If student-athletes should be paid to play does that mean high school and pee-wee athletes should be cashing in on checks too? No, but because of the maturity level difference and circumstances of the situation there has been a debate for years on whether or not college athletes should be paid. Paying these athletes would get them not only ready for professional careers, but also provides a needed income for them on little or not on a scholarship. It would help eliminate from cheating, and or “throwing a game,” for payment. Money is made off of merchandise and ticket sales because fans want to see these athletes perform; so why not pay them what they’re earning? Yes they help the school bring in money from games and merchandise, but they key word in this sentence is school. If the school was to pay these athletes it would be from their own funds which are meant for the whole school entirely including’s such as: other students, faculty, bills, and more. Paying with school funds would actually lead to a decrease in some school enrollments/graduates. Lower end schools would struggle because they wouldn’t be financially stable to pay their athletes enough to keep them from transferring to a bigger school. Some schools depend on the money they get from sporting events to help pay for the facility, but if they weren’t able to pay their athletes and keep them attending that school they could lose their sports programs entirely. No sports no money. Some athletes get scholarships, so if they were to be paid to play it almost is as if they are stealing from other students. Some scholarships give students free books, free food, free dorms, basically a free education. Paying these athletes would take away from other students who aren’t on scholarships, the money that is supposed to go and help their education would be taken away because they’re not an athlete. College athletes tend to be looked more upon around campus than your average student, paying them would just make it even more
