In the article “Free at last” by Sara Bullard the parents of black children are upset and confused why their kids get treated differently for schools. The parents of Linda Brown were confused by why there children had to go do different schools as the white children's school. Harry Briggs was mad that the white children's school got funded more than the black school. Also Ethel Belton was upset why the children had to take long bus trips to get to school so she took her complaints to the court and then the NAACP got involved. The NAACP is the National Association for the Advancement of the Colored People. It was formed in 1910 by both black and white leader. The NAACP was a legal campaign against racial injustice. After them losing their case
in the lower court, so they brought their case to the Supreme Court, and they won. They won because the Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools were inherently unequal. But then explained that even if the schools for blacks were in good condition as the school for whites there would be no true equality as long as segregation still existed. Many Southern whites were upset by this and believed that blacks did not deserve the same education as whites. They didn't want their children going attending the same schools as black children. The Southern governors stated they would abide by the court's ruling. The Southern Manifesto was issued by at southern congressmen demanding the court to reverse the Brown decision. Although the blacks lost their case even with the Supreme Court they were not discouraged because the Brown decision gave them great hope and they knew that times were changing. Even though they lost their case they never gave up and they knew times were changing.

The main character of the story is Mike, an orphan whose parents got killed in a car crash. He lives with his foster father named John Riel, who was once a police officer. During a swim meet, Mike see Mr.Henderson is staring at a girl name Emily without stopping. Then he informs Emily about what happened in the community center. However, as return Emily blackmails Mike to investigate Mr. Henderson. During the investigation, Mike finds nothing suspicious, but realize Emily is the daughter of Tricey Howard. In the Time of the Butterflies is a historical fiction novel by Julia Alvarez based on events that occurred during the rule of Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. This book shows the hardships the Mirabal Sisters had to go through while being part of an underground effort to overthrow the dictatorship of Trujillo. It also shows that ultimately, it was their courage that brought upon their own death. Alvarez wants us to understand anyone and everyone has the potential to be courageous.

I read the book Before We Were Free by Julia Alvarez. Anita, an eleven year old girl, is suddenly sent into a very scary and unknown world, right in her own home. Her cousins are running away to the United states, but to get away from what? Her parents are keeping secrets and she tries to get information from her sister, but finds out very little. Anita finds herself struggling when she is forced to grow up very quickly and try not to act as scared as she feels at times. Through the view of a young girl, this story really captures what it’s like to feel like immigration is the only option for a family.
Ida B. Wells continued the fight against mob violence and lynching to the end of her life. She showed us the way towards achieving real social justice by participating in the founding of the NAACP -- the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People -- in 1909. This alliance of whites and blacks represented a new stage in the crusade to stop racial violence and inequality. The great legal, moral, and political victories won by the NAACP and the civil rights movement stand as proof of one of Ida Wells' deepest convictions. Wells understood that justice could not be fully achieved without interracial cooperation.
This movement led to the creation of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The leaders of the NAACP often criticized Washington. Webb Dubois opposed Washington’s methods regarding black discrimination. Washington believed the only way to end racial segregation against blacks in the long run was to gain support and cooperation with Whites. Dubois wanted full equality immediately.
Toni Cade Bambara’s "The Lesson" revolves around a young black girl’s struggle to come to terms with the role that economic injustice, and the larger social injustice that it constitutes, plays in her life. Sylvia, the story’s protagonist, initially is reluctant to acknowledge that she is a victim of poverty. Far from being oblivious of the disparity between the rich and the poor, however, one might say that on some subconscious level, she is in fact aware of the inequity that permeates society and which contributes to her inexorably disadvantaged economic situation. That she relates poverty to shame—"But I feel funny, shame. But what I got to be shamed about? Got as much right to go in as anybody" (Bambara 604)—offers an indication as to why she is so hard-pressed to concede her substandard socioeconomic standing in the larger scheme of things. Sylvia is forced to finally address the true state of her place in society, however, when she observes firsthand the stark contrast between the rich and the poor at a fancy toy store in Manhattan. Initially furious about the blinding disparity, her emotionally charged reaction ultimately culminates in her acceptance of the real state of things, and this acceptance in turn cultivates her resolve to take action against the socioeconomic inequality that verily afflicts her, ensuring that "ain’t nobody gonna beat me at nuthin" (606). "The Lesson" posits that far from being insurmountable, economic and social injustice can be risen above, but it is necessary that we first acknowledge the role that it plays in our lives, and then determine to take action against it; indifference, and the inaction that it breeds, can only serve to perpetuate such injustices.

The case started in Topeka, Kansas, a black third-grader named Linda Brown had to walk one mile through a railroad switchyard to get to her black elementary school, even though a white elementary school was only seven blocks away. Linda's father, Oliver Brown, tried to enroll her in the white elementary school seven blocks from her house, but the principal of the school refused simply because the child was black. Brown went to McKinley Burnett, the head of Topeka's branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and asked for help (All Deliberate Speed pg 23). The NAACP was eager to assist the Browns, as it had long wanted to challenge segregation in public schools. The NAACP was looking for a case like this because they figured if they could just expose what had really been going on in "separate but equal society" that the circumstances really were not separate but equal, bur really much more disadvantaged to the colored people, that everything would be changed. The NAACP was hoping that if they could just prove this to society that the case would uplift most of the separate but equal facilities. The hopes of this case were for much more than just the school system, the colored people wanted to get this case to the top to abolish separate but equal.
The civil rights movement saw one of it’s earliest achievements when The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) (founded in 1909), fought to end race separation in the case of Brown Vs. The Board of Education. The court thereby rejected the “separate but equal” doctrine and overturned the case of Plessy vs. Ferguson. Public schools were finally integrated in the Fall of 1955.

Since Oliver Brown’s daughter was turned away from the all-white school four blocks from her home she had to walk a fairly far distance to catch the bus to her all black school. “Separate free schools shall be established for the education of children of African descent; and it shall be unlawful for any colored child to attend any white school, or any white child to attend a colored school”(Missouri 1929). This was no fair to her because she is being forced to go out of her way when there is a school just down the street she could go to, but she can’t because of her skin tone. This is what the start for the education system changing forever was known as Brown vs. Broad of education.
Lastly, the Civil Rights Movement was also responsible for the advancement of civil rights for African-Americans from 1880-1980 because of the Nation Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP). William Du Bois and other black activists formed the NAACP in 1909. The aims of the organisation were “to make 1,000,000 Americans physically free from peonage, mentally free from ignorance, politically free from disenfranchisement, and socially free from insult.” By 1919 the NAACP had 90,000 members in 300 branches. It also challenged white supremacy, especially the segregation laws, and made black Americans much more aware of their civil right, particularly the right to vote. Anna Quindlen is an author of children’s books and is well known for her comments on contemporary life. In her work “Doing Nothing is Something”, Quindlen makes an observation about the lack of free time that children have in their lives. She begins with a comparison to her life as a child, explaining the boredom that she used to have during the summer. However, she continues with how children now are as overscheduled as their parents, which reduces the amount of time they have for creativity. Furthermore, she explains that this is because of the parents’ expectations for what their child will do in the future and what they could do if left alone. As a final point, she illustrates her belief that children can still have free time, despite the immense number of activities that can take place. Despite Quindlen’s point, she has missed the importance of children being able to find creativity in such a busy schedule.
