In January of 2012, I was playing in the first volleyball tournament of the club season. In the second game of the day, I dove to get a ball and landed wrong on my right wrist. My wrist was constantly popping and hurting when I needed to lift something. In May of 2012, my mother took me to the orthopedic doctor at Athens Orthopedic Clinic. I underwent physical therapy, took pain medicine, and played no volleyball for a month. When the month was up and there was still no improvement, I went to get a MRI. The radiologist said that there was nothing wrong, but my orthopedic referred me to an orthopedic surgeon for a second opinion. It only took a minute for my orthopedic surgeon to see what the problem was: a tear in my TFCC (a cartilage structure located on the small finger side of the wrist that, cushions and supports the small carpal bones in the wrist (Midwest). On August 8, 2013, I had surgery on my wrist. Ever since I’ve had surgery I’ve wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon. Although becoming an orthopedic surgeon takes years of education, hours of training, and hours of on-call work, orthopedic surgery’s advantages outnumber the disadvantages.
An orthopedic surgeon must be creative. The body is like a sculpture. When someone breaks a bone and the orthopedic surgeon has to go in and fix the bone with pins, the surgeon sometimes has to be creative with the way they put the pin in and where they screw it down. An orthopedic surgeon must like to fix things (Ryan). Orthopedic surgeons are similar to construction workers. Both use drills, saws, hammers, nails or pins, and many other tools. An orthopedic must not be afraid of blood, bones, or loud noises. When asked if ever disgusted at the beginning of medical school, Dr. Ryan was q...

In November of 2010, I was playing basketball in the fifth game of my senior season. It was just like any other game. However, I would soon find out otherwise. It was late in the game; I drove into the lane and got fouled hard. I was knocked so off-balance that I speared the floor with my knee. As soon as my knee hit the floor I heard a “snap” that I will never forget for the rest of my life. Little did I know at the time, that would be the last shot of my high school basketball career. Not long after my injury, I consulted a doctor. After getting an x-ray and an MRI, the doctor informed me that I had completely torn my ACL and would need to have surgery. An ACL tear can be a very devastating injury. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the four major ligaments within the knee. The ACL is one of the most commonly injured ligaments, injured by an estimated 200,000 patients each year. Of the 200,000 annual ACL injuries, surgery is performed in approximately 100,000 cases. There are many types of reconstructive surgery on the ACL. However, there is an alternative to surgery in the form of physical therapy.
My job contains a great deal of direct patient contact, to say the least. I assist the surgeon in whichever surgery the patient needs. I participate in helping cure, stabilize, comfort, and add to the patients' treatment. In order to be a good surgical tech, you must always be one step ahead of the surgeon, which inquires extensive knowledge of human anatomy and the symptoms that accompany an illness. Identifying anatomical landmarks and the normality of organs are also important qualities to have when assisting in surgery.
As soon as I started high school, my goal was to play college baseball. I played baseball for a very competitive select club that traveled out of town every week from Thursday through Sun as well as practicing every Tuesday and Wednesday. All through high school, I sacrificed my free time in the summer to prepare myself for college baseball. After receiving offers from four year universities as well as junior colleges, I decided that a junior college would provide me the best opportunity to continue to develop as a player. Even though I decided I wanted to play at a junior college, I wanted the experience of going away to college and living in a dorm so I decided to attend a junior college in Iowa where they had dorms for student athletes. Being ecstatic to be able to go off to college and play baseball was short lived. During the first month of baseball practice, I injured my arm, spent two months in physical therapy with no improvement, and then finally receiving the bad news that I would need surgery to improve. Surgery was performed over Thanksgiving break, but I was now faced with months of physical therapy, which meant
Have you ever been adjusted by a chiropractor? Have you ever been in a chiropractic office? They are always extremely busy and have very wide open space! Chiropractors also like to keep their offices clean and busy with patients so they can get more business. During the day the chiropractors office is very busy. The chiropractors are always nice and respectful to their patients. Do you know anybody that works at a chiropractic office, or even is a chiropractor? Because many chiropractors have their own family, they usually give them free or discounted adjustments. This research paper will talk about the salary, schooling requirements, and the job outlook of the chiropractor. It will also explain what chiropractors do in their job. I hope that I will become a chiropractor someday after all my college years. Hopefully Alex will start a business and invite me and ask me to work for him! He has already talked about starting a business in the tropical islands somewhere. Chiropractors can make a lot of money, they just need to know how to adjust their patients the correct way.
