Superman is one of the greatest superheroes to have ever lived. Since Superman’s creation he has been America’s Man of Steel for around seventy-five years. However, the awesome character was created by two not so super, high school teenagers, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, which ultimately shows, throughout Superman’s life in a comic book, anyone can be anything if they just put their mind to it. Superman has fought America’s battles with his all-powerful strength and unbiased view of people; most importantly, the man never gives up. Based on the criteria identified by Jencks who states, “Not only does a rhetorical object express the values…ideologies, hopes, fears, religion, [and] social structure” (qtd. In Burchardt 608), Superman is clearly an example of a rhetorical object.
Superman’s strength is absolutely amazing. The Man of Steel can fling cars around Metropolis, lift buildings with one hand, turn back time through flight, and stop bullets with his two eyes. He can do all of this while keeping a love affair with Lois Lane, who is unaware that the two men in her life are one. By far, Superman’s most impressive ability is to fly; the man can jump in the air and soar to save the world. He would shout, “Up, up, and away!” (Superman), as he flew to rescue someone in need of help. Superman could have taken over the world in one day and become a super-villain by using his powers for greed. Instead he fought the selfishness of Lex Luthor who was driven by his lust for money. Superman could have turned his back on America and watch the world turn to rubble if he did not save anyone. Maybe Superman did not turn selfish and violent because he felt that he was just like everyone else in America, minus the super-natural powers. The car...

Based on the criteria identified by Jencks who states, “Not only does a rhetorical object express the values…ideologies, hopes, fears, religion, [and] social structure” (qtd. In Burchardt 608). Superman has been proved to clearly be a proper example of a rhetorical object. Superman helped America fight its own battles while he fought his. He is an immigrant who found love and made something out of himself. The cartoon savior gives the world a hero, someone to look up too, and push to be virtuous and caring. Superman is a volunteer to help, while asking for nothing in return but for America to hopefully pass the help forward.

Heinrichs had previously worked as a journalist before becoming a full time writer and advocate for rhetoric. He utilizes illustrative examples to convey rhetorical concepts. Furthermore, chapter four reveals the most valuable logos and pathos tactic. Lastly, this book’s use should be continued in this course.
Writers use rhetoric to communicate their specific point of view or argument in a speech or text. A reader analyzes the writer’s use of rhetoric to evaluate the effectiveness of the given argument or point of view. In his “Interfaith Prayer Vigil Address,” President Barack Obama argues the need for more restricted gun control by using emotional appeals to compassion and paternalism, collective diction, and structure, which reflect the influence of a school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
The author’s main argument in “Rhetoric: Making Sense of Human Interaction and Meaning-Making” is that rhetoric does not need to be complicated if writers incorporate certain elements to their writing. Downs further analyzed the elements that contribute to rhetoric such as symbols and signals, motivation, emotion, ecology, reasoning and identification. The author emphasized that writers can learn how to deliver their writing effectively once they are more aware on how rhetoric works. Downs constantly assures that rhetoric is quite simple and does not need to provoke fuzziness. Even though the term rhetorical is applied to everything, the author of the article made it clear that the “rhetorical” thing is situated. The example provided by the author in this article, further guides our understanding on what rhetoric
In former Civil Rights Activist, Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech “Beyond Vietnam-- A Time to Break Silence”, he asserts that the war in Vietnam is utterly immoral and has a far negative implication, not only for Vietnam but for the United States as well. In this speech, King uses three main rhetorical devices, in order to strengthen his position on this war. The three main rhetorical devices: ethos, pathos, and logos, are universally considered as the three necessary tools of persuasion in literature.
One of the many types of rhetorical strategies present in the speech is Logos. Logos is a type of rhetorical appeal that utilizes information to persuade the reader into believing the author’s argument. King utilized Logos in the speech as an effort to persuade the
Have you ever wondered how influential people write great speeches that grab people's attention? They use a literary device called, rhetorical appeals. As supported in Hillary Clinton’s November 03, 2016 speech, uniting the American Public, will lead to an advantageous country. In her speech for the Democratic National Convention it states that, as elected for president, she will get everyone saying “We” instead of “I”. To reach out to the American Citizens and grab their attention, Clinton uses many rhetorical devices as she speaks. Using Logos, Pathos, and Ethos, the people of America jump on board with Clinton's ideas.
