“The Street of the Cañon” is located in a small town in San Juan Iglesias at a girl’s 18 year old birthday party. Josephina Niggli, the author, explained the idea that young love can break down the boundaries of previous hatred. “The Highwayman” is located in a mysterious hotel with the idea of forbidden love between the characters, Bess and the Highwayman. Alfred Noyes, the author, explained the idea that love is stronger than death. Since the short stories, “The Street of the Cañon” and “The Highwayman” are both about love, character, setting, and style influence the ways that the audience looks at each story. Josephina Niggli wrote about forbidden love with two characters, Pepe Gonzalez and Sarita, in the short story “The Street of the Cañon”. Pepe Gonzalez is a very mysterious man. Pepe is also very daring for coming into the party of his enemies. His goal was to dance with Sarita and then leave if they figured out why he was at Sarita’s 18th birthday party. In the story, Pepe came and made eye contact with Sarita and knowing that she …show more content…
was the mayor’s daughter, went over to her. Sarita, the daughter of a well known man, doesn’t really show emotion about different things. For example, when she said that she might have just danced with the devil, she was very calm and wasn’t freaking out. Sarita was also very flirty towards Pepe. She used the fan to look flirty and then went and hide next to her servant. Her goal when she went and hid by the servant was for Pepe to follow her showed her flirty personality that she wanted Pepe to follow instead of going towards Pepe. Niggli wrote about the mysterious towns of San Juan Iglesias and Hidalgo. The whole story took place in the Valley of the Three Marys located in San Juan, Mexico. The author wrote. “It was May, the flowering thorn was sweet in the air.” This sentence tells us that “The Street of the Cañon” took place in May, in the springtime. Sarita’s birthday party took place in a house in San Juan Iglesias during the night. It took place at night because the author says, “..an Hidalgo man dared to walk alone in the moonlit streets of San Juan Iglesias.” It shows that the streets are lit by the moonlight, which means later at night. The style of “The Street of the Cañon” was very different than a lot of stories.
“The Street of the Cañon” was a short story that was written by a girl. The story was very mysterious and had a lot of romance. The story was very mysterious because Sarita didn’t know who “the stranger” was and she danced with him at her 18th birthday party. This story was also romantic because of how they instantly fell in love without even knowing each other's’ name or anything about them. “The Street of the Cañon”, a story about forbidden love between Pepe and Sarita, is located in the mysterious town of San Iglesias. “The Street of the Cañon” talks about two enemies that fall in love while “The Highwayman” talks about two people that are in love with one another even though another character that wants them separated. “The Highwayman” shows that love is a sacrifice with the characters, Bess and the Highwayman, located in a mysterious old
hotel. Alfred Noyes wrote about forbidden love between two characters, “The Highwayman” and Bess, in “The Highwayman”. Bess, the landlord’s daughter, has a crush on the Highwayman. She has long, black hair and red lipstick. Bess is very calm. For example, she knows that the Highwayman is a robber but she still loves him and doesn’t freak out. The Highwayman is a robber that is in love with Bess. In the story, The Highwayman says “One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I’m after a prize tonight”. This shows that the Highwayman is in love with Bess. Both of these characters were in love with one another even though Tim tried to keep them away from each other. In the end of the story, both characters got shot and killed by the soldiers. “The Highwayman” took place in a mysterious old hotel in the middle of the night. This story relies on the darkness of the night to keep readers attached and so they can picture it in their head easier. The first sentence of the story, “The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees”, shows that it was dark, cloudy, and windy. The setting gives the story a lot of suspense because of how Alfred Noyes describes it. “The Highwayman” was a poem that was separated into stanzas by roman numerals. This story was a folk tale written by a boy. It was different than many stories because of how the poem was arranged. “The Highwayman” was very mysterious and sad with a lot of romance. A lot of stories don’t have mystery, sad, and romantic so Alfred Noyes should get a lot of credit for the way that he wrote “The Highwayman”.
