Supercapacitors Essay

1. Introduction Storage of electrical energy is very important in many applications especially electrical appliances which require mobility or short burst of energy over a short duration of time. There had been many technologies developed to emulate characteristics of an ideal power supply which can store large amounts of energy, providing good power output as well as being able to be charged and discharged rapidly without deterioration of any type. A typical power storage device can be characterized by its power density and its energy density, noting that with our current technology, none which can achieve the best of both. A relatively new technology, electrochemical double-layer capacitors or also known as supercapacitors, ultracapacitors …show more content…

However, it has received a lot of attention due to its ability to reduce the gap between batteries and supercapacitors or potentially, better both capacitors and batteries in terms of power density and energy density. These alone had led manufacturers to explore the many new possibilities to fully harness the advantages supercapacitors can offer. The applications of supercapacitors can be primarily divided into 4 categories, namely energy storage systems, battery improvement systems or peak power boost systems, power smoothing and power factor …show more content…

Unlike batteries, supercapacitors can operate under punishing conditions, which there power generation systems are usually subjected to harsh conditions, for example a solar power generation system being subjected to the burning heat of the sun. Batteries when used under such conditions, display reduced efficiency or might not even perform its function at all. Even if batteries were to be used, additional costs might be required to maintain auxiliary systems which maintain the operating conditions of these batteries. Another advantage supercapacitors hold over batteries are that supercapacitors have a much more superior charging efficiency compared to batteries [36]. When being recharged, supercapacitor loses lesser energy compared to batteries, in a world where efficiency is everything, and people are striving to minimize loses Supercapacitor in this case, had already made a decent enough case for
