Chapter 4 of Practices of Looking: An Introduction to Visual Culture deals with the many different types of realism in art. The chapter also largely focuses on how time has played a key role in the way realism is viewed and how photography and perspective revolutionized the way realism is seen in art. Technological and scientific innovations have created shifts in realism: from two dimensional Egyptian hieroglyphics, to renaissance style reproduction of reality, then photography, and then towards a less realistic more objective form. Before perspective was completely understood, art was much less realistic, giving a two-dimensional, single plain like affect. However, scientists figured out ways to truly understand perspective, noticing vanishing points, and truly viewing the world in the three-dimensional way. This gave artists the ability to create highly realistic images that had a dimensional quality. Although I found perspective interesting, it is really confusing to me because I assumed perspective always existed. It seems natural to me to draw what you see, and if you see a vanishing point, you would draw it. However, before these things were truly understood, it wasn't seen widely in art. This is why there was such great shift in artistic styles throughout history; it changed from simplistic, to highly realistic. Another thing that I find interesting is how photography revolutionized the way realism was seen. Throughout history artists have strive to achieve the greatest amount of realism, until the point of photography. Once perfect reproduction was accomplished due to photography, a new era of art emerged where people would create very simple, interpretive art. The Renaissance was a time of rebirth, as its name entails. In Italy, more people were becoming literate and more books were being printed. More scientific discoveries were being made and therefore more theories were being published. In this time of intellectual prosperity, art also made a great leap. Perspective was the main change during this time period, and throughout the years, starting around 1400, it became more involved and more intricate. Eventually artists were so adept at using it, that it became the primary way to insert intimacy and feelings of emotion into a painting. This evolution of technique paved the way for later artists to play with new approaches to allow the viewer to experience an image in different ways.

The vast influence of observation was highly apparent in paintings during the Scientific Revolution particularly for artists like Jan Vermeer (Fiero, 120-121). According to, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, “Vermeer was intensely preoccupied with the behavior of light and other optical effects such as sudden recessions and changes of focus (Liedtke).” In Vermeer’s painting The Geographer, I think he pays attention very well to the light in this particular painting. It is obvious the source of the light is coming from the window next to the man in the painting. He captured the way light hits various objects in the room and the shadows they create in a very realistic manner. It is also, apparent Vermeer’s precise technical abilities and careful observation to everyday human activity that support in the realism of this particular painting. I like how he captures this individual briefly taking a moment away from his work to possibly double check something as someone would do to check their own accuracy. Jan Vermeer captured everyday life in his impressive realism paintings, which showed people a different world that existed around them. In the book “Ways of Seeing,” John Berger explains several essential aspects of art through influence of the Marxism and art history that relates to social history and the sense of sight. Berger examines the dominance of ideologies in the history of traditional art and reflects on the history, class, and ideology as a field of cultural discourse, cultural consumption and cultural practice. Berger argues, “Realism is a powerful link to ownership and money through the dominance of power.”(p.90)[1] The aesthetics of art and present historical methodology lack focus in comparison to the pictorial essay. In chapter six of the book, the pictorial imagery demonstrates a variety of art forms connoting its realism and diversity of the power of connecting to wealth in contradiction to the deprived in the western culture. The images used in this chapter relate to one another and state in the analogy the connection of realism that is depicted in social statues, landscapes, and portraiture, also present in the state of medium that was used to create this work of art.
From the creation of art to its modern understanding, artists have strived to perform and perfect a photo realistic painting with the use of complex lines, blend of colors, and captivating subjects. This is not the case anymore due to the invention of the camera in 1827, since it will always be the ultimate form of realism. Due to this, artists had the opportunities to branch away from the classical formation of realism, and venture into new forms such as what is known today as modern art. In the examination of two well known artists, Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock, we can see that the artist doesn’t only intend for the painting to be just a painting, but more of a form of telling a scene through challenging thoughts, and expressing of the artists emotion in their creation.
The movement began in literature in the mid 19th century. Realism is generally considered the beginning of modern art, it embraced the “progressive aims of modernism.” Realism portrayed how life was structured socially, economically, politically, and culturally in the mid nineteenth century. This led to art that was sometimes considered ugly do to the portrayal of life's unpleasant moments. The color scheme was usually, earthy tones that went against high art's ultimate ideals of beauty.
Romanticism was a deepened appreciation of the beauties of nature. It was a general exaltation of emotion over reason order and instinct. It was full of high passion. Romanticism was “a turning in upon the self and a heightened examination of human personality and its moods and mental potentialities”, (Pioch). The art expressed passions and inner struggles. The artists of this time were supremely individual creators. To them the creative spirit was the most important thing of their art. They didn’t follow the strict adherence to formal rules and traditional procedures. They thought of the “imagination as the gateway to the transcendent experience and spiritual truth”, (Pioch). They had obsessive interests in folk culture, the medieval era, national and ethnic culture origins. Realism was and still is an accurately reproduction of reality or heroism of modern life. Realism came as a response to Romanticism. Realism struggled against the ‘over popularity’ of Romanticism. It consisted of many pieces of still life and domestic art. Courbet, Millet, and Zola were some more of the major artists doing Realism art. They aren’t as well known as many other artists because every one was doing this kind of art and it was hard to tell the differences between the artists that painted Realism paintings. Realism “became just one more style among others”, (Brown). They anticipated many of the concerns of the eighteen hundreds or of the century before. “Realism is a recurrent theme in art which becomes a coherent movement”, (Cruttenden 50) but only after 1850.

Art has gone through many significant developments throughout history. The most important turning point was the renaissance. Art took a huge turn before the 1500’s and even after. The Renaissance has assisted the world of art in breaking away from a classic structure and shaping it to what it is day. Prior to this cultural rebirth, artworks were mostly not made to scale. Paintings were unrealistic and disproportionate. Religious figures seemed to be the focus of many works. The Renaissance changed the old social context of art by introducing humanism, new themes and techniques.
Throughout the history of , which is arguably the length of time held within the universe, not much has been distorted. Art, along with is an incredibly difficult subject to comprehend, due to the varying nature of themes, opinions, and judgments. Not to cite all the societies, time periods, ethnicities, age and gender biased opinions. It is neither a science, nor a philosophy. It is both. within itself is a beauty, which will forever perplex the minds of the world. Art, placed in the neighborhood of philosophy and science reveals its innate inclination, (although undefined) to forever intrigue and perplex both the scientific and philosophical minds.