Last but not least, O’Connor confirms that even a short story is a multi-layer compound that on the surface may deter even the most enthusiastic reader, but when handled with more care, it conveys universal truths by means of straightforward or violent situations. She herself wished her message to appeal to the readers who, if careful enough, “(…)will come to see it as something more than an account of a family murdered on the way to Florida.”
Both texts present varying ideas of journeys, as characters in both texts come to realisations about their true natures, reflect on their past choices and gain a deeper understanding into personal relationships. In both texts characters come to realisations in their journeys that create a deep understanding of many aspects of their
The concrete images of “Cherrylog Road” can say a lot when the reader digs deeper into what the images actually symbolize. In “Cherrylog Road” the
Literature of the Americas has many stories and they all have comparisons, but they also have many differences. “Day of the Butterfly” by Alice Monro and “Crossroads: A Sad Vaudeville” by Carlos Solórzano have characters that share some traits and ways, but like all characters they have things that are different. The old woman from “A Sad Vaudeville” is a dynamic protagonist who finds herself meeting the perfect man for her, but has a dilemma when he is in denial because she is not the ideal girl of his dreams; she’s old. Myra from “Day of the Butterfly” is a static antagonist who does not have the same care free attitude as most of the children her own age. She is rather shy and does not fit in or socialize much with people her own age.
Sandra Cisneros’s short story “Never Marry a Mexican” deals heavily with the concept of myth in literature, more specifically the myth La Malinche, which focuses on women, and how their lives are spun in the shadows on men (Fitts). Myths help power some of the beliefs of entire cultures or civilizations. She gives the reader the mind of a Mexican-American woman who seems traitorous to her friends, family and people she is close to. This causes destruction in her path in the form of love, power, heartbreak, hatred, and an intent to do harm to another, which are themes of myth in literature. The unreliable narrator of this story was created in this story with the purpose to show her confusion and what coming from two completely different cultures can do to a person, and what kind of confusion it can bring.
In this poem the main character is lustful of both the new man she has met in Paris as well as the man she left behind her homeland, although she was under the false perception that it was love. The often confused words 'love' and 'lust' are becoming used interchangeably more and more every day. Indeed, many definitions are being loosened up, and many words are being used improperly. When people use the words 'love' and 'lust', they should be more careful which word it is that they mean to say.
From the beginning of fiction, authors have constantly exploited the one topic that is sure to secure an audience: love. From the tragic romance of Tristan and Isolde to the satirical misadventures in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, literature seems obsessed with deciphering the mysteries of affection. The concept most debated is the question of where the line falls between lust and love and what occurs when the two are combined, and few portray it more clearly than Edmund Rostand in his French drama Cyrano de Bergerac. The influence of fickle physical attraction and deep romantic love on each other are explored by the interactions of the four main characters: De Guiche, Christian, Roxane, and Cyrano.
Here he presents use with some of the main characters who are Nayeli, Tacho, Vampi, Yolo, Matt, and Atomiko. The girls have been affected by the absence of the town’s men who have left the small town to seek work in the United States. The purpose in presenting us with the information of why these men have left the town is to present the fact, of why so many others in small towns like this one have left their towns, in search for work. He also provides a personal account of the everyday life of the people of Tres Camarones in a way that the reader can get a better idea of life in a small Mexican town. One of the main characters Nayeli is a dreamer, who fantasizes about living in a U.S. city and whose father that has left the town to the new world to seek work. The father was the town police man and someone who Nayeli looked up to. Nayeli and her friends take on a task to bring back seven men from the United States, for the purpose of helping to deal with the narcols that have threaten the daily life of the town’s people. But also feel that it is there duty to repopulate the town and prevent it from dying out. At this point the story takes on a different meaning and a new direction of heroism to save the town from the bad men. But the journey has many borders that the girls and one guy have to encounter in order to be successful. There are many different social and
In every story, there is a protagonist and an antagonist, good and evil, love and hatred, one the antithesis of the other. To preserve children’s innocence, literature usually emphasizes on the notion that love is insurmountable and that it is the most beautiful and powerful force the world knows of, yet Gen’s and Carmen’s love, ever glorious, never prevails. They each have dreams of a future together, “he takes Carmen’s hand and leads her out the gate at the end of the front walkway… together they… simply walk out into the capital city of the host country. Nobody knows to stop them. They are not famous and nobody cares. They go to an airport and find a flight back to Japan and they live there, together, happily and forever” in which their love is the only matter that holds significance (261). The china
middle of paper ... ... ories, but on a realistic-fiction scenario. A slum neighborhood located in “Yes, Ma’m” and a brilliant train carriage in “The Storyteller” create the setting for this compare and contrast essay. These short stories are similar in that their themes both focus on negative objects, but play them into a positive light.
