“As far back as I could remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.”- (Goodfellas) This quote is the beginning of the unbelievable but true story of Henry Hill, told through the mob classic Goodfellas. Henry Hill was born to a poor family in New York, where he had always looked up to the local gangsters, capo Paul Cicero and Jimmy Conway. As he grew into his teenage years he looked to work for their business and was hired. He started off doing simple things like running errands, as well as collecting and dropping off money. Shortly after, he was advancing into things like the illegal sale of cigarettes with Tommy DeVito. During the sale of some cigarettes he was he was arrested, while Tommy was able to flee the scene successfully. This was …show more content…
the first and biggest challenge that he had encountered, in which he learned the most important lessons of his life. After successfully beating the charge against him, Jimmy takes him aside and gives him some money and tells him that he is proud of him. Confused, Henry thinks he would be mad at him for getting caught. Jimmy tells him that everyone gets caught sometimes, but that he did it the right way by not saying anything. He then tells Henry the two most important things in life, “Never rat on your friends and always keep your mouth shut.” (Goodfellas) From then on, Henry was “one of them”. He began to get into more serious crimes such as the hijacking of trucks with Jimmy. Eventually, it realistically wasn’t hijacking, they had drivers that they would pay to tell them when the big shipments would come in and would let them take what they wanted. Jimmy was dubbed “The Gent” due to his gentleman like demeanor during the hijackings. During a welcome home party for Billy Batts, he insults Tommy by treating him like he was the child from back in the day and tells him to, “Go home and get your shine box” (Goodfellas). Tommy does not take kindly to that and at the end of the party decides to beat him to death in the bar they were at. The only problem with this is that Billy was a “made man”, which made him untouchable and became a big problem when he was not ever heard from again. Jimmy and Henry helped Tommy to hide the body. Months after, the spot where they buried the body was becoming used, so they were forced to go back and remove the previously buried remains and move them again. Henry and Jimmy are now order to go down to Florida to collect the debt from a gambler, which takes some convincing physically and ends up coming back to haunt them. The man they beat up had a family member that worked as a typist for the F.B.I., for their actions they both received ten years in prison. Henry then starts to sell drugs from inside prison to make more money for his family.
He is strongly advised by Paul to stay away from any kind of narcotics, in which Henry tells him that he wouldn’t dream of doing that. Henry continues to used his connections that he made in prison to sell drugs while out of jail. Next comes the most historic score in their careers, The Lufthansa Heist. A robbery that took place at John F. Kennedy Airport, where the total return was in excess of six million dollars. After the heist Jimmy specifically told everyone not to go out and buy anything that might attract unusual attention Multiple people went directly against what Jimmy said and went out and bought multiple expensive things. Another problem arises, when the driver of the van that was used to transport the stolen money, was suppose to be taken to a junkyard and instead the driver went to his girlfriend’s house and celebrated with her. The van was found by the police and was staring to connect the dots. As you could imagine, this upset Jimmy, and he takes extreme caution as the police are starting to close in. Jimmy made the only decision he could make to cut all ties from these people, so he has some of the people that were involved killed as a way to protect himself, by not giving them an option of testifying against him. During this time Tommy is told he is going to be “made”, or become a “made man”. As he walks into the room where he is supposed to be made, he is shot in the head …show more content…
multiple times as retribution for what he had done to Billy Batts. Henry is now frequently using cocaine as well as distributing it and it finally catches up to him as he is arrested trying to get more drugs from Pittsburgh. He is arrested and sure that Jimmy is trying to kill him and decides to betray everything he has ever known and enters the Witness Protection Program. He then flips and gives the government everything he knows which leads to a multitude of arrests and the end of what he knows of life. He ends the movie by saying “I’m an average nobody. I get to live the rest of my life schnook.” (Goodfellas) For multiple reasons that real names of these people weren’t used in the movie, but for this part of the paper I will be using their real names as they were used when they appeared in court. Jimmy Conway is actually James Burke, Paul Cicero’s name is Paul Vario, and Tommy DeVito is Tommy DeSimone. (dailymail.co.uk) James Burke, was convicted of fixing college basketball games as part of an illegal gambling scandal, and was