Chapter three from the book Mexican Migrants by Hellman focuses on the life of cooperation. Beginning with the missions and ending in the late 1800s, he employs relations of production and labor demands as a framework to explain the domination of some groups and the decay of others and concludes with the notion that ?California would have been, and would be today, a different place indeed if people had done more of their own work.?(276) While this supposition may be true, its economic determinism undermines other important factors on which he eloquently elaborates, such as religion and law. Ironically, in his description of native Californian culture, Monroy becomes victim of the same creation of the ?other? for which he chastises Spanish and Anglo cultures. His unconvincing arguments about Indian life and his reductive adherence to labor analysis ultimately detract from his work; however, he successfully provokes the reader to explore the complexities and contradictions of a particular historical era.
Carbone shows us that cooperation between Natives is essential for survival. Samuel claims, “He gives the glass beads and copper in return for the food they have brought.”(71) This shows that the colonist and natives worked together and traded for things they needed for their society. Another example, Samuel says, “This New World is a good place to live, I think as long as we live in peace the Powhatan people.”(164) This represents that the colonists need to work together or they would not survive in this New World. Cooperation with the people around us is essential to live in peace.

It is a work held to high esteem by many critics, who view this work as an essential part in truly understanding and capturing Mexico’s history. In Mexican Lives, Hellman presents us with a cast from all walks of life. This enables a reader to get more than one perspective, which tends to be bias. It also gives a more inclusive view of the nation of Mexico as a whole. Dealing with rebel activity, free trade, assassinations and their transition into the modern age, it justly captures a Mexico in its true light.

Mexico: Mexico’s immigration policy is strict with clear and distinct laws with what a foreigner can and can’t do in the country. For starters, immigrants are barred from interfering with the country’s internal political affairs. Furthermore, it is a felony to be an illegal alien in Mexico; those who come to the country under false pretenses could be deported or incarcerated. They also only accept foreigners who will be beneficial to the country’s society and economy.
They face many issues such as economic instability, depression, loneliness, fear of being alone and feeling betrayed. Children feel depressed in cases like this because even at a young age they know that things are not okay. They also suffer from fear and being betrayed, they suffer fear because they 're scared of what is going to happen to their family since they 're so used to having their family together. Many times children who face this situations feel like they’ve been betrayed because they don’t know why their mother or father have gone away and not came back. For many Mexican immigrants, crossing the border into the land of freedom and the American dream is no easy task. Some immigrants come over illegally by means of hiding in cars to cross borders, using visitor visas to stay longer, marrying to become citizens, and having babies as ‘anchors’ to grant automatic citizenship. Other immigrants gain green cards and work visas and work their way into becoming US citizens legally and subsequently gaining citizenship through paperwork for their families back home. After escaping harsh living and working conditions in Mexico, immigrants come to America prepared to gain education, opportunity, and work. This American dream unfortunately does not come to pass for most.
Life in Mexico was, before the Revolution, defined by the figure of the patron that held all of power in a certain area. Juan Preciado, who was born in an urban city outside of Comala, “came to Comala because [he] had been told that [his] father, a man named Pedro Paramo lived there” (1). He initially was unaware of the general dislike that his father was subjected to in that area of Mexico. Pedro was regarded as “[l]iving bile” (1) by the people that still inhabited Comala, a classification that Juan did not expect. People have sacrificed many things in order to improve the circumstances of their family in the future. Most parents do anything they can for their child to have a brighter future. However, immigrants are having to leave their families behind in Mexico to take the dangerous path to the United States to find work that can provide for their children back at home. It is difficult for a person to make the choice of whether or not to go to the United States for work to have better opportunities, or to stay with their families and struggle throughout their life. Illegal Mexicans should remain coming to the U.S for a better opportunities for them and their families.
With the rapid economic development, more and more people try to immigrate to America and trying to learn English. Some parents would like their children just speaking English. However, there are some parents tend to keep their native language and teach to their children, in order to keep their culture alive. And in my opinion, parents should keep their old language alive.
