In the short story of “The Lottery” you are introduced to a normal day in any village where town folks are greeting each other, and making small talk amongst each other. Also, the children playing on the ground, gathering rocks and placing them in large piles, just like any kind of active kid would like to do. However, what seems to be a normal day in any town is nothing what is seems like. An annual game of “lottery” is waiting for this town where someone will have a lucky day, or so it seems.

The story begins by talking about a “lottery” which most people would think of as a game of chance, but in this story, the lottery has a plot twist to it. The lottery in this story is when the people of the town get together once a year to draw slips of paper from a black box. All of the slips of paper will be blank except for one. Lives are at stake when it comes to the annual ritual and it is every man for themselves, but for the reason that it will benefit the villagers and their town in some way. Noticing the names of the villagers too gives the sense and feeling of how life is viewed, such as Mrs. Graves and Mrs. Delacroix. Mrs. Graves last name stands for the obvious which is the graves that are within the cemetery and is where the bodies of the dead lay to rest once they have died, Mrs. Delacroix stands for “of the cross” and that means for those who believe in religion and attend to church will receive a cross. For those that think it is unfair to die there is more to death and it can be beneficial and you can either be pleased knowing that you will be taken care of or either plead about how unfair it is that your life may seem to have been taken too
