The End of Corporate Computing Summary
In his article, Nicholas G. Carr discusses the future of information technology and how it will change from something that each individual company will have to produce themselves, to a system where larger companies can purchase it from an outside corporation as a utility. He begins by comparing the future of IT to what happened to electricity and how it underwent a change from a luxury to a commodity. He explained how this transformation underwent its course due to the fact that a single innovator, Samuel Insull, was able to innovate technology in a new way to create a form of mass electrical energy production. as, with the current state of where this technology is at, it has shown to be unsustainable with the amounts of computing that is necessary. Carr states later in the article that currently companies are not using servers to their potential and much of the possible computing power is being wasted.
Workers are also not being used to their full potential as the majority of the IT budget is going towards them to maintain the current system that they have in place. Carr determines that these problems can be fixed with relative ease by combining three different technologies, Web services, virtualization, and grid computing. The combination will allow for less technology to be wasted and processing power to be used to its full capacity. He tells the reader, this is what the individual will have to do to advance the information technology environment to its fullest potential and continues by listing examples of some of the possible corporations and sources from where this individual could come from, including big computing hardware contributors, information technology hosting operations, an internet extraordinaire and new start up innovators. He concludes the article by pointing out that as dubious as this may be, many other innovations similar to this started the same way and people should not fear to take action on this opportunity, as it will better humanity. I believe that the article provides some good points as it shows us that the
computing in businesses as it currently is cannot be sustained. However, I also believe that this process is still years, maybe even decades away from becoming a reality as nobody is truly ready to take such a risk to start up as big of a project as this. Even if the technology is ready, bigger companies will not be willing to take a risk as big as this and newer startups do not have the funds to start up something as this fairly easily. Times have changed since the introduction of electricity as the world has gotten a lot bigger and business has become a harder to become big in than before with all the competition. Though, the change will eventually take place as this problem becomes bigger and, similar to most large problems, it will be solved and the innovator who solves it will be rewarded handsomely.
...nd again resulting in creation of bigger markets and pulling large competitors and creating new job opportunities, but the problem is with undefined factors like outsourcing, lack of skill development in respect with technology advancement. Technology advancement may be causing huge impact on employment but it is also making human living better. Technology as became part and parcel of our life so we can’t think of life without technology, but to make sure that the same does not harm our livelihood we should keep in track and sharpen and hone our skills with advancement of technology. When it comes to the definition of technology in their articles, both Carr and Cascio have similarities and differences. Both authors are debating about the use of technology in today’s society. To further shore up his "IT as commodity" theory, Carr cites the fact that major technology vendors, such as Microsoft and IBM, are positioning themselves as "IT utilities," companies that control the provision of business applications over "the grid." Couple this IT-as-utility trend with the rapidly decreasing cost of processing power, data storage and transmission, and even the most "cutting-edge IT capabilities quickly become available to all."

If nineteenth century was an era of the Industrial revolution in Europe, I would say that computer and Information Technology have domineered since the twentieth century. The world today is a void without computers, be it healthcare, commerce or any other field, the industry won’t thrive without Information Technology and Computer Science. This ever-growing field of technology has aroused interest in me since my childhood.
"Technology is like fish. The longer it stays on the shelf, the less desirable it becomes." (1) Since the dawn of computers, there has always been a want for a faster, better technology. These needs can be provided for quickly, but become obsolete even quicker. In 1981, the first "true portable computer", the Osborne 1 was introduced by the Osborne Computer Corporation. (2) This computer revolutionized the way that computers were used and introduced a brand new working opportunity.
With the UNIVAC gaining popularity some people began thinking that the computer was the next step towards a better technological future. Tom Watson Jr. was one of the few that saw a great future in computers. After struggling to convince his father that the computer was the next step in business Watson Jr. began development on the IBM 650. While the IBM 650 wasn’t technologically better than the UNIVAC it did sell better. Tom Watson Jr. brought an IBM company which previously declared that computers will have no place in the homes of America to a thriving business. While computers seemed to be doing wonders for businesses it didn’t truly ‘hit home’ until the birth of the internet.
As Jamaica and the rest of the world gradually moves into the future, an ever so rapidly revolving future that is more technologically advanced than it was, 25 years ago. Technology is one of the principal driving forces of the future; it is transforming our lives and shaping our future at rates unprecedented in history, with profound implications, which we cannot even begin to see or understand.