sentenced to twenty years in prison. He was later convicted of the murder of an associate because testimony of Henry Hill. He would later die of lung cancer in prison at the age of 64. Though never being convicted, it has been said that James Burke was one of the people that were behind the Lufthansa Heist, which is the most historical robberies on American soil, amounting to around six million dollars’ worth of goods stolen from John F. Kennedy International Airport. It was said, he was advised about a large shipment of untraceable money that was coming in through the airport, due to a worker at the airport that had amassed quite a bit of a gambling debt, in exchange for his balance to be cleared. Paul Vario, was convicted of contempt and conspiracy to commit perjury and was sentenced to three years in prison. He was also convicted on counts of racketeering, extortion, illegal gambling, and loansharking. While in prison they were said to have lived like kings, drinking wine and the ability to cook their own food. Paul died in prison at the age of seventy-three on charges that have been acquired through the testimony of Henry Hill. During the 1970’s the government created the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act or RICO Act. RICO can carry criminal and civil penalties, for the criminal RICO there are three requirements. The crimes have to be done within a business enterprise, there has to be a pattern of racketeering, and there has to be two predicate activates within a ten-year period. Richard Nixon was the one that signed the RICO Act into the law. Witness Protection, along with the RICO Act, was created in 1970 to protect witnesses in the trials to take down organized crime.
It is when the government protects someone that they value as a witness as well as having their lives be threatened or in danger due to their testimony. Some witnesses are only protected until the end of the trial they are testifying in, or they may have a completely new identity and live the rest of their lives under government protection. Witnesses and their families typically get new identities with authentic documentation. Housing, subsistence for basic living expenses and medical care are provided to the witnesses. The U.S. Marshals are the service that actually protects the people that are entered into the program.
(usmarshals.gov) Extortion is the act of obtaining something through either force or a threat, and it is considered to be a felony. In this case, the extorting was due to being paid “protection money”, which is payments to these figures for the protection of their businesses. Racketeering is either when an organization runs rackets, which are illegal businesses like the sale of narcotics and weapons, or a legitimate business that is used to embezzle money. Loansharking is another example of a racket, which is when somebody is loaned money, that typically comes with a high interest rate and a guarantee that if you do not pay back the money that you owe there will be consequences and repercussions. Illegal gambling was another common practice, high stakes card games, roulette, craps and sports betting were commonly played. Sports betting playing a major role in the loansharking business, they would loan money out to people who would bet the money they just borrowed, which they either won the money and were able to pay back their debts, or they would lose and owe them more money. Another common crime was tax fraud, which is when someone intentionally doesn’t pay the government the taxes that are owed to them. (criminal.findlaw.com) This was so common because most of these people were “ghosts” anyway, having little to no legal information about them at all. Henry says, the only things that he had to let you know that he was alive was his birth certificate and his arrest record.
Let me tell you about the “Gabardine Gang”. My father was the leader of an organized crime gang in the city of Hartford Connecticut. Far enough away from New York, New Jersey and Boston crime circuits. Yet, we lived close enough to know what the big guys were doing.. These small gangsters are nothing like you would see on TV or in the movies. My father ran his operation that worked in gambling, burglary, prostitution and bribery. You will never see films or books on these types of gangsters. They are not the glamorous expensive suit wearing types. They don't live in mansions, have maids or servants. These are the ‘blue’ collar types, or as I call them the 'lower-level' gangster. While you may not hear much about these types of gangsters,
I can still remember the day, June 2, 2013, my cousin took his own life due to alcohol. This is not the first time alcoholism has taken a family member from my family. I lost my uncle ten years ago to the same things, but running his truck into a tree. Like Scott Russell Sanders’ my family has suffered from the pain and disease that alcohol causes. Although Sanders’ case was much different than mine, my families is more unknown until all of a sudden one of my family members is gone. In Sanders’ essay, “Under the Influence: Paying the Price of my Father’s Booze,” he discusses how it was growing up around him, his father’s life being taken, and his life now.
