Jasmin Neelon Shanice Fokuoh ENG2D0-Q May 24, 2024. The Danger of Ignorance Desmond Tutu once said, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” When a ROTC student, Rashad Butler, faces police brutality, people at his school start to take sides and go against one another, each having a different viewpoint on what they believe happened that led to his arrest. In the novel All American Boys, the author suggests that ignoring racial issues allows one to be naive. This is seen by highlighting the contrasting experiences of Guzzo, Quinn, and English. Firstly, Guzzo, the brother of the cop who arrested Rashad, shows throughout his many experiences that he refuses to educate himself as to what happened. …show more content…

Although he was not there to see what happened during the arrest, he knows that Rashad is a good person. When Quinn says that Rashad is not dead, English retaliates by saying the following: “But he could be. You have no idea what to do. You have no idea Quinn. The point is, he could be. Then what is the answer? Is that what it would take to look at this thing differently? You need him to be dead?” (175). Quinn fails to understand the lengths that the cop went to over Rashad allegedly stealing a bag of chips. English is willing to talk to Quinn, although he has disrespected Rashad multiple times and is still willing to work with him. To add on, English has been stopped by cops before, so he knows how Rashad feels. “I’ve been stopped on the street... More than once. Cops wanted me to lift my shirt so they could see if I had weapons on me. Pat-downs and all that” (201-202). Although English’s encounter with the police is not as brutal as Rashad’s, he has gone through similar experiences and had not told anybody until his friends started to share their own stories. In addition, during a conversation about the protest, English talked about a basketball game that they had done and how they changed the name from Fist to Rashad. At this point, I don’t care. It ain’t like people ain’t thinkin’ ‘bout it anyway. It’s on everybody’s mind.” (280). Although all of English’s scholarships depend on his basketball skills, he is willing to get benched for something that he believes is right. He puts what is morally correct ahead of what he has been working for, which demonstrates his lack of ignorance and willingness to help others. To conclude, in the novel All American Boys, Jason Reynolds demonstrates that ignoring racial issues allows one to be naive. This is demonstrated when Guzzo starts to lash out at his friends and even harm Quinn to try and prove his point.
