How are the themes of freedom and oppression presented in, ‘The Story of an Hour’ and ‘Still I Rise?’ In this essay, I will be looking at the themes of freedom and oppression in, ‘The Story of an hour’ by Kate Chopin and, ‘Still I Rise’ by Maya Angelou through different devices, language and techniques. ‘The Story of an Hour’ centers around a married woman called Louise Mallard who we are told has a heart condition. However, when news of a tragic accident involving her husband is broken to her, whilst on the surface she appears to act with ‘normal’ emotions of grief, “Wild abandonment, in her sisters arms.” there is an immediate acceptance that doesn’t normally happen. One of the most obvious cases of this is when Mrs. Mallard comprehends that her husband has just passed away and goes into her room with no one to follow her. Chopin uses the physical description of the armchair with adjectives “comfortable” and “roomy” to show that at a time when one might expect her to feel instability and apprehension, her realization of freedom has brought her a sense of calm and ease at discovering her new self. Mallard gains her own independence after her husbands proclaimed death. The story refers to the protagonist as Mrs. Mallard. However, after, ‘Mrs. Mallard’ has acknowledged that her husbands death has brought her freedom, she is then referred to by her first name, Louise. ‘Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door—you will make yourself ill.’ Cleverly, Angelou portrays a similar idea by repetitively exaggerating how she possesses objects and attitudes. ‘Weakened by my soulful cries? Does my haughtiness offend you… Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines. Diggin’ in my own backyard…Does my sexiness offend you…I dance like I’ve got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs.’ Despite Angelou’s use of similes, it is obvious that she takes advantage of the words my/mine.
