IQ test stands for an ‘intelligence quotient’ test, or a cognitive ability test and these tests are taken frequently by many people as a measure of one’s intelligence. The view that an IQ test accurately determines, or even estimate, and individual’s intelligence is very arguable, and has not been without controversy. IQ tests work on the notion of Symbolic Logic, and since this is not correlated with intelligence, there is uncertainty over what is being measured. The very notion of intelligence can be debated on vigorously, due to the vast possible definitions of the essence of intelligence. Te means by which an IQ test is developed can also greatly influence the outcome , as the test depends on what the test maker considers as intelligent. Symbolic, or mathematical, logic is a smaller field in mathematics, relating closely to philosophical logic and computer science. 1 In relation to IQ tests, they measure fluid reasoning, quantitative reasoning, visual-spatial processing and working memory. 2 However, IQ tests do not measure creativity, which is a huge factor in an individual’s intelligence. They also do not measure practical intelligence, which is the concept of individuals using their knowledge to make best use of themselves with the demands of the environment. Lastly, it doest not measure emotional intelligence, which is described as the ability to assess and control one’s emotions, as well of other people. Thus if looked at overall, IQ tests do not test an individual’s varying different forms of skills and intelligence. A 2006 paper stated that mainstream contemporary test analysis does not reflect substantial recent developments in the field and “bears an uncanny resemblance to the psychometric state of the art as it existed in the 1950s.” 6 Harvard professor Stephen Jay Gould criticized IQ tests, saying that intelligence tests were based on faulty assumptions. 7 Though IQ tests can be successfully used to predict future scores in a similar field, as demonstrated by the study done by the American Psychological Association, 7 in conclusion intelligence is a very broad topic, and its definition needs to be as such. Many different kinds of intelligences may exist within every individual. A test limited to testing only one area of and individual’s capabilities is limited and cannot be used to judge a person’s true intelligence.
Before answering the questions let find out what intelligence test is. It is a test consisting of a series of tasks requiring people to use various verbal and non verbal skills to measure the individual’s intellectual ability. Now that we know what an intelligence test is we can now answer the question better. Three important short comings of intelligence test that have nothing to do with intelligence are: having low motivation or high anxiety which can greatly influence the performance on the test, also IQ test may contain cultural biases in their language and or tasks that may place people of one background above people of another back ground, and members of minority groups may have little experience with this kind of test or may be uncomfortable with examiners of a different ethnic back ground than them (Comer, 2013, pp.107).

General intelligence tends to relate to various degrees with each other (Cohen 2012). An example of this is that if an individual is good in math, they may also be good in spelling. Surprisingly, intelligence is not defined as a single ability, but by a combination of related abilities. For instance, a savant that discerns numbers different than the average human, and uses those numbers to connect with others is an unconventional show of intelligence. I do not think this on-line IQ test is a good predictor of a person’s future achievements. The true nature of intelligence has been debated more intensely then ever over the last century. As the science of psychology has developed one of the biggest questions it had to answer concerned the nature of Intelligence. Some of the definitions that have been given for intelligence have been the ability to adjust to one’s environment. Of course by such a definition even a person who is generally considered to be dull can be regarded as being intelligent if he can take care of himself. In a 1921 symposium entitled “Intelligence and Its Measurement”, psychiatrists were asked to define intelligence and their answers varied greatly. One described intelligence as “equivalent to the capacity to learn.” Other definitions included “the ability to adapt adequately to relatively new situations”, “the capacity to learn or profit from experience”, and “the knowledge that an individual possesses.” And one stated that there was no simple definition to the word because “intelligence involves two factors- the capacity for knowledge and knowledge possessed” (Sternberg & Detterman, 1986, p.39-40).
Intelligence by definition is “the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills” (Oxford Dictionary, 2014). However, many psychologists argue that there is no standard definition of ‘intelligence’, and there have been many different theories over time as psychologists try to find better ways to define this concept (Boundless 2013). While some believe in a single, general intelligence, others believe that intelligence involves multiple abilities and skills. Another largely debated concept is whether intelligence is genetically determined and fixed, or whether is it open to change, through learning and environmental influence. This is commonly known as the nature vs. nurture debate.
Gardner’s theory of MI offers an alternative view of intelligence which has measured intelligence based on the results that would predict success in the current educational system. Furham (2009) sums up Gardner’s definition as “the ability to solve problems or to create products that are valued within one or more cultural settings”. This definition suggests that human intelligence is comprised of more than the predictable success in a western school system. Gardner argues that traditional definitions of intelligence and intelligence testing are too narrow and marginalize people who do not fit traditional education system that focuses on visual–spatial, verbal–linguistic, and logical–mathematical intelligences. He supports this with unique cases of idiots savant, who are people with low IQs but excel in skills in areas not measured through tradition IQ tests (Arnett, 2013). According to the Webster Dictionary, intelligence is defined as a person who has the ability to not only acquire but, to also apply the knowledge and skills they have to everyday life. Graded exam do not test our intelligence however, it tests our ability to memorize and shows our work ethics and determination.
