In the article “Prestige Panic” by Robert Samuelson is about parents pushing their children to apply and attend a prestigious school. According to Samuelson, parents force their children to get good grades in high school and get a high score in their ACT or SAT. This means that if children get high scores they would be able to enter a prestigious school. A big example that shows that parents push their children is when Samuelson mentions, that parents influence a lot in the decision of students in their academic choice. This indicates that college decision is more about parents than students. Samuelson explains, that selective school have the same education as less selective schools and that it depends of the student decision, if the student

The media has come to dominate the lives of many of today’s youths. In The Great Imagination Heist, Reynolds Price expresses extreme dismay at the media’s ever-tightening grasp over the impressionable minds of adolescents. He sincerely feels that the effects of prolonged exposure to television, film, video games, and the Internet are detrimental to the development of a youth’s imagination and ability to think freely, without outside influence. The word “heist” indicates the intention to rob or steal. Price laments what he perceives to be the robbing of original, personal thought. He longs for the days when people read books freely and television was little more than a negligible aspect of our daily lives.
In Arthur Miller 's famous play The Crucible, innocent people are falsely accused of witchcraft and are killed as a result. Even the thought of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts in the late 1600s would put the whole village into mass hysteria. Mass hysteria refers to collective delusions of threats to society that spread rapidly through rumors and fear. This is the main cause of why so many people were arrested and killed for witchcraft. One way people could save themselves was by falsely confessing to have performed witchcraft. Many people did not do this though. Parents are forcing students to take classes they don’t want, leaving the student dull and unheard. Parents focus their kids to take challenging classes in order to satisfy their fear of the child getting into a good college. Students are told by parents and the school system that they must take this challenging class and extracurricular just meet ‘the standard quota” but reality it’s not true. Krugman 's even go about saying that this is why there is such a huge economic gap between social class. What this means is that if someone as a parent has gone to college they are more probable to be involved in with the education and effort that their children have. For example a college graduate parent is more probable to read to their chi9ld than a parent that only graduated from college. The impact that this has a children is that it helps them have a better understanding than other children.
Parent expectations are also a factor in educational success, which is tangentially linked to post-high school success. According to Goodman and Gregg (2010), even if parents have high expectations for their children, they are not guaranteed to succeed in higher education. Expectations are not enough to determine whether students move on to higher education. When expectations are linked to parental involvement, attainment of higher education is improved.

It can help the disadvantaged because their grades and test scores are lower because they come from a minority group where their parent’s income is low, which they chose a home in a neighborhood that they can afford.
