Reading is an expertise that can educate us, influence us, and indulge us, all at the same time. While reading stories, we lose connection with the world surrounding us allowing our imaginations to grow. The question that arises is, what characteristics contribute to creating a successful short story? The author’s goal is to capture and maintain the reader’s interest throughout the story by using concentrated details, a condensed plot and focusing on a single character. These characteristics will keep the reader fascinated till the closing of the story.

Sometimes it hardened and seemed to expand until I felt my guts were going to come spilling out or that I was going to choke or scream,” (Baldwin 37) enables the reader to imagine and feel the depth of his fear for his brother. The use of intensive details is an important asset in creating sympathy in the reader.

  A compressed and intriguing plot is an essential element in short fiction. The reader gains suspicion and curiosity if the main characters inhabit a believable and interesting situation such as in “Sonny’s Blues.” A young jazz musician who addicted to heroin is arrested for using and selling drugs, but then returns to his childhood neighbourhood after his release from prison where he tries to mend relationships with members of his family. This story compacts family, music and trying to overcome life’s struggles throughout the plot.

Another way for an author to create a compelling short story is through effective characterization. From the onset of “Sonny’s Blues,” James Baldwin uses characterization to identify that tragedy and suffering can be transformed by an art, in this case, jazz music. Through the eyes of his caring brother and wife, the reader witnesses the life of Sonny. In his youth, Sonny strayed from his family and became a heroin addict causing conflict between the two brothers, which is not resolved until Sonny is released from prison.
