Because of the progress in the developments of social media and technology, communication, news dissemination, social weather surveys and many others have also been improved. Social media has helped communicating with people much easier. Through social media sites, we could easily get in touch with friends and family members no matter the distance. It also makes it easy for people to get updated with recent happenings. Because of these benefits social media has to offer, more users engage in using these social media sites. Although it makes communication easier, it does have its negative effects to its users. This study aims to know the students’ perspective on social media and its impact to the development of their social relationships
For a long time since the dawn of Social media, there have been series of developments for the enhancement of communication, news dissemination, social weather surveys and many others. Social media refers to interaction among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks (Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia). The assistance and convenience that Social media is offering to communities or larger groups of people have found its way to popularity. Virtual communities are social aggregations that emerge from the Net when enough people carry on those public discussions long enough, with sufficient human feeling to form webs of personal relationships (Rheingold, 1993).
Social media together with the technological developments of the twentieth century have transformed social relationships, which once were cultivated and maintained in face-to-face contact but often are now mediated electronically (Gergen, 2008). Through the technologies of the century, the number and variety of relationships in which we are engaged are steadily increasing (Erman, William, Shauf, 1997). Communication and social relationships have been affected because of Social media and technological developments.
There are some negative effects of Social media to the development of social relationships just as there are beneficial effects. It is evident how we substitute social networking activities for traditional social behaviors and that our real-life social networks are shrinking and becoming less diverse as we cluster into and communicate with groups of trusted, like-minded others (Dellner, 2011). From this point of view, rather than singing the praises of online community, we should be worried that this alternative to an increasingly difficult real world will have deleterious consequences on morality and ethics off-line (Robins, 1995).
Because people, through the use of Social media, are building communities, they become less and less involved in personal interactions.
Does communication via social media have a negative impact on the importance of face-to-face interactions? In Jenna Wortham's article, I Had a Nice Time with You Tonight, on the App, this is the central issue. It is easy for a person coming from a simpler generation to agree with this particular statement. On the contrary, if a person coming from this technologically advanced generation were to be asked this question, the individual may have a completely different opinion. Wortham, a credible writer for the New York Times, appeals to the younger and more technologically sound generation. She gathers information from educators and from her own experiences and drafts a thesis. Although there might be some downside to the bulk usage of social media as a means of communication, there is tremendous upside that facilitates the usage of such means.
In “I’m So Totally, Digitally, Close to You: The Brave New World of Digital Intimacy,” an article first appeared in Wired and New York Times Magazine in 2008, Clive Thompson, a Canadian journalist, writer, and blogger, writes about the connection between society and the impact of social media. He points out the main topics, first explaining about the users’ attraction of Facebook and other forms of “incessant online contact” (585), then the benefits and disadvantages of social networking sites, and the rise of online awareness. Undoubtedly, social media has definitely expanded our social circle allowing for more relationships and making our close ones stronger. In addition, it has also rapidly changed our traditional understanding of relationships
Some say that social media allows them to stay in contact. They proclaim that meeting new people from all over the world is exciting. In his essay “Social Connections”, Steven Johnson describes how technology is separating society. He also describes how the ones closest to us feel distant (423). The main problem is everyone using social media sites are not who they claim to be on-line.
Social media is part of the social evolution of the XXI century. Use through mobile devices have enabled the proliferation of ways unimagined by those who even developed. Today, in fact, thanks to social media is easier to express everything that happens then, inevitably, have become an additional mechanism of social coexistence that not only facilitates interpersonal relationships but that comes at promoting and although undoubtedly judgment his detractors have also depersonalized who occupy them as a means of social bonding.
Compared with the past centuries, there are several types of communication technologies which could be used when communicating with others in the contemporary society. Information flow can be shown in different patterns in the twenty-first century, for example, spoken, written and keyed forms (Brody, 1990). It would be apparent that digital citizens have changed their communication style gradually due to the rapid development of media technologies. According to Dimmich et al. (2011:1266), access to different media technologies stimulates the fluency of interpersonal communication such as telephone, email, instant message (IM) and social networks, thus, users could contact with others without the obstruction of distance and time. Digital media have varied human’s original social connection, whether it ruins the quality of personal relationships or explores more communication channels (Byam, 2010). It might be true that the amount of the modern media technologies users has increased dramatically and those technologies would play important roles for most people in their daily life and change not only human’s communication pattern but also impact on the quality of interpersonal relationship.
