Julia Alvarez’s historical fiction novel In the Time of the Butterflies tells the story of how the Mirabal sisters were in an effort to save the Dominican Republic from an evil dictator by the name of Rafael Trujillo. The Dominican Republic is an island in the Caribbean, it shares an island with Haiti. This is where Trujillo used violence to become leader of the Dominican Republic from 1930 to 1960. Through their political activism, the Mirabal sisters tried to assassinate Trujillo, and his horrible ways. Alvarez’s writing focuses on showing how people can show courage to people around them, and it also focuses on a patriarchal government. According to page 45, “I am trying to be brave but every time I think of that pretty baby.” The fact that she still thinks of her baby and reminisces about her situation shows how strong she was because even after this emotional toll of an event happened she still was brave enough to still participate in the revolution. This detail demonstrates emotional courage because with all she is going through, she still helps her community. In addition to the loss of her baby, Patria is about to lose more people. According to page 233, “Today we sing, ‘Adios con el corazón’ since this is Miriam's and Dulces' last day. Most of us are crying” The fact that Patria says this shows her awareness of the situation because she can foretell the outcome of Trujilo being dictator, the quote highlights doom to come. This detail demonstrates emotional courage because she knows she and her sister are next after what happened to Sina. In conclusion, Patria losing her baby in the novel shows how you can persevere through whatever you are going through to help other people, which can also be seen through her knowing the fate of her and her sisters is