Therefore, is a misunderstood outcast, rather than valued, kingly hero. However If batman isn't a hero because of the damage he does, then none of the superheroes are heroes. Superman does damage to buildings roads people, even he could be considered an anti hero by these terms. Batman's motivation is revenge but the fact is he isn't going after black people or something. He saw what happened to him and he was motivated to stop it from happening
Rhetorical Analysis of Artifacts: The Ballot or the Bullet? Speech Given by Malcolm X I. Introduction: Though almost half a century has passed, the Civil War. The Rights Movement remains one freshly imprinted in not only the history. books of US schools, but also in the minds of countless Americans.
The impact and effectiveness of using proper rhetoric was a strategy of “good” writing that I was not aware of until my senior year of high school. While taking AP Language and Composition my junior year, my fellow students and I believed that we had survived countless essay workshop activities and writing assignments with emphasis on word choices, grammatical structure, syntax, punctuation and spelling. By the time we had entered AP Literature our senior year, we felt we could achieve success; we already knew how to write in the correct format and structur...
The use of a variety of rhetorical strategies help to strengthen a speaker’s argument. In the speech “The Ballot or the Bullet,” Malcolm X uses the basic premises of the rhetorical situation, stasis theory, and the rhetorical appeals in order to emphasize the mistreatment and discrimination that African-American citizens have experienced. Throughout the speech, Malcolm X encourages black citizens to demand their right to vote as well as inspire them to be ready to take up arms if the government continues to deny their human rights. In this paper I will show that (X) through highlighting the hypocritical nature of American democracy, (Y) Malcolm X provokes feelings of anger (Z) in order to inspire his audience of African-American citizens to
Rhetoric is the use of words, through speech or writings, for the sake of persuasion and argument. The name Aristotle is known around the world. He is one of the most famous philosophers throughout history. Aristotle introduced to us the concept of the Rhetorical Triangle and three Rhetorical Appeals in order to apply structure to persuasion and argument. The Rhetorical Triangle, consists of the audience, the author, and the text, or message. Each Rhetorical Appeal corresponds to a point of the triangle. Logos, which is Greek for words, follows logic and applies to the text. The Greek word for character is ethos, it refers to credibility applies to the authority of the author to speak on the given subject.
Rhetoric is something that we use constantly in our everyday life. Unbeknown to us, we have been using the persuasive appeals of pathos, ethos and logos even for the most mundane things. Rhetoric can be seen everywhere in our everyday’s lives in form of media, religion, politics, government propaganda, historic references and social media. We should learn to identify and appropriately use the different categories of rhetoric expressions in an effective manner. Rhetoric is the study of effective speaking and writing in order to convince the audience or the reader. It is sued to convince the audience to think in the same way as the arguer or the presenter.
The Art of Rhetoric can be very effective when used in a documentary. For example, in “Waiting for Superman,” the director uses Ethos, Pathos, and Logos to tell and persuade the viewer that the public school system is broken, which he does very effectively.
Superman felt many temptations and challenges. Some of the challenges he faced was him having trouble hiding his powers, showing off to Louis Lane, hiding his identity, and fitting in. You can see how he is faced with the challenge of hiding his identity when he came to Louis Lane’s house as Clark Kent and almost told her who he really was. Since Louis Lane was superman’s love interest he would show off a little to impress her, but it was dangerous because him showing off to her gave his enemies the answers to how to destroy him. You can also see him having the trouble of fitting in when he was in high school. An example of this is how he wanted to be in sports and be like a normal teenager in high
Does Captain America embody the definition of a patriotic hero? What is a hero? “A person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” What is patriotism? “Patriotism is an emotional attachment to a nation which an individual recognizes as their homeland. This attachment, also known as national feeling or national pride, can be viewed in terms of different features relating to one 's own nation, including ethnic, cultural, political or historical aspects.” Captain America shows he’s a patriotic hero by simply his uniform, compassion, and strength. Not everyone in America has those things, and that upon many other things is what’s wrong with America.