...: Exploring Issues and Ideas. Laurie G. Kirszner and Stephen R. Mandell. 8th ed. Upper Saddle River: Pearson, 2014. Print. Sherry Turkle is a professor at MIT, the founder and director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self, and a radio and television media commentator. She argues that social networking negatively affects our interpersonal relationships. She mentions that youth are increasingly sending text messages or Facebook comments to one another rather than talking face-to-face or talking over the phone. Turkle describes how we may be “connected” online, but are really growing further apart because of the barriers in communication that social media creates. She includes a few personal stories to support her argument of the detrimental effects technology can have on relationships. This essay helped me to present the “con” side of the social network debate.
Social networking can connect strangers across the world. As the evolution of communication continues, technology progresses and social networking grows. Social networks like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook have grown to have billions of users. In fact, in today’s society, it is necessary or nearly expected to use one, if not all, of these technological communication networks. The increasing use of social networking has had both a negative and positive effect on communication in relationships.
Social media is used by many people, young and old around the world as a way to communicate. Our lives have become so busy that it is difficult to maintain family and social relationships. “They use social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. On these sites users create profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research and share thoughts, photos, music, links and more” (Social Networking). With the use of social media you can be friends with all sorts of people without actually seeing or knowing them. “In many ways, social communities are the virtual equivalent of meeting at the general store or at church socials to exchange news and get updated on friends and families” (Cosmato).
Social networking has now introduced an innovative way of attaining these norms through virtual communities on the Web. Socialization prepares us for our life experiences. It can be considered a reverential foundation for society. We may not agree to some rules in society, but without socialization a civil society would cease to exist. In addition, any influence on the socialization process has a profound effect on how we function as a community, with some of the more notable discovery’s being email and instant messaging.
Communication plays an important role and becomes an essential part in our daily lives. Today we have taken communication to new level as social media and social networking. They have had a tremendous impacts on the word, on our culture and in business as well. Social media websites are some of the most popular on the internet, such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. They are the places where people can interact with others easily and expose themselves to strangers. Our generation and the younger ones have more opportunities to grow up with the new development of technology that will shape the way they live of communicating and sharing ideas. The social media causes some problems that lead to less social interaction and negatively affect students academic, but it also brings benefit to people that creates new social connections to bring people from all over the world to be closer.
Social Media has become a very essential tool in the society; in addition, it has a huge impact on communication and learning process. Social media is defined as websites and applications used for social networking. “As of September 2013, seventy-one percent of online adult use Facebook, eighteen percent use Twitter and seventeen percent use Instagram, twenty-two percent use PInterest, and another twenty-two percent use LinkedIn. (PewReasearch, 2013). In addition, "Between February 2005 and August 2006, the use of social networking sites among young adult internet user ages eighteen and twenty-nine jumped from nine percent to forty-nine percent. The usage of social media had grown drastically.” On social media sites like these, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more” (Socialnetworking.procon,2012). Social media has impacted everyone in several different ways. In this present time, majority of college student use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Social media has a bold impact college student's grades, social interactions, and the teaching and learning process.
The negative effects associated with using social media will continue well into the future if we go on at the current pace. Only when individuals become more mindful of what they post and how much time they spend each day on social media sites can these negative effects be changed. Although social media does serve a purpose in our society, there is no substitute for real life relationships. One must always remember physical contact can never occur in a virtual relationship on Facebook or
The most important advantage of the use of social media is the online distribution and sharing of knowledge and ideas among the different groups of people. This online sharing of this data also promotes the increase and improvement in the communication skills among the people. The online tools and technology has not only mediated communication in countless ways, but also the ways people communicate and even the ways they talk and think about the communication are changing as a result. Also, social media has the potential to change the character of our social lives, both on an interpersonal and also at a community
One of the main reasons why social media has positively affected our society is because of how it has made communicating with people much easier. “Today, four out of five active internet users maintain at least one social media profile” (Moe, 3). Using these websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and etc., people talk about everything with anyone from what they are planning to do, also what they are eating and much more (Moe, 24). Also we can also send private messages to other users of these websites about personal m...
The social media is one of the most common means of communication and pretty much of knowing anything and everything around the world these days, and it is growing very rapidly. It changes and affects each person in a different way, or ways. Some may argue that social media has a bad influence on children and young adults, while most people see that the social media has a more positive effect on them than a negative one. Social media is basically the new way of keeping in touch with everything and everyone, and of even strengthening bonds between each other. This essay will argue that social media has improved communication between people, and has also improved the means of communication between them.
