining imaginary people. It was absolutely perfect because I always wanted to help people. So this fall of 2014, I will be starting my education on becoming a nurse anesthetist.
There were two scrub technicians. They prepared a clean and sterile field, before each case, dressed up in the ppe, and followed surgical asepsis precautions. Their main job while doing the procedure was to provide the surgeon with the materials in which were needed in an appropriate time manner. Before the surgery took place, the ST received a card of what type of supplies were needed, by the surgeon. When the surg...
I never thought that I would purse something more than a bachelor. Actually, I am the first in my family to pursue higher schooling so I did not know much about it until I discovered physical therapy. I have been fortunate enough to have found something I love and am passionate about. Observing has given me so much motivation to continue. There have been many incredible experiences that reassure me this is what I want. At one of my observation experiences, there was a young girl that had an Ilizarov apparatus on her leg. The therapist that was working with her allowed me to help with holding a thera-band in place or tossing a ball back and forth. She told me she had come from a different country to have this procedure done. I found it so inspiring that every session she worked hard even when she did not feel her best. She also always kept a positive outlook on her situation. This was the first time I had the chance to actually interact with a patient and
I had known for years that I wanted to work in the health care field, but I always believed it would be as a doctor. I watched for the first few years of my brother’s life as he struggled with different health challenges such as being born premature, having croup and breathing difficulty, and speech impairment. Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me even at a young age to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. In high school, I was fortunate enough to do a cooperative placement at the Peterborough Regional Health Center’s Intensive Care Unit. Through observing rounds and being in the medical setting, I truly knew this is where I wanted to

Radiologic Technologists use radiation to produce images of tissue, organs, and vessels that make up the body, as well as cancer, tumors, broken bones, and tumors (Cape Fear Community College). If a person is in the medical imaging field to become a Radiologic Technologist to help people, this part of the job is what grabs their attention, because as soon as they find these problems they omit the images to a doctor that helps take care of it. Radiologic Technologist is a branch of Health Science Cluster Diagnostic services pathway (OkCollegeStart). When a person’s knows where their career choice starts it helps get a better overview of where to start and helps get them where they want to be. Radiologic Technologists review and evaluate developed x-ray, videotape, or computer generated information to determine if images are “satisfactory for diagnostic purposes” (OkCollegeStart). Persons who are more technology driven are attracted to this career because of the technology a person gets to use and process. Radiologic
Time out was done by the anesthesiologist, the circulating nurse, the surgeon, and the scrub tech all pausing before the surgery and verifying the patient’s name and date of birth, the procedure being done, the site and location on the body in which the procedure was being done, and documented the count of all the equipment the scrub nurse had before surgery to compare to after surgery. 5. The patient’s privacy was protected and respected throughout the whole surgical procedure. The staff was very professional and I felt I learned a lot from them during my OR experience. 6. A sponge count is when the scrub nurse counts the sponges that are unused before the surgery she relays this to the circulating nurse and it is documented. After the surgery the count is redone to make sure that there are no sponges left in the patient. 7. The circulating nurse documents the information and signs the chart in the operating room. From pre-op to the operating room the nurses in pre-op gave off report to the circulating nurse by SBAR. From the operating room to PACU the anesthesiologist went with the patient and handed off the patient’s condition and information to the nurse in there. 8. There were no ethical or legal issues that were raised during my observation in the whole surgical process. 9. I learned how the whole operating procedure works from start to finish, all the legal paperwork involved, and how the team interacts and helps each other out to give the patient a safe and
From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I had high hopes that one day I will become a nurse. However, that dream came to a halt.
