Pavel Friedman achieves his purpose in the poem “The Butterfly” by using figurative language, symbolism, and imagery. Friedman wants the reader to understand that when individuals move into the Theresienstadt ghetto there was no hope to enjoy the past happiness and escape the horrible conditions. In the beginning of the poem, Friedman uses figurative language to cleverly describe the small things that allow him to be happy. Before Friedman moved into the ghetto, joy,in his mind, was the yellow butterflies who were, “So richly dazzling yellow/perhaps if the sun’s tears would cry against a white stone”.
