Parents know best, or at least that is what some assume. All over the world men and women alike are being forced to marry someone that their parent picked for them. These marriages are not based on love, but on tradition and social hierarchy. I strongly believe that arranged marriages should be eliminated. After all, most arranged marriages are based on the parents’ view that their own social gaining is above their child’s freedom, human rights, and health, which is absolutely appalling. Freedom is a desired right, and I believe everyone should have the right to make their own choices. Tradition comes through generations from a distant past. As the world grows and time changes, the practices and beliefs of the people within the world change as well. This is no longer the time of restrainment and strict rules. The customs have changed, and people no longer need the guidance that was valued in past times. This is the present day where people have the knowledge and consciousness to choose for themselves. Material items are not as significant as the emotional ties between family members. I, personally, would rather stay with my family than marrying a man that I do not know and having the wealth that may come with the marriage. Secondly, the rights of the girls are eradicated within the marriage because the wife becomes subservient to the husband. According to one articles, the job of the wife is to obey the husband (“Child Brides” 3). The wife should have just as much power within the home as the husband, in my opinion.