Al Capone’s family came with a wave of other Italian immigrants that migrated to the United States in the 1800’s. Most immigrants in that time were living in poverty and in very urban areas. Capone’s family lived in the heart of Brooklyn, but his father was a successful barber which allowed them a slightly better lifestyle than most. Al Capone was the fourth of nine children and grew up with a very tight-knit Italian family who were trying to succeed in their new country”. Capone attended public school in the city and had a natural brightness by keeping a “B average” despite playing hooky on many occasions. The sixth grade showcased Capone’s short temper when he hit a female teacher who was lecturing him. This incident reveals the beginning of who Al Capone would come to be. After being suspended for his violence, he never officially furthered his education. He began his life of crime by joining the kid gangs that existed all over Brooklyn. These “gangs” were nothing more than children being hoodlums and participating in petty crimes, although they would be the ...
“My crimey here think the way to go is more drugs. But I know better. I think making money is okay, but not making it just by dealing. You gotta go legit, at least for a minute. You gotta go state fresh, all the way live, if you wanna do anything worthwhile out here. Everybody thinks they can make crazy dollars, but they confused. It aint like that. I’ve seen co-caine bust many a head – they get fucked up and be clocking out after they find out they cannot find the key to understanding that mystery skied. But you know what? But-but0but you know what? They don’t have a clue. Word.” (Williams, 1989)
Sense and Nonsense about Crime and Drugs by Samuel Walker Samuel Walker, author of Sense and Nonsense about Crime and Drugs, presented us in his book with forty-eight propositions that dealt with crime, drugs, and our efforts toward getting rid of these problems. A few of these propositions informed us on positive actions taking place in our criminal justice system, but the majority of them told us what was not working to fight crime and drugs. One of those propositions that was a negative aspect of our justice system today in Mr. Walker's eyes was the "three strikes and you're out" laws (referred to here after as three strikes laws). He gives numerous reasons why this law is not considered to be an effective one. This paper will first explain Walker's view on the issue and then review some of the current research and opinions on the matter.
Frank Lucas (born September 9, 1930[4] in La Grange, North Carolina and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina[5]) is a former heroin dealer, and organized crime boss in Harlem during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was particularly known for cutting out middlemen in the drug trade and buying heroin directly from his source in the Golden Triangle. Frank Lucas is popularly known for smuggling heroin using the coffins of dead American servicemen,[6] a claim his South Asian associate, Leslie "Ike" Atkinson denies. [7] He is the subject of the 2007 film American Gangster.
Stress, there is no way to avoid stress being alive. For some reason, people try to avoid, or run away from their problems by doing all kinds of drugs, such as nicotine, marijuana, ecstasy, and much more. These drugs relaxes people, relieving stress for a period of time. Of course, doing drugs is not good for your health, and we can not really prevent people from doing drugs, and getting an addiction in the first place. What people with drug addictions need to do is find any source of help as soon as possible, relieve their stress, or just find a medication. If nothing is treated to the addiction, then the addiction will just grow worse. Drug addictions can only prevent people from accomplishing goals or dreams in life. People sometimes feel
The film “Goodfellas,” directed by Martin Scorsese, is loosely based on the true story of mobster Henry Hill’s career with the mafia. The main characters in this movie are Henry Hill, played by Ray Liota, who was part of the mafia, James Conway who was a stickup/hit man, played by Robert De Niro, and Tommy DeVito, played by Joe Pesci, who was another gangster. At the beginning of the film a young Hill is seen admiring the gangsters who spend time across the street at one of their establishments. Hill can be heard talking about how much he admired gangsters, and that all he ever wanted to be was a gangster. Throughout the movie the audience gets a sense of what life as a gangster in the criminal underworld might have been like.