So i have therapy mondays and wednesday. And when i went back that monday my therapist was surprised of how good i’ve gotten, because i was able to move my knee more and bend my knee more than 70%. She told me that it was good but my goal is 120% or more, for me to get to the next step of surgery. So i focused on that, and i was putting in twice as much as work i usually put in. Because the only thing that's on my mind is to get back on the field and work my way to become stronger and better. Also do what i love to do and enjoy playing with my friends and family. That's the only thing i’m striving for is to come back healthy and strong. And not do the same mistake as i did before to put myself in that situation. Finally almost that time for me to receive a phone call from my sergeant to tell me what i should do before i come in for surgery. She told me to not eat or drink once it's 7:00 because i was scheduled to have surgery at 9:30 and also she told me not to put on any lotion on my knees. So i did what she asked me to, and that whole day i been thinking about what is going to happen and would i ever be the same and how would it take for me to come back and be fully healed. So i went to the hospital it was almost time for me to have surgery and i was kind of scared but i was really looking forward to just get it all over with it. After i got done with surgery i was in so much pain that couldn’t move at all. Because if i even tried to move my leg that i would be in so much pain that i have to drink my pain killers. Once i got home i was in so much pain that i didn’t sleep for a whole week straight. But then i started getting used to sleeping without a problem or pain. But my doctor would always called me and told me what to do or if i had any problem to just give her a call. Then i asked her the next day when i could start walking and stuff. She
The purpose of this paper is to gather all the strategies needed to be the best I can be in the future, as a professional. I will express all of my personal goals that I will strive to achieve during college. This paper will serve as a road map to my career path, and will help me better understand the job market. Currently my major is in the college of Kinesiology. The reason I have chosen kinesiology is because I am fascinated with the human body, and learning how to take care of it while it is in motion. This assignment calls for me to explore my options in this degree field by taking a career and personality assessment. Then, I will decide on a career, and major choice that interests me most. At this moment I will put forth all of my effort to obtain a degree from Sam Houston State University, and move onto becoming what employers are looking for. The research for this assignment will be coming from the Newton Gresham Library, Writing Center, Career Services, Internet, and O’Net
“You need surgery.” Just a few weeks before a national basketball tournament, these words would change my life forever. Basketball is my true passion that is a part of who I am. Unfortunately, I experienced failure at meeting my athletic aspirations, due to an injury. Although my particular injury was out of my control, I constantly felt ashamed that I could not completely fulfill my athletic goals as I had hoped. I felt I had let everyone down who had been there for me and supported me. This injury has also shaped me and changed my perspective on how I see and appreciate certain things.
As a 29-year-old medical school applicant for which I have spent 23 of them in the world of competitive figure skating. For 19 years I was a competitive figure skater, competing at both the local and national level. Figure skating was my way of life, it guided every decision I made, whether I could go hang out with friends, go on family vacations, or what types of activities I could do so that I would not become injured, hampering my skating career. In the middle of my season in 2009 such injury occurred, I was diagnosed with a bulging disc partially caused by a grade one spondylolisthesis between my lumbar and sacral vertebrae. I was told that this was the end of my skating career, I would never be able to compete on that sheet of ice that
...le feel comfortable yet not feel any pain before, during, and after surgery requires much more responsibility than it sounds but in the end it is probably one of the most rewarding careers out there.
During the ninth grade, I injured my knee playing soccer. The initial MRI did not show any tears, but the orthapedic surgeon did notice I was weak medially and that my patella was tracking laterally. He sent me to therapy to strengthen the inside of my leg and hopefully pull my kneecap medially. I started going to therapy and I adored my therapist, Kelley. Even though the exercises weren’t always fun or pain free I looked forward to therapy. She made things fun, and since I was interested in the field, would explain why I was doing certain exercises compared to others. The pain didn’t go away and she worked to help figure ...
The ultimate goal for myself, and the initial reason for studying with the Distance Learning Centre, is to become an Operating Department Practitioner(ODP). The role will involve working within operating theatres inside hospitals to support patients throughout their time during certain operations, or ‘periopertive journey’ (Health Education England, 2014b). I came to the decision to focus on making this my chosen career in November 2012 through word of mouth and a significant amount of research. The profession carries an extensive list of positives and negatives, along with how well it fits my personality and previous experiences; despite never working within the health sector previously.
The surgery was easy because I had good doctors and medication, but I was more mentally hurt. All the blood, seat, and time I spent on the offseason so I have one of the best seasons went down the drain. I was depressed; I just wanted to do was lie down in bed all day like an old man. I felt like there was no point; my grades wen down even though I was an honor student, I was in an all-time low, I could of died for all I cared. I needed something, because I was alive, but I was dead inside. But I found hope by my physical therapist who told me that there was a chance I could play again before the season was over. It was like I was risen from the dead because I was excited, he told my how hard it would be, but if I put in the work that there would be a chance. The next weeks, I worked harder than ever, there was no way that I wouldn’t play again that season-I was like a rat chasing cheese- I was willing to do anything to play again. There was time I was in pain, but I wouldn’t stop. As I got better I kept asking my therapist if I could play yet, he kept saying maybe next week. I kind of had given up on asking him, until one day after a session he looked me in the eyes and said I was

The profession I plan to pursue after graduation is Physical Therapy. Physical Therapist are clinicians who work in a variety of healthcare settings such as hospitals, orthopedic institutes, and nursing homes to name a few. These highly skill professionals diagnose and treat folks who have medical problems, athletic injuries, or other deteriorating health conditions involving their musculoskeletal system. Patients are sent to physical therapists in order to get "hands on" on care for their conditions. In order to maintain a healthier lifestyle, physical therapists exercise prevention techniques with their patients. These techniques could include developing fitness exercises and wellness programs that can be consistently followed by their patients. As I grew older, I developed an attraction towards sports medicine/rehabilitation which could be exemplified by my profession of choice. Physical Therapists are able to combine health with athletes involved in sports, a niche I could definitely see myself in the future.
