First, a little information about both. The Story of an Hour was written by Kate Chopin in the year 1894. The story follows a woman, called Louise, who has heart trouble. She is told that her husband was killed in an accident. The Interlopers is about two men that are trapped under a large tree. These men’s families have been fighting for generations. The men, called Georg and Ulrich start out saying that the other will be killed of his men come first. These two stories might sound like they don’t have anything in common. If you read them a little more thoroughly, you will find they do have some reoccurring theme. For example, in both of these stories the main character (or characters) end up dying by the end of the story. In The Interlopers the two men draw the attention of nearby wolves. “‘No.’ said Ulrich with a laugh, the idiotic chattering laugh of a man unstrung with a hideous fear…’Wolves’” (Saki 9). The story ends with them realizing their mistake. In The Story of an Hour, the story ends with the woman dying of a heart attack after …show more content…
seeing her husband whom she presumed dead. As you can see, both of these stories end with a very dark twist. Another similarity is that they both end ironically.
The Story of an Hour is all about how the woman slowly realizes that she is free from the shackles of having a husband and how she is happy that she is now free because of that fact. Then, at the end of the story, she dies of shock and merriment because her husband, after all, is alive. This is a very obvious example of irony, however in the Interlopers, it is a little less apparent when you first read the story. The irony in this story is an example of what is called cosmic irony. Cosmic irony is associated with some sort of misfortune that is unexpected. At the end of the Interlopers, Georg and Ulrich call out to some figures they can see in the distance, and realize they are wolves only after they have drawn attention to themselves. Finally, after working through a couple of the similarities in these stories, we will look at some of the
differences. One of the ways these stories differ is in the general idea of the story. In the Interlopers, the basic idea is that two people come to terms with being together. These two families have been fighting for generations. The experience of being at death’s door with each other made them realize that the endless fighting was stupid and pointless. Life is short. They decide to become friends and go into town together when they are rescued. They also both decide that the other shall be helped first when their men do come. In the Story of an Hour, one person is coming to terms with being apart from her other half. She initially reacts as you might expect her to, “She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms.” (Chopin 10). She then proceeded to lock herself in a room to be alone with her thoughts. During the time spent in solitary confinement one word kept circling in her mind; free. That one word had so much power. She no longer had a husband to hold her down. She could go and do whatever she wanted! She didn’t have to look pretty or make meals, she was free from the burden of having a man to look after! It was a wonderful feeling. Then…you know how it ends. Still, she had come to terms with being alone in the world before suddenly dying.
The short stories "The Interlopers" and "The Story of an Hour" are both great stories. The Interlopers stars Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym along with their decades-long family grudge. The Story of an Hour includes Mrs. Louise Mallard and the unfortunate death of her husband. To compare and contrast these stories, we need to know where their plots overlap and where they are set apart.
An element of literature in The Interlopers is situational irony. Irony is the contrast between an actual outcome and what the reader or the characters expect. Irony is important to this story because a major family conflict would have ended, but an event occurred and changed that. Irony is in the interlopers when the wolves came and ate the men. When Georg says, “I will be your friend” it was major irony (Saki 309). The whole story the reader thought that the two men would surely kill each other when they met, but they made up. Also, when Ulrich said “Wolves” there is a turning point fueled by Irony (Saki 310).
