#2 I give back to my community and neighborhood through volunteering at UCSF, The san Francisco Zoo, and at my Martial Arts Dojo coaching younger students. #3 I face adversity head on. This means understanding any deficiency I may have and taking methodical steps to strengthen my weaknesses and improve my performance. As an example, If I struggle with a subject matter, I do not hesitate to reach out to fellow students or faculty for guidance and support. #4 I hold high standards for myself and do not allow circumstances beyond my control to serve as a impediment to my goals. If I face problems weather personal or academic, I remain optimistic and focus on the brighter side of the situation rather than dwell on things i may not be able to change. #7 Regardless of the college I attend I plan to fully participate in not only my academic program but also as a participant in various school governing activities such as a student representative or other member of the student government council in addition, I expect to actively participate in college activities and social events which will help me gain a well rounded college experience. #8 …show more content…
The best demonstration of this has been through my active participation as a member of the student council where I provided representation of both the academic and social concerns raised by the student body. I have taken this experience as a way to encourage student participation while remaining an advocate for both students and the governing council. I am also a participant in an internship program through ALHS where I am leveraging what I learned in my biotechnology classes with real life research and analysis through an outside research company (Rare Genomics). This internship involves assisting researcher with documentation of individuals with rare
Adversities are often given a negative connotation and view, as most consider them to be hurdles which impede progress. Nevertheless when taken in and accepted under a positive light, adversities can serve as stepping stones through which an individual can better their character. In the face of looming obstacles individuals who persevere come out of the situation as stronger, determined, and more hopeful for the future.
I help out my family and community in several ways. I have volunteered to help coach cheerleading at Jefferson Elementary School everyday after school. I work at Mattoon Academy of Gymnastics and coach several classes and their gymnastics team. I also work in my church's nursery on Sundays. Being a role model for all of the kids I coach and take care of means a lot to me because they look up to me and want to follow in my footsteps. Despite my busy schedule, I try to help out in the community and with my family as much as
Adversity can be defined as a state or instance of serious or continued difficulty or misfortune. Many things in life can bring one adversity, however some are faced with more adversity in their lives than others. Overcoming this adversity can be one of the most difficult things that a person encounters, and at times, it may consume them. People attempt to persevere through adversity in many different ways. One of the most effective ways is to keep pushing through and to never give up. If one loses sight of what is driving them to persevere through adversity, it will swallow them up with no remorse. Staying mentally tough and focused on an end goal is how people not only persevere, but thrive through adversity.
In what ways has adversity touched your life and shaped your view of the future? How do you anticipate “paying it forward” as you pursue your higher education and beyond?
The importance of college student life and involvement as it pertains to student success and retention in college
In my years of experience with the Orange County Debate League, I have acquired priceless skills and experiences, whether it be debating or facilitating tournament operations. Back in the 7th grade, I expressed interest in joining the debate team at Fairmont North Tustin. Midway through the year, I volunteered to take pictures at the tournaments because I noticed that the league kept referencing to pictures and a photographer, but nobody actually took pictures. In my 8th grade year, I signed up to train to become a tournament administrator, but I quickly shifted gears and realized that the position was not for me when another opportunity came by, which was switching the tournament
I have also volunteer at Walnut Park Middle School for three years, and I tutor students who needs my help in the subject they are struggling on. I’m also in an organization/volunteer work which is call Community for Better Environment and we sue big factories/companies that harm our communities and we stop big project like the expansion of the 710 freeway which the governing border wanted to expand our freeway into eight lanes. Expanding the freeway right next to our city will increase air pollution, asthma, breathing problems and heart
I always devote myself to helping others as much as I can. I suppose I attribute being a part of such a tight-knit family as my own to play a significant role in my desire to help others in their times of need, as my family has always done for each other. Thus, I make it a point to constantly volunteer in my school and community. By doing so, over my four years of high school I have accumulated over 400 service learning hours. I am an active participant in various community service-oriented extracurricular activities and organizations. I am a member of many such clubs like National Honors Society, Beta Club, Key Club, Human Relations Club, Student Leadership, and HOPE Club. Of those, I am president of National Honors Society, treasurer of
Social influence/peer groups were one of the dominant themes in my observations, survey, and literature. Social influence looks at how individual thoughts, actions and feelings are influenced by social groups (Aronson, 2010).The desire to be accepted and liked by others can lead to dangerous behavior. College life can be an overwhelming experience for first time college students and or transfer students as they struggle to manage class time and social activities in an attempt to fit-in in the new environment that they may not be used to. Students can experience too much anxiety and drop out of college or fall behind classes. Working at the Cambell Student Union information Center, I observed a great deal of students falling into this trap of social influence and peer pressure. A female student tripped as she was going up the stairs to Spot Coffee but did not fall. What appears to be a group of guys who are not popular (guys who are not very well known), were seating where popular students normally seat. The group of guys started laughing at the girl and stopped. One guy kept laughing, but it was obvious he was forcing the laughter as to purposely attract attention. He started making jokes about the girl and carrying on the laughter so he would appear to be funny. Another example, which portrays peer influence, involves parties over the weekend. Multiple students stated they were falling behind in classes on the grounds of their friends wanted to go out the night before and they did not want to seem/appear “lame” so they tagged along. The influence of a group is intensified by the person’s desire to be an accepted member of the peer group. To achieve this desire he tries to conform in everyday to the patterns approved by the grou...
My first desire to contribute started in fourth grade. I helped beautify an Oakland neighborhood park, so underserved children could have a nice place to play. Since then, I have continued to participate in various park cleanups in order to create a better environment for children.
I can also make a difference in the community where I live. Last year my class held a car wash to raise money for the Animal Shelter. We went to visit the dogs there and I realized that the money we raised made a difference for some of them.
I credit my current and future success to an issue I faced as a kid. When I was younger, I had a hearing issue that caused me to fall behind academically, this required me to work in order to catch up, spending my summer vacation working through education programs to get back on the proper academic track. While things have never been easy, I feel that experience helped to develop the work ethic and determination that I have currently. I am a person that needs to work harder than the rest in order to succeed academically, which allowed me to get accepted and thrive at UConn, a Top 20 rated University in the country. My goal is to work as hard as I can so at the end of the day I can look back and have no regrets that I could have done more. I feel it’s this approach that will allow me to succeed in my professional endeavors.
Many institutions made civic learning a high priority in the undergraduate education goals and start to begin systematic assessment of the influence of their educational opportunities. There are also significant of scholarship using student surveys on college campuses, evidence on how campuses have an influence at various stages of a students’ career.
Adversity is an experience of facing major obstacles that have an impact on someone's life. Adversity usually seen as a negative while it is happening but could be seen as a positive later on, even as a learning experience. Going through adversity has helped me explore my faith and strengthen it. Facing these obstacles every single day has been rough on me both mentally and spiritually because I know it is impossible to overcome. One thing that drives me crazy is that my adversity does not only affect myself, but it also weaves its way into the lives of my friends and family, even people I am just passing on the sidewalk.
This year, I had the opportunity to give back to the community in many ways. I volunteered at Helping Hands, Meals on Wheels, and the county Science Museum. These volunteering experiences further opened my eyes to the needs of my community and the many opportunities to serve by volunteering.