Al Capone, America’s most prominent Mafia figure in the 1920’s, also known as “Scarface” for a scar running down his left cheek. Capone didn’t hide in the shadows like most figures in such a shady occupation. He didn’t shy away from the camera, more like he welcomed it, and aimed to be seen by the public as a respectable businessman and a pillar of the community. Surprisingly, Capone wasn’t from a distinctly poor community, his father earned a living as a barber. Capone was introduced to the gang life by a friend and from there it all went downhill and into the life of a gangster.
Another common theme of this wildly intoxicated era was that of the gangsters. In the twenty-first century when the word gangster is uttered, often times images of minorities in baggy clothes comes to mind. However, when discussing the Prohibition Era the lives of gangsters are seen as much more glamorous, and none were more glamorous than that of the ultimate American gangster, Al “Scarface” Capone. Capone’s name brings to mind images of pinstripe suits, underground bars, bootleggers, flappers, and gun fights. His image embodies that of the Prohibition Era and his influence throughout society carries through it. Alphonse Capone is the ultimate American gangster.
Al Capone was born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 17,1899. He was the fourth of seven sons and two daughters. His parents, Gabriel and Theresa, were one of thousands of Italians who arrived in New York in 1894 for a better living. The early Capone was slashed with a knife across his left cheek by a young hoodlum in a restaurant , For harassing a woman, prompting the later nickname ‘’Scarface.’’Then Capone met a gangster named Johnny Torrio, who taught Capone how to build a corporate empire. Torrio moved from New York to Chicago in 1909 to help run a giant brothel business. In 1919 Capone joined Torrio’s James Street Boys gang in Chicago, Where he had become an Influential Lieutenant in the Colosimo mob. In 1925, Al Capone became boss when Torrio was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt, surrendered control and retired to Brooklyn. As Prohibition began, New bootlegging operations opened up and drew in immense wealth. Capone started running gambling, prostitution, and gunning down rival gangs. Capone kidnapped opponents, election workers and threatened voters with violence. Later he eventually won office in Cairo but then his brother frank had been killed in a shootout with the Police of Chicago. Capone left for Miami with his wife and children and bought Palm Island estate,...
It was the late 19th century when a lot of conflict for families from the Industrial Revolution and illegal drugs had easy access to anyone in the United Sates. These illegal drugs like morphine, cocaine, and alcohol were available through manufacture, delivery, and selling. It was proved that the over use of alcohol and violence in families’ homes were linked together around the 1850’s and that women and children were being abused by the father and husband from the letters and journals that were wrote. These were times when women were stay at home mothers and it was the man’s responsibility to be the provider for the wife and children. Because of the abuse in the household it led up to the temperance movement. The purpose
now the story behind him. What made him to be the most feared gangster in the city of Chicago? How did this kid from a rough neighborhood and no money grow up to have $60,000,000? I’ve always been fascinated with organized crime but had never been taught anything in school about it. This report gave me the chance to explore something interesting and also educational. The more I researched Al Capone, the more I wanted to learn about him. He may look like an innocent Italian at a glance, but he has done a lot of crime in the city of Chicago.
Al Capone was the son of two poor Italian immigrants, he had to find guidance with the only people that took an interest in him but unfortunately for him it was some of the biggest mob leaders in New York. Even with that kind of influence hard to believe that a once soft spoken, intelligent kid from a good family would grow up to run a major city with blood, bullets, and
Greetings to whomever takes the time to read this letter. To my knowledge, Alcoholics Anonymous exist to help those that cannot seem to help themselves; a safe haven created for those in need of one. The question is, what are alcoholics in search of ? Purpose is what they are in search of, sometimes a sense of purpose is very hard to attain. Although, it is possible for an alcoholic to find meaning in their lives. The novel, A Tale of Two Cities, written by Charles Dickens, includes a character by the name of Sydney Carton. Sydney Carton for a portion of the book, is indeed an alcoholic. Roughly halfway through the book, Carton is able to escape the sinister grip of alcoholism. Carton mustered the power to do this by establishing his purpose,