“The Story of an Hour” was set in the era when women were expected to just be caretakers and nothing else while the story “Girl” is set in a more modern era when women were allowed to take on jobs outside of the home. Yet the expectations of women stay the same. The stories are set in different generations. It is stated that Mrs. Mallard is relatively young but she is still married and is in a different part of her lifecycle than the girl. The girl is an adolescent, not yet an adult yet she is facing the same crisis that an adult woman would face. The stories also differ in the culture and social backgrounds of the characters. Based on Chopin’s background, her characters are more or likely Creole, white, living in the south and relatively well-off. The mother and daughter in “Girl” are from a Caribbean island, black and not very wealthy. However they are both still exposed to societal roles for women. During the hundred years that separate the stories much has changed for women in the fact that they have the freedom to vote, to get an education and to work yet both Mrs. Mallard and the daughter in “Girl” seem desperate for the same freedom; the freedom to be who they want to be without society dictating
In "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," Ambrose Bierce recreates a few brief seconds of time for a man being executed whose cognition of these seconds is perceived as the better part of a full day. "All that day he traveled…" (paragraph 33). "In "The Story of an Hour," Kate Chopin relates a meaningful, yet unusual hour of time as the last one lived for a woman who has been given the news of her husband's death in a "railroad disaster" (paragraph 2). "She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance. She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment…" (paragraph 3). Both stories are centered on the powerful emotions that occur within the minds of the characters as they live out the last moments of their lives. The narrators reveal the most intimate thoughts of each character.
It is important to note how each individual story is similar and different, because it allows us to understand how the emotions in the book affect us. ‘The Interlopers’ and ‘Story of an Hour’ are two of my favorite short stories. They are both very different, and have their own unique style. They are, also, somewhat similar. This is because the authors of the book are both similar and different, both in their backgrounds and personalities. In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting both short stories from my own point of view.
Both stories transpire in a brief period of time. The events in the ‘Story of an Hour” develop in just one hour from beginning to end. Mrs. Mal...
“The Interlopers by Saki” and “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin are two short and stories that are unique in their own ways. Each utilizes certain elements to keep the reader intrigued to the end. However, though they might be similar in that way, they are still quite different from each other.
As the title puts it, “The Story of an Hour” takes place in the span of an hour. The title of the story also shows the possibility of occurrences within a single hour. This story is mostly centered around one woman, Louis Mallard. In conventional circumstances, death brings sorrow, grief, seclusion, guilt, regrets, along with other feeling depending on the cause of death. In “The Story of an Hour”, sorrow and grief are a product of the recent happenings, however, these feelings are coupled with joy and independence. Kate Chopin uses this story to convey death as a joyful circumstance whereas conventionally it is portrayed as sorrowful.
The two stories may have very different plots, but they share quite a few ideas. The stories share faint foreshadowing at the beginning. In the interlopers, the author mentions a strong storm brewing as the men wander the land. In the story of an hour, the author mentions how Louis has a heart disease.
“The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “The Interlopers” by Saki both have a comparable conflict and use similar literary elements such as foreshadowing and irony, however, each author uses these components in different ways to portray separate themes.
“The Story of an Hour” was a story set in a time dominated by men. During this time women were dependent on men, but they always dreamed of freedom. Most people still think that men should be dominant and in control. They think that without men, women can’t do anything and that they can’t be happy. Well this story has a twist.
To begin with, The Story of An Hour and The Interlopers have complete different topics and main ideas. Of course, the two stories are not going to have the same plot or main idea. The Story of An Hour is about a wife who has a joyful feeling after she is told her husband has passed away, even
Since Kate Chopin has used different types of literary devices, it is good to know the definition to those word to better understand “The Story of An Hour”. This story uses a lot of irony throughout the whole passage as well as imagery and symbolism. Each literary device has been set within its own meaning in the story. Using these literary devices that Kate Chopin used, it was what helped make the story into a great one. it makes it be more descriptive in the way the reader views things while reading it.
“The Story of an Hour” is the story revolving around a young woman, Louise Mallard, who has a heart problem, and she receives news of her husband’s death by the train accident. Her sister, Josephine, told her about the news. At first, she is upset, her body cold, and her mind and heart were empty. But as she grieves, she realizes she is free to live a life that she dreams of living instead of that which her husband would have had her live. Unfortunately, at the end, she discovers that her husband is not dead, and dies of a possible heart attack.
A story must have a strong plot in order to make it interesting to the readers. The plot is chain of events that make up a story. It draws a reader into the story, causing them to get hooked. Readers will recognize that the five elements of plot are essential to a good story. The elements that make up the plot are exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
