Student Learning Contract

An important part of the student’s placement was to establish a learning contract with myself as her clinical mentor. The learning contract is a document used to assist in the planning of the student learning needs. It is written as an agreement which is negotiated between the student and myself as her the mentor. In order to do this successfully we needed to identify the student learning objectives which included the learning outcomes of the modules to be assessed in practice. As this was the student first year attempt to set a learning contract it was important for me to support her through the process. The student stated she felt intimidated by the term learning contract mainly because of its legal connotation. Rather than concentrating her efforts on ‘learning ‘the placed far too much emphasis on ‘contract’, which made the whole process unnecessarily daunting. I was able to calmly and reassuringly discuss the discuss the process with the student and we shared ideas. This help the student to work through her concerns and take responsibility for her own learning. When the initial learning contract was written learning about and understanding medications was not an identified need. However, after participating in the drug we identified it as a learning need and created an action plan. This was effective as the student by the end of the placement had achieved all her learning. She used the learning contract and my informal and formal feedback from other members of the team to achieve the step identified in the action. I believe that the relationship between the learner and I at the start of our mentoring helped us to facilitated a mutual respect and fondness for one another that proved to be very conductive and beneficial to our mentoring process. Her feedback appears to show the same sentiments as she described the entire process to be both informative and helpful, to her development as a nurse.
