Outliers are people who are not of the ordinary and tend to be extremely successful. Malcolm Gladwell is an English-Canadian journalist who is a best selling author. Gladwell has also been a staff writer of the New Yorker since before the new millenium. In Outliers, Gladwell describes the 10,000 hour rule in which he himself has been apart of. His writing in The New Yorker and selling many books has logged in time well above 10,000 hours. Having so many hours of practice gives him a high reputation and tells the reader that his books are worth reading. The purpose of Gladwell’s book is to inform the reader. Some people may think his purpose is to teach, which is also true, but he solely supplies the reader with information and not how the reader can execute it themselves. Gladwell can give the reader information on how to be successful, but he cannot teach them how to be successful. He cannot make the reader successful because the reader has to take this information and make their own destiny. The intended audience is young people and the secondary audience is anyone who wants to be successful. Gladwell knows that everyone wants to be successful and for those who intend to reach their goals. By reading Outliers, the reader can see their dreams and goals as a reality and will strive to reach those dreams and goals. Chapter 2 of Outliers, the 10,000 hour rule, tells the stories of successful people and groups who became successful due to an abundance of practice. It is true, that in order to become a master, one must practice a lot and that even though ten thousand hours may be an exaggeration, it goes to further prove that many hours of practice is needed. After reading, the audience should feel the need to succeed and go out and try and be like the examples talked about in Outliers. When reading novels that are closely related to Outliers, the reader will now be able to look for similar themes and the reader will be able to compare the readings and discover what they do and do not like. The popular saying “practice makes perfect” has been used for many years encouraging younger generations to strive for success in whatever area they wish to excel in. Success is something everybody in society strides for but some do not know how it is achieved. However, there are many people throughout history who are known for achieving success in many areas. Malcolm Gladwell, a best selling author and speaker, identifies these people as being outliers. Gladwell identifies the word “outlier” in his story Outliers as “a scientific term to describe things or phenomena that lie outside normal experience.” Although Malcolm Gladwell does not establish credibility for himself in his novel, his targeted audience of a younger inexperienced generation feel the need to be informed by his detailed theories about becoming successful and eventually becoming an outlier. Although the reality of becoming successful can depend on instances one can not control, Gladwell tells his readers there is a great portion they can control through his theory, the 10,000 hour rule. Gladwell is able to use many studies and sources that back up his theories of how success is achieved. Although he is biased towards his theories, the only real argument that can be made in opposition to his theories would be a debate over exceptions to the 10,000 Hour Rule. Outliers ultimately has a positive effect on the audience by making them more aware of their own chances at success and how if they may be lacking in one area (education, opportunity, creativity) all hope is not lost. Gladwell’s piece is essentially timeless and will be able to be applied to future generations because he used examples from a few different eras that still make sense to today.

Gladwell demonstrates that hard work does not get people to high places but a series of opportunities and other factors will. What people have grown up to think about hard work is not true and it is demonstrated through these various examples. People will not be able to succeed, practice, and master their skills without opportunities, timing, devotion, and moral support. There is no such thing as “rags to riches” because those people would not be rich unless they had opportunities in their life. Remember that with out these key factors, people will never be able to succeed.
Outliers tends to rise above others, looking to achieve more than the average man such as you and me. These people who surpass expectations are the outliers who have a better chance of reaching greatness. Gladwell’s book is an attempt to tell the story of some of these outliers and perhaps give a formula to get to this level of success. Gladwell is a decorated writer with multiple books and much experience in his field of work. The purpose of this book is to inform the reader of the people who have reached greatness and their experiences or tricks to making it to that level. The target audience could be those who are educating themselves whether it be in class or trying to find the formula to be better. The part of the book focused on is the 10,000 hour rule which is the key to mastering a set skill. Gladwell gives big names that got to that point from their hard work and reached ten thousand hours at a faster pace than others. Gladwell’s attempt to enlighten the reader of the combination of the hard work, luck, and intelligence needed to be successful in life is conveyed with the appeal of logos presented through real life examples, patterns, and connections between characters.