“Everett was strange, “Sleight concedes. “kind of different. But him and McCandless, at least they tried to follow their dream. That’s what was great about them. They tried. Not many do.” (67) John Krakauer’s book, Into the Wild, briefly makes a comparison between two young boys Chris McCandless and Everett Ruess and fills the reader with different perspectives about them and their experiences. While the author wrote about McCandless he is reminded of Ruess and his book Everett Ruess: A Vagabond for Beauty written by W.L. Rusho and it sparked an interesting comparison between the two. The use of storytelling and letters about McCandless and the use of Artwork, letters,
Time and again, history has created a star-crossed couple that overcomes all obstacles through the strength of love. Whether it is from Pyramus and Thisbe, Romeo and Juliet, or Jack and Rose, the only possibility to separate the couple is the death of one or both individuals. Love is defined in these relationships as fighting against all odds, class, society, and even family, in order to be with their loved one. While these stories may be fictional, history has presented a real case of star-crossed “lovers”, Peter Abelard and Heloise. This couple went to little length to fight society in trying to establish a relationship with one another. Although considered a love story to some, a relationship founded on lust, inability to fight for marriage, and union to the church, shatters the illusion of romance and shows the relationship for what it truly is, a lackluster liaison.
Love is a concept that has puzzled humanity for centuries. This attachment of one human being to another, not seen as intensely in other organisms, is something people just cannot wrap their heads around easily. So, in an effort to understand, people write their thoughts down. Stories of love, theories of love, memories of love; they all help us come closer to better knowing this emotional bond. One writer in particular, Sei Shōnagon, explains two types of lovers in her essay "A Lover’s Departure": the good and the bad.
However, the nature of this love is different in each story. In “Araby”, it is an innocent, pure, platonic feeling that completely changes the life of the character exerting an enormous influence on his psychological state. The boy has lost interest in everyday life. He cannot concentrate on his studying; he does not play with his friends; he can think about nothing else except for his beloved. For him, the lady is like a symbol of blissful happiness, a goddess; his love to her is sacred: “Her name sprang to my lips at moments in strange prayers and praises which I myself did not understand” (108).It explains the strong feeling of the boy for the girl. With Eveline, the situation is different. It is difficult to say for sure whether she indeed loves Frank or not. She thinks about him only as about a person who will help her to achieve her aim. She does not feel any tenderness, any passion to him –any of those feelings that are associated with real love. For her, the young man is a means, although she does not consciously treat him like that. She praises his virtues seeing that Frank is “kind, manly, open-hearted” (3), that he is interesting as a personality; she is proud to be his beloved. Still, it seems that Eveline is not in love with him. She admits that “it had been an excitement for her to have a fellow and then she had begun to like him” (3). She is simply pleased to have a
Love has been expressed since the beginning of time; since Adam and Eve. Each culture expresses its love in its own special way. Though out history, though, it’s aspect has always been the same. Love has been a major characteristic of literature also. One of the most famous works in literary history is, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. This story deals with the love of a man and a woman who’s families have been sworn enemies. There love surpassed the hatred in which the families endured for generations. In the end they both ended up killing their selves, for one could not live without the other. This story is a perfect example of true love.
