Illusion can not exist independently without reality. For example, in The Barbie Movie, the barbies get to experience harsh reality outside of their illusions. Once they realized that the harsh reality outside of their own illusions was not what they thought, it upset them. Illusions give individuals a break from reality, giving them a chance of false hope and a different reality. In the short story, “Cookie Jar” by Stephen King, a young boy went to see his great-grandfather when he told him the story of his mother’s death and the roll the family cookie jar had in it. Symbolism creates a deeper meaning in a story than just using the literal meaning of the word. Symbolism is when the author uses a person, place, or thing to convey a larger idea to the reader. Calhoun writes, “Within a narrative, any person, place, or thing that stands in or represents a larger idea or concept is a symbol” (“Symbols,” Calhoun 1). When an author uses symbols, it makes the story more interesting to read and shows readers there is more than one way to express a character's feelings. “Cookie Jar” by Stephen King uses symbolism to convey important messages to readers about the character's life story. King writes, “My mother, the good which, and this fucking thing drove her mad” (King 7).
