An Analysis of Literary Devices in Margaret Atwood’s “This is a Photograph of Me” A poet, novelist, story writer, essayist and environmental activist; Margaret Atwood (1939-) is considered to be one of Canada’s greatest writers. She has won several prizes in literature such as the Booker Prize, the Arthur C. Clarke Award and the Governor General’s Award. As well Margaret Atwood has served as a Writer-In-Residence and a lecturer at many colleges and universities around the world. She is known in her poems for her strong support of feminism, social justice and environmentalism. A common theme for the females in her poems is suffering, and she explained the reason for this to Judy Klemesrud of the New York Times. She said that “My women suffer because most of the women I talk to seem to have suffered. As well in another interview with Lindsy Van Gelder of Ms., Margaret Atwood said “I began as a profoundly apolitical writer, but then I began to do what all novelists and some poets do: I began to describe the world around me”. Atwood’s writing is said to describe a very important theme in Canadian literature, the theme being victims and their ability to survive in unforgiving circumstances. As well she writes about destructive gender roles and expresses her concern about the role Canada plays to the U.S.A. These could be compared to the victim/victor theme in literature. Margaret Atwood usually writes poems that reflect what she is experiencing in real life; this is shown in the book of poetry “Morning in the Burned House”, this book of poetry contains many poems that deal with grief and loss. By using a photograph Atwood is telling us that discrimination against women does exist and it is not made up. To conclude Atwood uses a photograph to capture a time in history that is very significant for women. This poem written by Margaret Atwood is a poem that describes the troubles women face in everyday life because of the discrimination towards them. It tells us that they live in a world dominated by men where they as women have little say in what goes on around them. Women are expected to conform to what society has laid out for them. By using symbolism, parentheses, illusion and photographs Atwood creates a beautiful poem that captures all the aspects of the struggles of women while still entertaining the reader. Through this poem Atwood has encouraged us as readers to open our eyes and take a stand against this discrimination.
