Secondly, Understanding that suicidal does not mean unintelligent or a raving lunatic along with knowing how to approach someone who is or was suicidal can help to show suicidal people that they are not as isolated as they feel. There are many cases of suicidal where the victim was seen as normal. For example, “I was so normal that a few years later after not getting the help that I so clearly needed, most people would have never known that I was the one that it caused so much commotion late one night when I tried to jump from an overpass” (Why). Mr. Jenkins stopped his attempt when he was in line trying to get bullets and decided to get his kids toys so as to not leave them with nothing. “I'm looking through the toy aisle, and I'm looking at little toys—we couldn't afford anything, you know—so, I pick out three small toys for my kids. While I'm there it hits me, "Why am I doing this? I might not be the greatest dad in the world. I might suck in every area of fatherhood, but if I leave them like this, that’s going to ruin them. They're going to feel the ripples of this moment for generations. If I go through with this, they're destined to have their lives ruined. As bad of a father as I may think I am, they don't deserve that"(Jenkins). This marks an important moment for Mr. Jenkins as he realizes that his death is not the will of god as he had so believed before. He realized that by killing himself not only would he be hurting others close to him, he would also be hurting the people generations down from him by harming his family with his death. It is also important to note that he says he will “Ruin” them. The reader can see that he feels as though his death would not be something as simple as a “burden” it would be something that destroys his family and that is important since, when someone understands that their death is not just some simple burden they understand that their life is important and precious. If anyone can create this feeling in someone who is suicidal, they can instill a willingness to live inside them. “I asked it to myself and others with whom I’ve worked, young people today, they’ve asked it too.
